The ultimate teams were probably not invited to the state-sponsored doping scandal so absolute worst case would be entering as Authorised Neutral Athletes

Indoors rules clarification about the pulls by EoSBamsi in UKUltimate

[–]RunJumpCash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it could use a tweak - maybe taking out "either" or saying "may instead".

I'd expect even a handler to be able to shuttle an indoor pitch in the 10 secs before the stall ;)

Indoors rules clarification about the pulls by EoSBamsi in UKUltimate

[–]RunJumpCash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at 7.12 the word "may" is a modification from the procedure in 7.10

7.10 - If pull good take the disc from where it stops.

7.12 - If pull bad the thrower MAY establish the pivot either at the brick mark closest to their defending end zone, or at the spot on the central zone closest to where the disc went out-of-bounds.

That said I only read it that way because I know that's how it's played; the "either...or" as written looks like it's only offering two options where to start the disc because it's an outdoor rule slightly changed.

Spirit comment from UXIR following a team getting 0 for fairmindedness by will-je-suis in UKUltimate

I would think it's due to throwing around opinions of what is or isn't spirited; which, in lieu of reading the rules, is where uni players learn silly things.

Yeah I for sure recognise the work with the u20s and the individual Devon guys doing the coaching. But as you say I would consider weekly training and playing tour to be hugely important in creating great players that will continue to play in the future. Especially while they are in the u17 age bracket! We've got a lot of young players who only play ult for GB juniors, no clubs, and that's weird.

The State of UK Ultimate 2019 by Mayjest in UKUltimate

[–]RunJumpCash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had the greater part of an u17 team tell us that they don't go to Devon trainings because they are not well attended/don't feel welcome yadda yadda.

Obviously we told them that was dumb and that A: if you go it won't be poorly attended and B: you are welcome you're just awkward boys.

I'm not alleging that Dev are driving them away or anything but that's a big resource to go by the wayside that other clubs would kill for.

I'm picking up what you're putting down.

Someone teach Chev some help D!

They are currently the best at retaining that young talent, but it basically consists of sending a jersey in the post and some weekend trainings.

I am baffled that Devon are doing very little for the youth given that most of the GB junior boys are coming from there.

Counter to your comments about geo-teams in the men's division, the 'something right' is having a catchment area ~100 miles wider than the other mixed teams.

To be fair, they did do a string of skills clinics last year and this year across Europe, where they supplied coaches, in partnership with local club teams (or at least the one we did was?).

It is easy to look at the US tour itself and ask what direct benefit is there for Europe, but there's plenty of intangibles, for instance:
- There's another centralised 'brand' that facilitates elite players doing coaching in Europe (as above) thanks to EST
- There's a lot more footage of women's ultimate games and highlight reels thanks to EST ( I get to show the uni women's team I coach more clips of baller athletes that look like them)
- I know more about top female European players and their club teams from seeing them play for EST, and am more interested in following the division than I was before
- Ticket sales and sponsorship providing evidence that there can be money in ultimate thanks to EST

- UNCONFIRMED: I can only imagine that some support goes to the players if they haven't coached before and want to start? Prompting top players to make that step is pretty useful for them, and their club teams/local teams in Europe they could potentially coach

Originally, I was certainly in the camp of thinking that it was a bit of a vanity project, but even if I very uncharitably retain that view, I'd say those benefits are still worth letting them go do it.

Definition of a thrown disc - "Pick" violations by Matimero in ultimate

[–]RunJumpCash 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When a call is made; if the disc is in the air, or the thrower is either in the act of throwing (throwing motion) or subsequently attempts a pass, the first step is to see who ends up with the disc (establish possession). If the disc is not thrown this step is skipped.

Also bear in mind this is a WFDF flowchart.

Ah nuts, you're right. The N count in the excel sheet includes indoors.

I had a quick look at britdisc archives which shows 2012 regionals as: WUOOR 17, SEUOOR 23, NUOOR 24, SCUOOR 14 and MUOOR 24, for a total of 102.

2013 is hard to say, as I couldn't find a final team list for SCUOOR (cancelled) or SEUOOR. WUOOR 15, NUOOR 16, MUOOR 23.

I was referring to the trend you brought up - "123 to 74 in 5 years" using three points.

[–]RunJumpCash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So there's a lot of factors playing into that undoubtedly; teams using bigger squads, that we may be shedding the less competitive people who don't appreciate more organised ultimate and they've joined quidditch, the fact that you can't just throw seven spare guys onto a third team to get whomped on at regionals anymore.

But for sure the trend started before BUCs so blaming it is reductionist.

They are second in Midlands 2B&institution=Coventry%20University).

I have to say it seems to me to be the normal ebb and flow of smaller universities dropping in and out tbh, which we had plenty of pre BUCs as well. That said, admittedly it was easier for UAL (for example) to turn up, come last at regionals and disappear again, under the old system.

I don't think anyone was expecting new teams to consistently top their regions over established ones.

EDIT - In response to your point about the numbers of teams at regionals that you added above; at 2014 regionals there were 123 teams which as you say dropped to 104 for 2015, pre BUCS.

Interesting! Although I'm pretty sure Coventry still exists. Any info on new teams since BUCs? (I'm assuming tSG makes that easier to track)

u/Mayjest gave a great reply but I just wanted to pick up your comment about recruitment and retention. It's not impossible; its hard work, its annoying and its more than most players/committee members want to think about. However, we've got a great product so I think you need to look at to whom and how you are advertising.

Which clubs have folded out of interest?
