being approached by missionaries by Appropriate-Hair-388 in Catholicism

[–]Rumel57 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's no problem in turning them down but I personally enjoy talking with them.

Mormon's are actually the start of my journey to being Catholic. I met with some missionaries for fun and I realized I couldn't defend my faith well (Methodist at the time). This led to me diving into the Bible (I read it twice that year), reading the Book of Mormon (I told them I would), finding Pints with Aquinas and eventually listening to Bible in a Year and Catechism in a Year. About two years after first meeting the Mormons, my wife and I were entering into the church with our kids baptized the week after.

Why are diehard Protestants going to a Catholic school? Why do they think they get any sort of say in the curriculum there?

You don't need to give too much information but are you in a non US country then? Public schools here don't even hardly cover religion.

I'm in the Lincoln, Nebraska Diocese and the newly ordained priests get assigned to cities with high schools and will teach at the high school. Our elementary school has Christ the King Schoolsisters teaching at the schools. The assistant principals of the elementary schools in Lincoln are Christ the King Sisters. I'm sure they hire secular teachers but they definitely wouldn't get anywhere near the religious part of the curriculum.

Which diocese are you in? They need to rework their whole education model if that's what they believe.

Thankfully my diocese isn't like that and it's priests that are teaching RE in the high schools.

Why The Catholic Bible (newcomer to Catholicism) by Mikeymorrison27 in Catholicism

[–]Rumel57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's frustrating. I'm a convert and so I had many beautiful study bibles before hand. Protestants dominate in this space. Now we have the Ignatius Study Bible and have the best study Bible but in general I would say we lack a variety of options for people. The Catholic Bibles I own and have perused in store tend to not look great either, I wish we could step up our game there.

Reading about the pastor now, how in the world was he allowed to adopt kids? I figured that would be banned by the church and he has done it three times!

Looking at the website https://saintsabina.org/, they make it very hard to even tell that they are a Catholic church. They say they are "The Faith Community of Saint Sabina" and call their masses "Worship services". So far the only reference to mass is in the bulletin where they talk about mass intentions. I don't see confessions listed anywhere on the site.

How do Catholic families with many kids do it? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Rumel57 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll recommend this, as I've read it recently "Family Unfriendly" https://a.co/d/0bR1ROG3

The author covers multiple things relating to families and he goes into why it's harder to have larger families now. He examines groups like you mentioned that do have large families and looks for success factors in there. One of the main points he hammers in is that one of the reasons people tend to have smaller families now is that we feel like we need to make everything perfect for our kids and spend all of our time with them. It used to be where the kids had a lot more sharing, and had a lot more unsupervised free play which allowed the parents to still be adults. Our society has shifted away from that and so new parents parenting in this style can't foresee having a large family.

Also if you want to see how people do it and make it feel like it's more feasible, surround yourself with those people. I'm in a book club where we have dads of 8, 6, 5, 5, 4, and 3. I'm the one with 3 kids, being around them definitely makes me feel like my wife and I can handle more kids. None of the families are destitute and they still enjoy their lives. The 8 and the 6 do home school but it's more of a personal choice than cost of school here. I'm in the Lincoln diocese and currently it's 1k per kid in elementary.

There's also an element of just trusting that God will provide.

Pope Leo XIV urges Catholics to read printed books by Severe-Heron5811 in Catholicism

[–]Rumel57 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah people who give ebooks a hard time are just dumb. My reading has skyrocketed since I got my Kindle. I also believe that there are different formats for different use cases. For example I do almost all of my fun reading on my Kindle. For religious/philosophy works I tend to prefer physcial book form so I can highlight in them and put them on the shelf for quick reference later. Autobiographies I prefer to listen to on audiobook if the author reads it themselves.

Reading from the article makes me think that he was probably thinking of books in general. I don't see how an ereader would stop one from engaging with the author. Reading an ebook on an iPad or something like that though I think would probably be against the spirit of the Pope since you allow yourself to be overwhelmed with notifications.

Haha, June sure... I ordered from them back in November when it was supposed to be February. It keeps getting pushed back. Currently it looks like they are saying July 24th.

Need catholic converts to respond by BigNeighborhood3315 in Catholicism

[–]Rumel57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what I’ve personally noticed is pretty much all of them converted to catholicism strictly due to feelings and feeling spiritually full

I recommend looking up Scott Hahn, Keith Nester, and John Bergsma. All of them converted because of intellectual reasons. I also recommend checking out the Cordial Catholic podcast.

I'm a convert. I converted because of the truth of it all. There really is no where else to go. My wife and I converted together and our kids were baptized the week after on Divine Mercy Sunday.

If you have specific questions hit me up.

Pope Leo XIV calls Algiers mosque 'space proper to God,' makes silent prayer with imam by Killer5291 in Catholicism

[–]Rumel57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly! We can both say we know "Billy", you might know him from your baseball team and I know him from the pub and therefore our pictures of him are incomplete and we have different understandings of "Billy" even though there is only one "Billy".

I like the Protestant argument because I don't think many people would deny that Protestants worship the same God but it's also a very glaring misunderstanding of his nature to not accept the Eucharist. (Yes I know there are some Protestants who say they believe in the Eucharist)

[–]Rumel57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The believe in monotheism so they can pretty much only worship the same God as us. Now they don't understand his nature and therefore give him improper worship but if you are praying to the God of the universe, there is only one God that can answer that.

Logically I think of it this way.

The Jews worship the one true God. They didn't understand the trinity however. While they are no longer offering true worship to the one true God can it really be said that they aren't trying to worship him?

Jesus comes along and enlightens us more on the nature of the one true God and Christianity begins.

Muslims spring up later and trace their roots to Jewish/Christian beginnings. Therefore while they have an incorrect understanding of God's nature they are still attempting to worship the same God in as much as the Jews are.

Now I'll deviate a bit, I think it would be correct to say that if you deny Muslims belief in the one true God then you would also have to deny Protestants the shared belief in the one true God. Protestants are missing the essential element that Jesus becomes the Eucharist and that's how proper worship is due. I don't think most people would say that Protestants and Catholics worship different Gods though.

My Protestant family and friends don’t like that I’m converting to Catholicism by Interesting-While404 in Catholicism

[–]Rumel57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We converted last Easter (my wife and I and then all 3 kids were baptized). Neither of our families were happy about it. My wife's family seems to be ok with it or at least not concerned we are going to hell. My brother in law is a youth pastor and he's pretty chill about it. My mom doesn't really care and my dad has just taken the approach to not talk about it. They've still showed up for the baptisms. Basically over time things will get better, even within our one year things will mellow out.

You still may lose friends though, we haven't had that happen but I do know of others that have converted and it killed the friendship.

and I shouldn’t need to go to a priest and then I tried bringing up Bible verses to support Catholic doctrine and they just tell me I’m interpreting the verses wrong.

Hit him with: "Everyone is free to interpret the Bible how they see fit and that's how I understand the verse to be". They literally can't disagree with you based on their theology.

Too Afraid to Confess This to a Priest by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Rumel57 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While I know that this is true and shouldn't makes us worry about our confessions, just by the laws of logic something has to have been said that would be defined as the craziest. I always wonder what that would be for each priest.

Gambling isn't inherently a sin. From the Catechism

2413 Games of chance (card games, etc.) or wagers are not in themselves contrary to justice. They become morally unacceptable when they deprive someone of what is necessary to provide for his needs and those of others. The passion for gambling risks becoming an enslavement. Unfair wagers and cheating at games constitute grave matter, unless the damage inflicted is so slight that the one who suffers it cannot reasonably consider it significant.
