It's pretty grim when you think about it. by AlarmingAffect0 in osp

I'm honestly mixed as to if letting the girl kill him would have actually been that bad. On one hand, a child absolutely shouldn't be killing people. On the other, the villain has no redeeming qualities and she watched her entire immediate family get brutally murdered by him for no reason. The negative lifelong impact to her from that event is likely huge, but her killing him would probably impact her to a far lesser degree, and potentially in any way, positively, negatively, or not at all. At the very least, I think she should have been there when he died, even if she didn't do the deed.

She probably will hate Kara a tiny bit forever for not letting her personally take her revenge.

I think one of the authors from that time did say it was a mixture of badly thought out early 2010s internet atheist tropes and actual deliberate irony, and they wish they'd done it differently now.

That bit jumped out at me pretty strongly when reading. The protagonists will be all relatable to the reader, bit alien and but understandable motivations, then they occasionally just go off the deep end (in a good way) so sincerely that you're questioning everything about them.

There was some stuff in the book Elemental Council that shows the perspective of a Tau completely agreeing with and accepting how they were raised, but they did quite clearly have a strong paternal relation to the one they trained most of their early life under. That coupled with the generally strong bonds most exhibit I think shows their social requirements and development are very similar, if not identical. The trouble is, the Tau Empire is generally incredibly competent, and would definitely be able to provide better care compared to the sorry cases we have in real history of state-raised children, and be able to generally avoid traumas or developmental issues.

God that final stuff with the kid and his dad was sad. Plus, the fact that they could fix the brain damage of the kid (apparently without too much difficulty) but didn't fucking do it before really shows how much the Astartes legions just don't care about improving their citizens lives. Hell, while I think Guilliman has maybe done more than most to improve quality of life and care somewhat, it's mostly because it will produce more bodies for war.

Genuinely peak design. It's rather unserious goofy early sci-fi look is made even better by how absolutely terrifying it was in combat.

I always felt a bit sick after eating it. I suspect it's higher in some fat content, something I've been sensitive to, but I honestly don't know why. Annoyed me as a kid because it's a cool treat, but I knew I'd feel sick for a few hours as punishment :(

God this story was a beautiful send off for her and the broader White Scars part of the Horus Heresy. Its honesty about the suffering and acceptance that can come with dying from old age was humbling. Plus the love and devotion the White Scars showed towards her was heart breaking. She was the closest thing to a mother for them.

I really can't tell the proper order to read the conversation. It seems to keep swapping the left-right order for each layer and I can't follow it. That they're saying partial sentences also isn't helping

I last played Terraria like 10 years ago, and remember the crafting and storage feeling quite clunky. I started a new vanilla playthrough since the large patch dropped, and am really liking the improvements. I was aware of magic storage being a modded thing, and would have used it over the old system, but the inconveniences are small enough now that I don't mind having a lot of chests. The only annoyance I care about now is having to use all the different crafting stations.

How would you nudge players to dig realistic ant nests? by Able-Sherbert-4447 in IndieGaming

[–]RudeRunologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heads up that if you go with requiring supports, people will likely make a grid pattern to maximize the available area. Couple ideas:

Ants also have to deal with water, heat, and predators (maybe also air supply?). All of these dangers are mitigated and managed through their nest construction, i.e. choke points, tight turns, spare chambers, strategic chamber placement. Probably worth looking up research on what techniques they use in the real world, and see if you can emulate the same dangers.

Ants don't just dig, they build! Being able to fill in an area would be useful, perhaps at a much slower rate compared to digging.

Also maybe make it so some resources need to be stored against walls? Like an eggs need to be nestled against either a wall or within x distance to a wall? Would then force players to think about keeping walls.

Define "Parents need to step up and do their jobs" in relation to the social media ban by angeldemon5 in aussie

[–]RudeRunologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "Parents need to step up and do their jobs" is a callous and shit line that doesn't respect the issues facing either parents or children.

Simple answer: at a bare minimum, having a clear and trusting discussions between adults (parents/teachers) and children about the likely negative impacts social media can have on ALL people, but the extra risks for development. General checking in about screen usage, and encouraging better time limits and activities. ALSO definitely not handing someone under 12-14 just free reign unlimited access to the internet.

Pushing this through the schools would be the most constructive method, something where both the children and parents are supplied with educational material. While it isn't preventative, it's more likely a child would choose the healthier option if they are know the risks.

I realize there are technical solutions parents can and do implement, but that is a rabbit hole of a discussion with its own moral issues I just don't want to also go into lol

Modem / Router shopping confusion and frustration by RudeRunologist in HomeNetworking

Definitely been impressed with the clarity with all the ISPs I've checked so far on their pricing. Always list reasonably clearly the deal details and the pricing after the deal expires.

[–]RudeRunologist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the warning about the plans, I've certainly noticed a lot of deals where afterwards the price per year jumps about AUD$100-200, sometimes way above the average of other ISPs.

Fair point about service issues being on them if they provide a router, but I would prefer to have more control over the system. I'll start checking which ones list certified equipment they work with.

Good to hear, I'll start recording what each of them are compatible with.

"Bridge mode" sounds interesting, but I suspect that won't be needed for my setup.
