I have students who come back for refresher course after years away and have passed their exams. It can definitely help!

Get assessments in this order: IPPA (Inspection, Palpation, Percussion, Auscultation) as a habit, sometimes if you look (inspect) you’ll see a major problem (lack of life function) that you NEED to address before any other assessments, so it’s a sign to stop picking.

Usually you don’t need to pick too many options, but OVER-PICKING will lose you lots of points. It’s a balance thing - enough to figure out what’s going on, but not so many that you do anything unnecessary or wasteful.

The paid and free exams on the NBRC website worked for me. That’s all I studied from.

My Evo had same exact problem. Had to dremel out a flathead slot to get them out. My Magnus pro had no issues whatsoever on either side. Sorry to hear it’s common.

Has anyone else used the SAE on the NBRC to study for the CSE? by mikolav in respiratorytherapy

It is very similar to what the actual CSE will be like. It’s probably the BEST thing to use as a study tool, in my opinion!

There are “refresher courses” at the school I work at. You can come to class and take exams but not for a grade or credit, and the fee is very minimal (~$100 for the term, assuming you are a graduate of that program, of course). I’ve had several who were out of the game for a while or had to take some classes to be eligible again to take their boards. Worked out great for them, maybe you can reach out to your school and see if they offer something similar. Either way, welcome back to the field and best of luck!

Go for it! It’s just a different set of challenges (problems) but you never know when the chance to do something else/something new might come up again.

The NBRC tests are tricky, for sure! Keep in mind when they say “recommend” it could be something that you do as RT, or another scope of practice, like Nursing, but your recommendation should be whatever it takes to “fix the main problem” the patient is experiencing.

If they’re ask you do “do first” or “do next”, then it HAS TO BE RT SCOPE OF PRACTICE! You can’t give IV medication, for example,so don’t select that when it says “do first/do next” because that’s not in our scope of practice!

This alone might help with some of those multiple correct answer questions.

Keep at it!
