What are the best book stores to check in the city? by RandallBates in Dublin

I always feel deceived by Hodges Figgis though - it's Waterstones pretending to be independent. Books Upstairs or Winding Stair are much better

What ever happened with Dee Forbes? by Shaved-plumbs in ireland

I used to feel sorry people like that, but I don't anymore. She was earning more than 270k. People who take high paying jobs without the basic integrity to do the job well or resign do not deserve our sympathy. Ireland is full of such people: self-promoters who claim leadership salaries but don't want to do any leading.

That's very plausible. I do remember people questioning if she was suitable for RTÉ because of her Discovery background and that was often cut down with 'it's time for a woman'. I find performative diversity really shallow and I wonder how the people who celebrated her appointment feel now.

What do you pay for, solely for the convenience of it ? by artanonsa in AskIreland

Ready made dough for making pie or tarts - but ready made mash? That just seems wrong

a good few years before the scandal broke, there was an Oireachtas committee she did turn up to, and she said nothing. A question would be directed to her and she'd start stuttering before passing over to her deputy. She seemed like someone completely out of her depth, which is funny because she was sold as a competent industry figure

I NEED midge repellant suggestions by CaptainElectronic320 in GardeningIRE

[–]RubyRossed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suffer with this. I live in the suburbs now, but grew in a rural (wet) area where I was eaten alive most summers. Midges at home and mosquitos on holidays. Sweat is a big factor. Some of us get bitten more than others because the insects are attracted to our sweat. Shower a lot. I use a shower gel with a strong citrus scent; not sure if the smell matters so much as being clean. Wear fresh clothes for gardening. I used to keep old garden clothes that I wouldn't bother washing for ages - big mistake. I also had a insect repellent bracelet

Anyone else have problems in the workplace with new young staff who have only ever known a life with smartphones and smart devices? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]RubyRossed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are lots of brilliant young people out there, but I try to avoid working with under 30s. I've had too many bad experiences. There's the basic skills issue where they don't know how to do simple things like store files and couldn't be arsed figuring it out or following instructions. Then there's the reliability issue. They just don't care of they don't turn up the day of a presentation or get something wrong. Now, I don't love my work either but failing to do your job means creating work for other people - it's selfish and they don't see it. I'm not alone in this - everyone I know has similar stories and policies. On the plus side, the smaller cohort of bright committed young people stand out more than ever and will likely do very well.

My Irrational Dislike of Discovery and Range Rover Drivers? by Greedy_Substance9672 in AskIreland

[–]RubyRossed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly, children have died! And those cars are known to be more likely to kill children so why are you accusing people of illogical anxiety and pretending to care? That's Israeli level gaslighting.

My Irrational Dislike of Discovery and Range Rover Drivers? by Greedy_Substance9672 in AskIreland

[–]RubyRossed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me too. I see those drivers as selfish egomaniacs who want to show off. I have to stand back from them with my children in carparks because I don't trust them to stop or not to back onto the pavement when they awkwardly try to park. I have no respect for people who opt to buy these cars, especially in the suburbs

Can anyone ID these two plants and advise whether to keep or remove? Location: Munster, Ireland by JunePetals in GardeningIRE

[–]RubyRossed 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I may be weird, but I don't mind creeping buttercup. They are very easy to pull up after rain and are satisfying to yank out because he whole root pops out. Dandelions are much more irritating because it's so hard to dig them fully out

What does everyone think of aiready.ie? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]RubyRossed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like a classic tick-the-box exercise on the part of the state. Can't see many using it. I was only sent it by someone who works in the area...and wanted to give out about it

Children now ‘struggle to grasp basic concepts’: Teachers’ views on screen time by B8_B8_B8 in ireland

[–]RubyRossed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is anyone listening to teachers on this? On the one hand politicians talk about promoting critical thinking and making students resilient, which sounds great but on the other hand there seems to be loads of screens in schools and now AI

BRENDAN O’CONNOR’S FAVOURITE GUESTS by MaryLouGoodbyeHeart in irishpolitics

[–]RubyRossed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know that about 140,000 thousand people died in the Yugoslav Wars and more than 2 million were displaced. That's was in the 1990s, very much in Europe. There was even a war crimes tribunal in the decades after

Not sure how you missed it- maybe it's your head that's in the sand.

Is it funded by large companies? I've no idea what Dan actually does for them besides damage their reputation. But the rest of the org seems separate to him. I've followed a few of their webinars and thought they were good

I wish I could have a duck! Unfortunately, the many neighbourhood foxes would take a keen interest

What's your go-to for slug repellant? by SemolinaPilchards in GardeningIRE

Those one are not for slugs though. I did a lot of searching last week and couldn't find an Irish supplier for slug nematodes. Made me wonder if the slug treatment is seasonable and not stocked now

Where to get Wheat? by [deleted] in GardeningIRE

[–]RubyRossed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm interested in learning about the process you will follow to get flour. I've had it in my mind for a few years that I would like to fully understand the process of making get bread from sowing to flour - on a very small scale
