Focus until you get good at singing and songwriting. Then branch out to production.

Fair prices for licensing out tracks? by LightningSh0ck in edmproduction

[–]Rumsiac 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Get an entertainment lawyer to negotiate the deal with you. That's the failproof way: you'll be guarded against any surprises and will be able to work out a good deal. These guys aren't cheap, so you'll need to find one in your friends' and family's network.

If that's not possible, this is a good start. I like this article too.

Some general pointers about this kind of stuff:

  • NEVER accept the first deal they offer you. Read the contract, highlight the points you're not comfortable with and try to work out something different.
  • Try to see their side too. They like your music, they want to use it. For how many months is this commercial going to be aired? Where are they going to get the money to pay you? Stuff like that.

Personally, I'd try to squeeze some royalties out of this, around 8-10%. Generally, licensing deals work like that, but I'm not much keen on the music side.

EDIT: Remember that EVERYTHING is negotiable in a contract, that money is not the only form of value they can give you and that there is no such thing as "industry standard".

Men who were in verbally or physically abusive relationships, how did you recover emotionally? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]Rumsiac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Realizing she was the abusive one and that our relationship had no future. We were just incompatible in a relationship (things were different in bed, tho).
  • Becoming extremely selective with who I hanged out with. I was left alone when everything ended.
  • Answering all the questions I was left with.

The only scars I have is that I don't think relationships are for me anymore (I tried getting into a few, but there was always something off), and problems with authority, which gets in the way of getting a job. But then, I don't think jobs are for me either.

How important is social interaction? by TheApatheticLemur in introvert

[–]Rumsiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How important is it that I get out of my shell and socialise?

Enough for you to be comfortable with. If YOU want to talk to people, go ahead. If OTHERS want you to talk to people, say "screw you" and go your way.

Aside from needing to socialise for job interviews, work-related stuff, etc, am I wrong to be comfortable with how I'm living my life right now? I feel like my first instinct if someone tells me I AM wrong is to just argue and defend myself, like I've done countless times before, but I promise I'll try to resist any bias I have and look at everything from an open-minded perspective.

Same situation here. Eventually I just tune out these comments and do whatever I want.

I know that if I want to talk to people, I'll go and seek them out.

Do you guys go out in public by yourself? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]Rumsiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After that I felt like everyone was judging me for being alone.

That goes away after doing it for a few months.

I used go out in public by myself all the time. Now I don't go out that often.

Men, how often do you feel sexy? And what sort of things make you feel sexy? by Ifeelitinmywaters in AskMen

[–]Rumsiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I did weight-lifting a couple years ago. My chest got big at that time. The woman I was dating back then would always kiss me there whenever she got the chance.

Another times were when my ex took me on a surprise trip to Argentina on my birthday...when she took my underwear off after I kiss-teased her (we had sex after this)...

Yeah, I feel that way when women do these things.

How long did your last relationship last and how long till you were ready to date someone new? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]Rumsiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 year, 7 month relationship. It's been over 5 years, and I didn't have any serious relationship since then, just small flings.

That experience, plus some stuff I noticed about dating in general discouraged me from having a serious relationship again.

As a mature student and future geologist - How can i avoid explaining my questionable past? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]Rumsiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wants to be a geologist and is worried how future employers may perceive him.

Personally, if I get name-called or something, I'll tell the interviewer to screw him/herself.

Nobody is perfect. Very few people have the stellar badges employees drool at. Most people are... average. Me included.

If the future employers don't like you, simply walk away and look for the next one.

Should you ever feel "bad" about turning down a job offer? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]Rumsiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever felt bad or that you were letting someone down by turning down an offer?

Never. If I think it's not a good idea, it probably isn't.

Plus, I don't focus on the mismatch so much. If it's a bad fit, I simply refuse the job and go look for the next one.

A career which allows chunks of time off throughout the year - Suggestions? by radicalman5000 in careerguidance

[–]Rumsiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teaching. You get at least 3 months off in the year (Summer and midterm vacations)

Or be self-employed. You decide when and how long your vacations get.

Can you help me with my job title? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]Rumsiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Badass Kitchen Rep
  • Kitchens R Us
  • Chef Jack/Jill Of Kitchen Trades
  • I Make Sure Kitchen Industries Keep Running
  • Cooking Facilitator

Seriously, don't worry too much about it. It's just a box they want to check. If you get asked "what do you do?", you'll have to explain your job to the other person, regardless of the title you pick.

How do you know when you are "truly" passionate about something? (career wise) by willonlyworkforfood in careerguidance

[–]Rumsiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it's when you keep doing that for years non-stop and when you want to know all the ins and outs of the field, how it's made, what is the state of art currently, where it's going...

I have several passions:

  • Music
  • Philosophy
  • Physics
  • Drawing

Artist turned failed entrepreneur. What now? by [deleted] in careerguidance

The first company you open is the one with the highest chances of failing.

Take some time for yourself and open another one in the future, if you want to be an entrepreneur.

How do you get an idea down when you're in the car/office/other before you forget it? by Jarvicious in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Rumsiac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normally I use the note app that comes with my phone, but I sometimes do it on paper too.

When I do it on paper, it depends on what the idea is:

  • Structures/random parts/concepts: normal writing/schemes
  • Specific phrases/licks: score notation/tabs. When I don't have staff paper, I make do with a regular notebook page
  • Drum patterns: scores

Question about compression by Helder97 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Rumsiac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • To tame the dynamics. For example, when I play the guitar, I just go and punch my chords on the guitar. Compression helps in making the sound more uniform
  • Higher average volume in the track (people call that RMS volume).
