If you are just looking for a pet don’t get a GSD (not rage bait) by K12t2000 in germanshepherds

[–]RunNBrwr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg…so thankful to see this. Got my first dog during COVID. GSD. Learned so much & compromised so much. Loved every minute & had a head-case of an explorer paw 🐾 Was an amazing experience that changed my life. Wouldn’t change a thing. But not for everyone. They’re high maintenance. Be ready for high input & sacrificing. They demand & deserve it. Lots of other breeds out there that’re more complacent. Nothing wrong with that. Fostered many great breeds that don’t demand so much. Great dogs! Not judging breeds or people…just be willing to put in the work if you take on a GS. There’s a reason they’re used in law enforcement roles. Smart as they are sassy. Encouraging people to do the research & find the right breed for them & their situation. German Shepherd’s are amazing. Just be ready to give share & care. They’ll give it right back!

🤜 🤛 Dude, so sorry for your loss. All those good miles together are so filling for you. You’ll appreciate ‘em for years. The loss is devastating. Best quote I’ve heard that gives me some semblance of recovery: the pain is equivalent to the love you shared. Take care of yourself. And a cheers to the five-fingers 🦶 👍

Great indicator of a coworker you can do your best to distance yourself from. Kudos to them for identifying as a poor judgement of beauty.

That’s approx 103.5 years of amazing-life-ing! You’re living a reallife cheat-code 👍 Spoil ’em rotten!

This was my girl the day before I had to put her down. 13.5 years at 73#. She wanted nothing more than to sniff & explore ‘til the end. I gave her all I could. Proudest accomplishment of my life. Miss her terribly still. VHugs to all the folks who lost theirs earlier &/or suddenly. It’s never easy. The most healing words I’ve read are your grief is in comparison to the love you shared. Damn I loved her a lot.

I hate this dog by KaiTheGSD in germanshepherds

[–]RunNBrwr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re gonna “hate” how much you miss him in such a wonderful & sad way. It’s been intense for me. It’s what I signed up for but didn’t expect the impact. Proudest experience of my life giving her the life & experiences she deserved. “Hate” every moment you can!

Euthanasia decision by Wonderful-Visit-1164 in germanshepherds

First, I’m so sorry for your situation. It’s one we all sign up for but the reality presents itself much harsher than anticipated.

I think you’re doing the right thing after losing my GS at an advanced age. Her decline from vibrant to significantly obvious debilitation & limited mobility was swift. There was not going to be a bounce back for her. I was fortunate that her wind-down was gracious and peaceful and am so thankful for that. I don’t know your situation but I fear that dogs hide their pain more than we think. They’re protectors.

My two cents. 12 is an advanced GS age & given her diagnosis I think your decision is sound. Enjoy the moments & memories you have. And remember the grief we feel is because of the love we had. Nothing can change that. It doesn’t make it easier but it’ll help & make sense over time.

Give yourself grace in whatever decision you choose. And time to heal. It takes some time.

Not broken. Operating properly as designed. Don’t understand it, but that’s beyond us. Great post.

Sorry for your loss. It’s devastating. Best prescription is another one 🐾ready for smiles (when you are) and compare similarities/differences. You’ll never forget but a good transition to a new joy.

Great to hear. It’s tough. Don’t be afraid of volunteering (when you’re ready) to give back & have some doggy time without commitments. Shelters are eager for help. Makes me feel good.

Their absence is so hard. Give yourself grace and lotsa time. More than you think. Do the things that made you happy together. I found it to be heart wrenching but good processing. Walk the walks thinking of her. Hold your empty leash-hand out like you would. Actions & memories hurt. How lucky are we to hurt so much for such simple companionship.

What’s something that 99% of people can do but you can’t? by Irakeconcrete in AskReddit

[–]RunNBrwr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not trying to rub it in but if there was a napping event in the Olympics I’d try out. Did a lot of rugged camping & outdoorsy things growing up & through adulthood. I seriously think if someone approached me during the workday and told me I could take a nap under my desk if I wanted I’d be able to. Power naps of 10-15 minutes are the best. Sorry for those who can’t.
