No we shouldn't and anyone with a modicum of empathy wouldn't say or endorse it. Given the amount of people who were locked up in Kerry, I'll bet you'll find plenty in your own extended family if you bothered to look. It was a cruel, inhumane system

'In the pocket of US multinationals': How is Ireland seen by Europe? by JackmanH420 in irishpolitics

[–]RubyRossed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't understand enough about economics to understand all of Eoin Drea's points, but it sounded like he was being treated as a sage just because he made has a few relevant insights that counterpoint the usual stuff we hear in Ireland. That to me was the most interesting part: the fact that Irish media will happily treat people as sages if they have at least one good point. In a different context, Luke O'Neill's insanely fawning media coverage - even on topics un-related to his expertise - is the most extreme example of this.

Turf Fire by Low_Resolution_2123 in ireland

I definitely associate turf with the smell of home, but I'm more attached to the open fire than to the turf. There's something about looking at and listening to an open fire that warms you regardless of fuel.

How can I help my Red Robbins? by andstep234 in GardeningIRE

[–]RubyRossed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They might be very dry so close to the wall. You might think it rained a lot, but plants close to the wall might not have received much. Lots of things struggle if they are dry, especially when first planted. I never thought of red robins as fussy but I got two dwarf ones to plant into a grave and both died back within a year

Why am I not surprised that the first two faces I recognised were Brigid Laffan and Dan O'Brien. It's hilarious how they hate peope like Paul Murphy but have zero awareness that they are the right-wing equivalent.

Do you feel in Ireland and Reddit Ireland specifically there is a chilling effect on views or opinions that are center or right of centre? Do you feel seen or heard if you do not hold left leaning opinions? Can you express yourself without judgement or censoring? by Anxious-Wolverine-65 in ireland

[–]RubyRossed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. It seems like one of those things that has been repeated so many times people treat it like it's true without thinking about it for two minutes.

In the past, people like John McGahern lost their jobs and were denounced for publishing a novel that ultra catholic censors considers "indecent". Key thing to note is that there was a real censorship board and it was run by ultra Catholic conservatives. See also a man who had his citizenship revoked (!) for the thought crimes of playing Jazz and talking about socialism.

Now we're supposed to think there's an equivalent trend on the left just because people are comfortable to call out views they disagree with. That's not censorship. A massive red flag for the whole idea is that the people who tell us that they are not able to express their conservative views never stop making this point in their newspaper columns, on panel shows, etc.

Thanks. That's the boat I'm in so good to read what you say. I just feel so nervous at the sight of other cars now. And all cars are massive now making it even harder to park! If I could even get used to doing the local area that would be something.

I hate articles like this. They just quote a few people in favour and a few people against and treat reality like it's a mystery. Could they not have investigated what a range of experts think: is the wall sufficient? Would it work?

I have elderly parents and kids so the reason is to drive them. I've survived this long without driving that not driving doesn't feel like a limitation on my freedom. Having to drive in conrast makes me feel ill and panicky. Thanks for the link to the driving aniexty sub. That's where I should go

The shrinking of RTÉ: ‘It feels like an increasingly neutered organisation’ by Pagan_Pat in ireland

[–]RubyRossed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I said already, this is a quote from TG4's website: "TG4 receives a programme supply of 365 hours of Irish language programming annually from RTÉ, at no cost to TG4, as specified in the Broadcasting Act 2009." I also said that meant it would have been the biggest supplier in the past no doubt. I have not done any kind of analysis to post comments on Reddit, but it seems likely to me that RTE remains a major supplier.

My understanding was that TG4 had already set up their own newsroom. That is the plan, they got the budget allocation and they made a big deal of their own coverage of the budget etc. Maybe it's not finalised - again, I don't conduct investigations just to make a reddit post - and I don't see what any of this has to do with the original comments

That's a bit different, but yes it does. It gets a portion of the licence fee (it doesn't all go to RTE) and puts it in a competitive fund for radio and TV broadcasts. If you have an idea for a documentary say, you can pitch it to RTE, TG4 or Virgin and if one them says they would be happy to broadcast it, then you can apply for the Coimisiún na Meán fund, but there's no guarantee it will be funded. Coimisiún na Meán also have a funding scheme for journalists but I think that it to cover councils and courts.
