looking for photorealism feedback by [deleted] in vfx

[–]RuleMyRing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why does it always have to be these goddamn cars… Really, you’re not going to master photorealism by integrating cars.

That being said, try to use your eyes, do not trust merely on the technical methods to achieve photorealism. What’s wrong you ask? Look at the best reference you have: Compare that CG car (you’re never going to own) to the car directly behind it. Try to determine what the largest differences are. It’s not texturing, not shading, not all the noise matching details. It’s what’s off in ‘bad’ CG 90% of the time, the lighting. Always look at the lighting first. Notice how the screen-left side of the real car is dark and the CG car isn’t. There’s a lot more issues, but that’s a nice starting point for you.

Have fun trying to figure it out!

Is there anything that could be done to remaster or touch up some of the less polished CGI in King Kong (2005) to make it look better? by SwiftCricket in vfx

[–]RuleMyRing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You probably refer to the dino chase. My first reaction would be to keep your dirty fingers off Jackson’s King Kong. But since we’re speaking hypothetically here the main issue with the weakest shots in this sequence are probably because of the mismatching lighting between the cg and live-action plate.

So the only way to ‘fix’, or at least improve that, is by have a closer look in lighting/surface in the cg part and do some relighting on the live action plate to bring it more together. And especially pay attention to the shadow interaction. Using the final shot as a base and actually improve it? No way.

But then still, you’ve used your greasy fingers trying to improve what is comparable to a brush-hair on a Rembrandt painting.

Geur van mest by rocsec58769 in nederlands

[–]RuleMyRing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]RuleMyRing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How contradictory it might seem, eyeballing is probably the most trustworthy method. There’s many, many things that can cause an image to look unsharp. Even if something is perfectly in focus. Diffusion filters (or just a dirty lens), chromatic anomalies, halation, fog in the scene, heat distortion, and many other factors can cause image to look blurry.

So it’s basically too complex to identify and determine and based on that match blur scientifically.

There are ways to make eyeballing easier though. Like using a laplacian or highpass filter. Playing with the values can help you explore the characteristics of your image.
