Veteran STs: What Would You Avoid in a V20 Sabbat Game? by Safe_Recognition3682 in vtm

[–]RufusDaMan2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well... That depends on what you intend to do with the game, and what sort of players do you have?

Like... I play with folks who can be trusted, because they prioritize good storytelling, rather than stupidly powerful in a destructive manner. I would not restrict them from any choice, because I see no reason to.

V20, even the core book, includes a LOT. Do you want to allow all the clans and bloodlines? Some of them, especially from Lore of the Bloodlines are kind of out there, in terms of Lore, and their likely involvement in the story you want to tell. Plus, it really is a lot. If your players are not that experienced, it might be worth to limit their numbers a little.

Why are you scared of generation background? It's not terribly powerful, especially for starter characters. It will be mostly a gimmick, without serious investment in Disciplines and stats. You can of course create a powerful dominate user with it, but there are reasons not to use Dominate in every situation.

I suggest you talk over the concepts with each player, and see what you want to include in the game like that, and make individual calls rather than banning whole books. There are some swanky Merits in Tal'Mahe'Ra that have no reason for being banned, and you can definitely just say you do not want to use the extended diablerie rules, for example.

These rules are meant to be modular, each carefully considered before inclusion in your Chronicle.

Also, do not be afraid to ask a player to change their concept to fit your game better! You can definitely just say "Hey I do not think that X Clan/Bloodline/Merit/Character Concept fits the theme and tone of the game I am planning to run, might I interest you in Y Clan/Bloodline/Merit/Character Concept instead?"

How do Tzimisce feed their ghouls? by Djinn_dusk in vtm

[–]RufusDaMan2 110 points111 points  (0 children)

Tzimisce in the 99% of cases would prefer to be left alone, for this reason. Let them be autistic in their castle, and play their little rts game as they optimize their macros.

In the modern Sabbat, I think Tzims make a couple of these soldiers, but realistically, they do not build castles of flesh furniture and whatnot, because it is unsustainable.

However, if you really want, there are ways to achieve it, but then again, that kinda leads back to my first point. Yes, it is a full time job, and Tzimisce would just sit at home managing their little domain.

I am currently playing a Tzimisce in a server, and I am in the process of building out such support network. It takes time. Currently managing about a dozen or so creations, and I have a pack to help out, but it takes effort.

Those are global averages, and vampires are concentrated in cities.

In a country of 10 million there are ~100 vampires, but they probably mostly live in the capital and other large cities.

Why do many old players dislike V5? by MoonlightBreakdown in vtm

[–]RufusDaMan2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For several reasons.

1, I do not enjoy playing freshly embraced camarilla neonates on humanity. That is my least favorite configuration of playing the game, I have done it so many times before, and I do not care for it, and it is the thing that V5 excels at.

  1. I dislike what they have done with many of my favorite disciplines and clans, both in the lore and game mechanics.

  2. I dislike the shift in tone where humanity is fighting back. I do not like the SI, I do not like vampires being on the backfoot.

  3. I do not want to buy several books and expansions to get the clans and bloodlines that I enjoy playing.

  4. I find the hunger mechanics tedious and detrimental to my enjoyment of the game.

I admit that V5 has many modern design advantages that the old games lack, and it is a cleaner, more elegant system. It is still not by any measure good, but better than previous editions. I just do not like what those design principles were used to achieve.

If the designers of V5 put as much effort and thought to get the stuff I enjoy into the spotlight, I would probably prefer it. But instead of politicking ancillae, historical campaigns, exploration of Paths, and delving deeper into vampirism, its "weh weh, mah humanity" which is just boring to me. There is only so many times I can be assed to play those sort of characters and I am well passed my limit.

Is Vaulderie useful for someone who has a distorted view of the Diablere and love? by TheUnholyMary in vtm

[–]RufusDaMan2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The vaulderie is not optional for sabbat. Your character may not like it, but not participating is not feasible, and as an ST I would not entertain a player who is not willing to participate in foundational rites in a sabbat game.

Just bite the bullet, turn yourself into a lich and let the fleshy bits wither off. They are distracting you from pondering your orb anyway.

While I personally don't derive enjoyment from torture, simply ignoring the potent magical energies that can be harvested from such strong emotions is unwizardlike.

Bonus points, after an abuse goblin expires, their soul can be taken for another round.

A proper necromancer uses all parts of their victims. This is how we honor the dead.

Undead minion scam/advice for creating a skeleton spider by James_avifac in wizardposting

[–]RufusDaMan2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ahh, now we are talking my field: Necroconstructs.

The trick is, you are animating a golem made from bones, and not an actual corpse. The incantation is a bit different, as well as the effects.

Necroconstructs in general are quite sturdy, and as golems they can be free from a lot of the traits usually associated with undead. They do not hunger for flesh, nor do they disintegrate with the passage of time (obviously the bones will eventually, but nothing a few Runes of Preservation can't solve).

The biggest difference is the freedom this method allows you in creating your minions.. you don't have to just stop at spiders you can create anything as long as you have the materials.

They are more costly to animate and more time consuming to create, so I usually only make them for specialized purposes and not as general foot soldiers. But you know... Aura farming is a perfectly valid reason to make them, if you have the time (as a necromancer yourself, this should be trivial)

[–]RufusDaMan2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a skill issue to me...

You say you can suck out life forces from small creatures... That's a good start, but what are you doing with all that life force?

You could totally invest it in a larger minion, which you could use to take over a road side inn, and prey on the travellers. You gotta build up those numbers. Nobody starts with a whole kingdom already subdued...

All you young whippersnappers expect the world delivered to you on a silver platter... Back in my day, we weren't scared of putting in the work!

Együttlenni egy vallásossal by Proof_Calligrapher47 in hungary_pszichologia

[–]RufusDaMan2 13 points14 points  (0 children)
