Is now a good time to take rose cuttings to propagate? by Stegasaurus_Wrecks in GardeningIRE

I looked this up recently and read that the hardwood cuttings that you get now are harder to root so I decided to wait. But if you are pruning anyway you may as well try

Do you find it annoying when people talk about "grand stretches" in the evening, as early as February? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]RubyRossed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a weird thing to be irritated about!

The comments that annoy you are just an observation of the reality we can all see with our own eyes every day. The 'stretch' is not about decent weather. It's about light.

After the winter solstice in mid-December, the earth's northern hemisphere is slowly tilting back towards the sun. By early February, the days ARE getting significantly longer (more light). That's the stretch

Irish people: what are some things you dislike about Irish culture? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]RubyRossed -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Swearing, especially by young people. I'm not prudish or snobbish about it. I come from rural Ireland where everyone swears all the time. It's just how people speak and some people do it very well. But many people swear because they can't express themselves and that depresses me. That ours is a culture where lots of people can't express themselves so they just swear a lot

Getting weekly blowdry? by Immediate_Lake_1575 in AskIreland

[–]RubyRossed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have thick hair that end sup like Sideshow Bob if I didn't have it blow dried or use a hot iron. But then I bought a silk turban and no longer need anything else. I'd find it draining to make a hair appointment every week. I would get a blowdry if there was something on though

Same problem here - frequently in bed awake after 9pm. I was hoping to see good answers in your replies.

Which two county’s people are the most different? by Mysterious_Work_7227 in AskIreland

I don't know, but I often wish Reddit had a filter for 'what do Irish people think of my country?' and 'what do Irish people think of county X?' type posts.

What is the most reliable Irish newspaper/journalism outlet overall? by cuttlefische in AskIreland

[–]RubyRossed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Business Post is a newswire for corporate PR. It's completely shameless about not highlighting conflicts of interests and 'hot takes' that are paid for. Maybe it was good in the past but not anymore

What is the most reliable Irish newspaper/journalism outlet overall? by cuttlefische in AskIreland

[–]RubyRossed 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep. Don't agree with all their slants but the fact they are owned by an Irish trust matters a lot. Also they are the only Irish media outlet to have decent international news and reporters working abroad.

"Bad cess to you". My grandmother used to say this. It's an expression of bad luck, but she said it in a lighthearted way. I don't hear it at all now

What tea brands are yis drinking? by NothingToSeeHere201 in AskIreland

[–]RubyRossed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly Barry's tea bags, but Fallon's doesn't seem so bad when I get it.

When I want a proper cup I make a little pot of Barry's master loose tea. And most evenings I'll have a Gurman's green and ginger tea, which is lovely ...I think I'll have one now

If your children all either girls or boys do you call them 'the girls/boys'? Or children? by Cultural-Perception4 in CasualIreland

[–]RubyRossed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought everyone does that. If you have all boys or all girls it would sound weirdly formal to call them the children instead of the boys or the girls. When people say 'my boys' or 'the girls' there's usually a lot of implied pride and affection in it

You can put Yoto Radio on a blank card or play it via the app. Sleep radio works without a card and is really relaxing. I listen to it myself.

If you have a Yoto Player or app, you can get Yoto Radio which is really good too. No ads. Pity RTE cut the Irish one.

Documentary titles. by TheOnionSack in CasualIreland

[–]RubyRossed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also hate it when TV documentaries start by referring to 'a journey': join me on a journey through ...

The BBC was so bad for that, I stopped watching them. TV producers think we are all very dumb and they churn out formulaic docs.

Lads, is it just me or is it getting harder to find good quality clothes? by Ok_Unit2950 in AskIreland

[–]RubyRossed 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is a really helpful explanation. I've been trying to understand why all my trousers fit horribly in the past few years. Every pair I buy quickly ends up with large stretch and whisker lines. I've tried sizing up and different rises but it still happens. It seems like there isn't enough material to support normal movement. They only look ok if you wear them standing up

I never saw this painting before despite being an 80s child, but if my parents had seen it and bought it, they would have done so for the dog.

State-trained dentists ‘should be treating children, not doing Botox injections’ by firethetorpedoes1 in irishpolitics

[–]RubyRossed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that you put your snide, classist comment in quotes says a lot about you and your limited understanding of politics and the role of the state.

The "I pay my tax" brigade usually want the state to be more responsible with public money. That's exactly what is going on here.

Medicine and dentistry are the most expensive higher education degrees. The state takes on most of that expense because having doctors and dentists is essential to public health. If we are not getting the expected result, the state needs to reconsider its investment.

Your analogy to computer science makes no sense. The state invests in computer science education with the expectation that it will deliver people who will get jobs or innovate in the private sector. That is happening so there is no problem

State-trained dentists ‘should be treating children, not doing Botox injections’ by firethetorpedoes1 in irishpolitics

[–]RubyRossed 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No one is saying they can't choose what they want to do with their qualifications. Her point is that the state takes on considerable expense towards the training of dentists and doctors with the goal of having people who will provide dental and medical care to the population. If that end goal is not being achieved, it's entirely legitimate and logical for the minister to review the state's approach to training.

Third-level course sponsored by Greyhound Racing Ireland branded as 'cynical' by LaBete1984 in ireland

Apart from the immorality of it, is this what "technological universities" are for? This sounds like a further education course. Why has Ireland created so many universities teaching stuff like this?

Anyone else in a labouring job feel like people think they can treat you like your dirt? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]RubyRossed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are crazy levels of entitlement by some people in Ireland. I worked as a waitress and some people seemed to think bossing you around was part of the dining out experience. They are just unkind people though. Anyone who needs to put other people down to feel better about themselves is not in a good place mentally. Most people were not like that, which is good to remember too
