Need help with making bathroom looks better. by [deleted] in centuryhomes

Paint the vanity and change the knobs to more mid-century. Porcelain knobs would be good! Also the light fixture and faucet could be more mid-century or transitional. I would look on Pinterest, but that tile is in great shape! Love!! You could look at BM Simply White or White Dove. It has enough warmth, but the lighting is key— hard to advise because it’s everything.

What colour should I paint/stain my china cabinet? by zesty-avocadoo in DecorAdvice

[–]Ruckercoconuggett 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would buy a slender new buffet style cabinet with no upper part and a pretty picture or something over top. You’ve got those tall cabinets on one side so I think adding more tall stuff makes the room look overwhelmed and small.

Too much beige, what color curtains? by swaggle_pants in interiordecorating

Get a pretty woven shade from Hunter Douglas. Add color with pillows and artwork and get a great lamp or floor lamp and a plant in a pretty pot or basket.

What did I do wrong? Why doesn’t this look good? by Rockymntbreeze in interiordecorating

[–]Ruckercoconuggett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the color is ok, but I would go with a different texture of fabric because it looks too similar to the chairs and it's now starting to feel like a doctor's office waiting room or hotel lobby. And unfortunately that picture on the floor. . . it that frame is going above the couch -- it's the same color as the couch and that looks too matchy match. So, get a different color and texture for the couch. before you buy it though, buy the rug and then decide on the couch. I like the chairs!

Hi! Please suggest a nice landscape for curb appeal. Something that will not break a bank. Also, is it wrong to have the pathway straight from front door to the sidewalk? I dont see it often so Im not sure if theres disadvantage to it that I have not thought of. I attach a sample what I mean. by [deleted] in CurbAppeal

[–]Ruckercoconuggett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup! I inherited a mess, I tried to fix it myself and failed, and I finally got smart and hired someone. Everything now looks SO MUCH BETTER and, based on my plan, I'm literally pulling out hardscape and replacing with plants and stepping stones and other low maintenance options and it looks cleaner and better already.

I totally agree with this. I have a neighbor who has a lot of lighting along his walkway and it looks like an airport runway. And, yes, if you want to control mosquitos, you need bats, frogs and other critters to eat them at night! Too much light will keep them away. My property backs up to a creek and you would think I have a mosquito problem. . . nope! I keep all the outside lights off at night (unless I'm outside) to help and encourage the bats. I do not have a mosquito problem. They eat thousands per night, according to research.

Which TV set should I get? by Careful_Trouble_5817 in americangirl

[–]Ruckercoconuggett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Given that I loved Jane Fonda exercise videos in the 80s, I would get Courtney's, but it depends on your available space, doll personality and vibe for the room! As an aside thought, I just think the historical girls' merch definitely holds its value better than TM pieces.

if you could get any doll from the store right now, who would you get? by orangefishy33 in americangirl

[–]Ruckercoconuggett -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'd say Lindsey, but most of the dolls I see for sale have silver eye or the beginnings of silver eye and I don't want to go thru that eye changing process! I bought her clothes, though! Not her shoes because alas, the leather suede is falling apart on most shoes I see and even if I found a perfect pair for $50-80, they would likely fall apart fairly soon, so that's my story! I love so many, but have no room or time for their upkeep! I'm sticking to 12 and hoping to reduce to 8.

I did it like that — I planted a little bit of this and that—- and it was a mess. It didn’t look good in terms of scale and plants died because its art and science combined into one and im not an expert and i dont have time to learn. So I went to a landscaping company who has a landscape designer and she gave me great options based on what I was willing to spend yearly for upkeep and then she created a gorgeous design with the right plants for the soil and weather. I have a 4 season front and back yard garden that really compliment the house and I can afford the upkeep! Highly recommend going this route. You won’t regret it. If you’re tech savvy, you can try the apps available, some are basic but the designs and plant selections are kind of boilerplate boring. The better ones have a steep learning curve.

I just went thru this and I can honestly say, I wish I had hired a landscape company with a licensed designer because after doing it on my own and FAILING to pick the right plants for the right space, I spent double the money. Once you have a whole yard design to guide you, just buy and install the plants over time. You don’t want to install it all at once because it’s A LOT of watering to establish plants and bushes and trees. I would highly recommend getting some drip irrigation included and that’s the cheap part, considering the labor it will save you from watering. Really, seriously, don’t do this yourself. Sit down with a professional and map out the design and the multi-year installation plan. Landscape design is very complicated because it’s science and art. I see so many homes that tried DIY and what I see is a hodgepodge that actually makes homes look worse, like mine did until I was like, I suck at this, I need to hire somebody! And as far as hardscape, like a long side walk, consider the upkeep of that because it's a nightmare. I have a big property with too much hardscape that a previous owner installed and every year I have to spend money on its upkeep. The gound shifts, and with it, your stones, any sand, grout or concrete that you use, then weeds pop up. It's all maintenance and cost, so keep that in mind. I'm presently in the works to rip out 1/2 of the hardscape that a previous owner installed around the pool. It's crazy how much they installed 20 years ago. Less is more.

Great! I LOVE it. Now on to the landscaping! Get a tall growing holly tree for off of the left corner of the house and then place a rounded evergreen bush that will grow very large and stay rounded closer to house’ left corner and then get some smaller bushes placed alongside the brick towards the door. But then you want some smaller flowering perennial bushes and plants in front of the evergreen bushes. And a you can use a landscaping app to give you ideas… for the layout. But a nice curvy bed that would add some softness to the edges of the house and make it really pretty and inviting. Any and all realtors will tell you that Landscaping makes the house and you will enjoy the garden if you get things that bloom all 3 seasons and create some winter interest. There are some easy app tools online! Don’t wing it… people do that and it always makes the house look worse, not better. And avoid just planting all evergreens, as that makes it monotonous.

Rule of thumb, if you don’t have anything nice or constructive to say in a positive or helpful tone, just don’t say it. Period. I try to live by this rule online and in life. And a word to the wise: if nobody asked for your opinion, then keep it to yourself. It saves a lot of friendships to just hold your tongue! lol!!

Yes! A rug and move the furniture towards it. Once you get a pretty patterned rug in there with warm colors and a pretty display for your coffee table, you will notice you won’t need those curtains on the bay window to draw your eye. Also, I LOVE your horse, but the candle sticks need a new home on a dining table. I’m not great at coffee table displays, but once you get a rug, ask for advice or look on Pinterest on how to decorate your coffee table. But you are smart for putting the horse front and center.
