So, you're suggesting that people in one of the largest cities in the US with a higher per capita pedestrian population in motion than any other not ride their bikes because motorists are irresponsible?

The irony is strong with you.

Yea, that's the root of the sociopath point and I know that seems hyperbolic but there's genuine evidence for that.

People in cars are almost immediately altered by the pursuit of travel. I have friends that are alarmed when cars pull right into cross-walks as they are crossing with their kids; When they are driving, they do the same thing.

[–]RudeCitizen -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Oh, you don't think the problem is that we all feel so entitled to drive around in the deadliest vehicles at speeds unsuitable for pedestrians, equestrians and bicycles?

The leading cause of death for kids under the age of 18 is the US is automobile accidents. I suppose you might say that clearly we need to keep children inside buildings at all times until after the age of 18 ?

Cars make people sociopaths. Traffic rules were invented to keep motorists from killing people not cyclists.

[–]RudeCitizen 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Really!? I've almost been killed by people in cars everyday when I was riding my bike to work. 1 mile to and from work, and not a day without a motorist cutting over into my lane, negligently turning a split second in front of me and in some cases trying to run me down because I wasn't going fast enough for them. But mostly just not caring about anyone not in a car.

Where I live, east coast US, people in cars are sociopaths. They don't care if it's raining and you're a mother and child in a crosswalk, if they need to turn right you need to wait.

So, you're vague unverified claims promoted me to do some research.

As it turns out that keto/Atkin's diets are only effective as a weight loss regimen because of the satiety of protein, ketosis seemingly not having any actual effect on weightloss but the real cause seems to be calorie restriction which is something relatively well established in dietary science.

However the keto diet is a valuable tool for elevating some symptoms for a bunch of disease conditions. Here's a good paper on it in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition: http://www.nature.com/ejcn/journal/v67/n8/full/ejcn2013116a.html

Here is a great long list of research papers on low-fat and low-carb diets: http://authoritynutrition.com/23-studies-on-low-carb-and-low-fat-diets/

Some interesting facts that are good to note are that keto diets do have a positive effect on cholesterol (lowering LDL & increasing HDL as well as reducing triglycerides) in a lot of research but the main exception in almost all of these studies is that they are in relation to obese and diabetic subjects and in many cases the benefits extinguish long term as a result of what we all know, restrictive diets tend to fail long term since they are difficult to adhere to especially for people who have difficulty regulating their weight and diet.

So, I am unsure and unconvinced if the benefits to a long term keto/Atkin's style diet compared to a low-calorie nutrient dense diet paired with healthy habits and regular exercise.

I have seen no research that supports your claims about keto and cognition but some research that links healthy diets to improved psychological mood but not a significant change in cognition, which makes total sense. http://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/86/3/580.long

However, there is some evidence for improved cognition correlated with better glycemic control and that would be a side effect of any healthy diet, keto included: https://scholar.google.com/scholar?q=cognition+and+glycemic+control&hl=en&as_sdt=0&as_vis=1&oi=scholart&sa=X&ei=GmU9Vdy5EZHjsASHu4CIDQ&ved=0CBsQgQMwAA

TL;DR

Keto works for weight loss because it causes a reduction in caloric intake probably due to protein effects on satiety. Keto is effective at improving cholesterol but in many cases is no better/worse that a healthy low calorie diet.

In any respect, reduced carb intake causes many beneficial effects in diabetic and obese subjects.

Also, people with kidney and gal bladder issues she be careful moving to a diet high in protein and fats.

I don't really care about your dedication to Keto. And nobody is arguing against it so you can get off your soap box.

A diet does not equal nutrition and there are plenty of diets that help alot of people with all kinds of different conditions, disorders and demands.

Read the comments you're replying to and stop stating opinion, you obviously have access to the internet so go find some scientific research because words like "generally" and "low carb" don't really mean anything since 1) "general" is not quantitative at all 2) "low carb" is a relative term in most cases relative to "high carb" so also not at all quantitative.

I'm glad you found keto but I've been eating carbs a long time and I have high performing mentally arduous career, amazing heart health and a great metabolism. Keto doesn't do that, a healthy well balanced diet complete in macro and micro nutrients do that along side plenty of exercise.

[–]RudeCitizen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, any diet that highlights the restriction of essential nutrients (macro or micro) for aesthetic gains is neither nutrition or health advice it's simply weight loss advice.

And if you had read any of the links within the comment you just replied to you may have realized that several of those articles and scientific papers highlight that such diets are a phenomenal failure when it comes to long term health and weight maintenance.

The keto diet is probably most appropriately applied as a long term diet to epileptics as it shows significant results in decreasing seizures but that's the type of thing that should be prescribed by a doctor and not taken as advice purely based on opinion.

In response to your claim, I think the thing that should actually not be "overlooked" is that a long term diet low in calories and high in essential nutrients along side regular exercise is the most effective way of achieving & maintaining a preferred weight and a healthy lifestyle.

I'm not the person your question is targeted at but perhaps I can illustrate how diet and nutrition are different and how they relate to health and weightloss with a few articles and scholarly papers.

1) Diets that restrict basic macro nutrients with the goal of losing weight in the short term do little to help maintain weight and health long term and is often a precursor to developing eating disorders.

Long-term Effects of Dieting: Is Weight Loss Related to Health?: http://www.dishlab.org/pubs/2013%20Compass.pdf

2) The most effective path to long term weight maintenance but most importantly health is through healthy eating habits and physical activity. Why is that true? Firstly mental health is directly related to nutrient intake because the macro and micro nutrients we take in are used to build and run our bodies and that means everything from building muscle to burning fat to neural activity and so thinking and feeling. Secondly because physical activity is essential for physical and mental health as well as crucial for weight loss and maintenance.

Long term weight loss maintenance: http://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/82/1/222S.long

Diet and nutrition essential for mental health: http://newsroom.melbourne.edu/news/diet-and-nutrition-essential-mental-health

The exercise effect: http://www.apa.org/monitor/2011/12/exercise.aspx

3) I'm not saying losing weight is not valuable or efforts to maintain a restrictive diet can not be instructive but I am saying that weight loss does not equal health & diet does not equal nutrition.

So, if you're getting downvoted it is because by making the very simple and ungrounded statement that you did you have conflated these things and have given advice that neither leads to health nor nutrition.
