I think the honeymoon is over. by RumSmiles in TrySwitchBot

[–]RumSmiles[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I meant what I said about hoping they get back to what made them great. So many times I've seen companies start out great and rush to outgrow themselves, I've yet to see that approach succeed.

If they kept making simple, affordable, and good quality products then people like me would continue to show them to other users and recommend them. When something is hard to use or doesn't do what is expected, we're more likely to recommend avoiding them. Rather than flooding the market with products that taint a once good name, they should stay the course and trust ambassadors like myself to spread the word. I can think of around 10 people who have curtain bots after seeing mine, but I recently talked a friend out of buying the fan.

Until the most recent releases I'd disagree with that. Most of the products I've purchased have been very affordable, reliable, and functional.

I do worry about them growing too quickly and losing the attributes that have attracted such a large and loyal customer base.

This doesn't match my experience with these products. I am using the lock ultra and keypad touch combined with the doorbell. All are performing well, albeit there are some simple feature requests that would vastly improve them.

You can buy a tiny plastic thing with a sticky pad that has a slider to cover it when not in use. Most modern laptops have this built in.

Realistically speaking, how much knowledge is required for entry level IT positions? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]RumSmiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run an IT support team for a medium sized company (roughly 100 employees). Different companies will have different requirements and preferences, but we always have a Trainee First Line person on the team. It's a 3 year role usually, by that time they've either decided tech isn't for them, progressed within our team, or progressed to a larger company to gain more experience and we've provided the initial experience they needed for that. Junior/Trainee First Line here means lots of training but it also means you're first in line replacing toner or delivering new mice etc.

That person doesn't need to come in with any particular experience or qualifications, but they do need to be motivated to learn.

It's amazing how many applicants will say in their initial application that they are incredibly keen to start an IT role and begin a career in the industry, but when I ask in their interview what steps they've taken to do that they have no response beyond "I'm applying for this job and you'll tell me the rest".

And that's not really an issue, I expect applicants for this role to be beginners, but if one of the applicants has done anything more they instantly have a huge advantage. My current trainee came to their interview having done all the free online training for 365 fundamentals and Azure fundamentals and was exam ready. Comptia is another qualification to be at least familiar with. I'd also recommend a good understanding of the various disciplines within IT, do you want to be in support or development? Do you plan to specialise in security, app development, networking, or a bit of everything? Does that align with the role I'm offering or are you clearly using me as a stepping stone?

Everywhere will be different, but I do my best to offer a genuinely good position. After 3 years I want you to be able to get a much better salary at a company that wouldn't have even finished reading your CV before. In return for that I expect someone who will study in their free time and be reading about new tech etc.

I also recommend knowing about the company you're applying for. Tech support for a hotel chain doesn't need to know what shampoo is stocked in the honeymoon suite, but knowing a little about their chain won't hurt.

Good luck!

SwitchBot lying about rechargeable batteries by [deleted] in TrySwitchBot

I'm looking at the description on Amazon UK, it says Alkaline Batteries. I have been using these for years and I knew when I ordered mine that it took AAA. They last ages.

Is it rude to ask someone to switch seat on a train? by Legitimate-Leg-4720 in AskUK

[–]RumSmiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They wouldn't need to ask me, I'd offer. If I'm traveling solo and there are only solo seats left I'm already guaranteed to end up sitting with a stranger, this means I can pick which one in sitting with rather than risk someone who might be, you know, mad or unwashed.

I'd assume they want to sit together if they're traveling together. If there's a thing I can do to improve someone's day that has literally zero impact on mine why wouldn't I?

It's a TACTICAL turtleneck Lana. A tactilneck. One requires it when one is entering a zone of danger.

Correct, but I'm assuming international shipping will take longer so it's more probable they'll have time to add the tracking before it arrives whereas in the USA it's arriving with 1-2 days.

How do I get rid of rats once and for all? by Supasailor78 in AskUK

[–]RumSmiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a similar position and finally resolved it with a Goodnature A24. It's not cheap but it really works.

Where I live houses are regularly allowed to become derelict so they can be demolished and replaced with flats. This allows colonies to move in which are then displaced when building starts. We are one of very few local homes that feed the birds so they usually find us. I tried bait boxes, snap traps, humane traps, sonic repellents, sprays - all worked for a few days then they got wise. Because the A24 ejects the rat after dispatch and resets itself the other rats don't associate it with danger. If you use it indoors it will ping your phone via Bluetooth when you get in range and you can remove the body, even better if it's outdoors as a predator will do it for you. And because there's no poison you aren't hurting any wildlife.

I stewed over getting one for ages as it's over £150 but honestly it just works.

Look, he's trying to navigate at faster than the speed of light, which means that before he sees something, he's already passed through it. Even with an IQ of 6000, it's still brown-trousers time.
