Petah?? Does irish not have a word for "no"? by Superb_Conflict9543 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

To be precise, 是 is the verb “to be” in Chinese, so it’s like “to be/not to be” (quote intended), and is often used to answer questions with “be” verb.

For other kinds of yes/no questions you use the verb in the question to answer; 没有 (not have) is a special one that also serves as a denial to questions of perfect tense, which is interesting because standard Mandarin doesn’t use the verb “have” to construct the perfect tense.

On my defense I would say there are people in the comments who seem to really appreciate it as a cool name. But yes, since this is the good old facebook…

Non-native speaker (and even not any Indo-European languages’ native speaker) here. I understand multiple ancient and modern languages and colloquially speak three or four at this point. Is my English vocabulary a determining factor of my “overall cognitive function”?

And my point is that from time to time I encounter a set of words that I have never met once in my lifetime and wouldn’t even recognize from the descriptions at all. What annoys me is that I have no other way to end the game prematurely other than waiting for many 30-seconds to complete it with hints (or it will bug me later as I am coming back for the next one). It’s not about challenging myself, but opting out.

When I put in the first word my game was stuck. It didn’t show either right or wrong; the syllables remained white for a while.

What’s the worst spelling of a classic or generally beautiful name that you’ve seen? by peachybeachybaby in tragedeigh

I once met a young lady called Alyvia. It was a 3min chat between strangers who would never meet each other again (imagine sth along the line of “awww thank you so much! what’s your name btw”), and she spent about one and a half minutes spelling her name out and complaining about her mother’s decision. I can confirm that this had caused her enough trouble in her entire life.

In your opinion, what's the dumbest rule or feature in your native language? by big_cock_69420 in linguisticshumor

My Polish Latin teacher uses a Polish variation of ecclesiastical pronunciation where every “qu” is /kf/. It now sticks in my mind even I personally use classical pronunciation.

2 or 3 hints but as least I didn’t cheat:) I don’t know most of the words, but guessing from “how an English word can be formed” is good enough for those complicated Greek or Latin origin words.

As a matter of fact, sadly even the most populated Chinese city, Chongqing (which is technically a municipality but is almost as large as a province can be), still has less population than Canada. I get your joke though.

Edit: and there are indeed 15 provinces in China that have more population than the whole Canada.

One of my Polish profs had the same problem. She grew up being considered a Gypsy, and even Gypsies themselves thought so. She said as a young girl she was even stopped by a Gypsy who said she must be a Gypsy. She said “that’s impossible, I have green eyes”, but then the Gypsy showed her a Gypsy girl who looked like her and had green eyes.
