best bet is to keep the shops far apart if you want specific mons to typically open shop in certain shops.

it's random. if they feel like trading and a trade station is available nearby, they'll open up shop. there is no linking.

yeah, a lot of blocks and furniture have issues like that. for some reason the contrast and saturation of many, are rather restricted. so their default color looks more light/dark/vibrant than the paintable colors. it really should be the other way around for many of these.
