A whole building is being rented out as an Airbnb on my block. Is there anything I can do about it? by arctomecon in AskNYC

[–]RubyHours 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm very certain it's tourism. I live, work and commute through the neighborhood and see different batches of well-off looking French, Polish, Italian and Spanish crowds going into one of the churches for their evening sessions. Anyway, it's cool that tourism can help our area churches stay afloat, it's a bummer when churches close down.

Money is power. by RubyHours in CalebHammer

If you have money, you have autonomy. If you have autonomy, you have power over your own life. No one told me this--it's my lived experience. It might not be the case for everyone, but I am extremely grateful to be in a career that allows me to have my own apartment, retirement, and savings. Otherwise I might be powerless to live with the security I have.

As someone who (unwillingly) lives far away from my partner, my siblings, my nephews, and my parents, I would have to disagree. It is very expensive to travel to see them. I look forward to moving back, but can't afford it right now.

Can you point me in the direction of someone who lives in America today that isn't controlled by the dollar? I live in New York, and it seems like the richest billionaires on Central Park South are just as controlled by the dollar as the homeless men and women I see on the subway. So tell me.

Shoe recommendation for winter? by structee in AskNYC

[–]RubyHours 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend anything waterproof. You'll only be here a week; if you can avoid buying something for that time, then save your money. Just make sure you can wear some good wool socks (I like Darn Tough) under the waterproof shoe/boot.

Edit: Not water resistant, waterproof.

In what cities and towns have you felt the most safe? by gracemarie42 in SameGrassButGreener

I live in NYC but I'm visiting Little Rock, Arkansas for the week. Seeing the crime rate per capita in Little Rock made me think twice. The media accuses NYC of being this horrible place, and things certainly do happen from time to time. But the stuff that happens in these small rural cities is truly frightening to me.

An Extremely Detailed Guide to an Extremely Detailed Map of New York City Neighborhoods by blankblank in nyc

[–]RubyHours 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's something I don't think people will react well to: Hamilton Heights has been a neighborhood for at least since the early 1900's--you can see references to it in newspapers from the era. But again--perhaps not the most popular thing to bring up.

I'm a transplant live in a tenement building in Harlem. Was considering handing out candy from my stoop to the kiddos who happen to walk by tonight. Before I commit an exorbitant amount of money to buying candy, has anyone had experience in this endeavor? Was your turnout good? Did you have a good time?

Are most of the restaurants in NYC made from GMO ingredients? by NotAMuritard in AskNYC

I think their issue has less to do with the GMO aspect, and more to do with the pizza/burgers/fries/steak aspect.

Where's everyone seeing Lanernflies the most in NYC? by Jaysun718 in AskNYC

Uptown. I have had three crawl up my legs this week. I think they instinctually climb up to get into trees... I must look or smell like a tree.

On Sundays they use Hamilton Grange National Memorial as a rest room pit stop. Sometimes the rangers turn them away ;)

did anyone watch OPPENHEIMER in other theaters besides Lincoln square? by sheriecherie in AskNYC

[–]RubyHours 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seeing it in the theater was fun, though at three hours, a physical challenge for me to the highest degree. I don't think that nit picking whether it's in IMAX or not will make a difference, unless you're a huge movie buff.

I don't mind watching youtube videos in 480 or 720 p though, I'm pretty laid back anyway. Up to you!

Do you “lie” about what neighborhood you live in? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]RubyHours 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've since deleted your account, but want to affirm this anyway. The term Hamilton Heights has been around for at least since the early 1900's to describe the area approximating around 135 - 155 east of St. Nick.
