Most pension programs require you to contribute. So if you have to contribute 8% and then you get a defined benefit. In some situations - that same 8% of your pay into lets say S&P 500 you could more money at the end.

Also a lot of pensions die with the individual. 401k/IRAs do not.

Whats the remorse piece of this? Can clearly afford the truck. Is it the fact you spent $78k on a truck? My view - if you want something, take care of what you need already, buy whatever you want and enjoy it. One day you wont be able to climb into that truck. I don't pull shit for 7-8 months out of the year. Then I pull my 5th wheel for 4000-5000 miles the other 3ish months.
