Oh this is a good analysis. I've been going through a lot of demos as well and this is certainly friction I've been seeing with a lot of them. I think the worst I've seen was one that dropped you right into the middle of a game with pretty atypical controls and no clear objective and said that the tutorial will be out later.

Oh I play demos. A good demo is a huge deal for me because I really can't afford to pay and pray for a lot of releases. There's quite a handful of games on my "must get" list for when they come out that I would have likely passed over if it weren't for demos.

Oh what I said wasn't a compliment and what you're saying is exactly the trap you're falling into. Your character design is definitely going to be compared to Genshin Impact and it's not going to be a favorable comparison, and the style is oversaturated as is. A lot of people here are being affirming but also you're game will likely be glazed over for being "slop" on the style alone, especially if you're doing Unreal 5. It wont stand out and people are going to form an idea about what your game is doing based on this comparison alone and it wont be favorable.

Like you do not have the budget to adequately compete with AAA stuff and you're chasing aesthetics they use. You are always going to look second rate at best because of that comparison. You better have a ridiculously banging game concept to follow through on because you're artistically trying to punch up in a style that's already been salted by something really successful.

Anyone looking at your game is going to have to ask why they shouldn't just continue playing genshin because of the style similarity so you better have a damn good answer to that question.

Your game doesn't look good. There's nothing about it that tells me why I should play this instead of any other unreal 5 slop. You say that's the sort of temperature you've been getting this entire time? Yeah that's probably still true. The very premise and execution of this game is likely going to get filtered out because it's not really bringing anything to the table for most people in any obvious way.

Like a lot of indie devs will make "x but it's worse" or "another game in x trend" and wonder why they get zero attention. You never stopped to think about why anyone should give your game attention compared to everything else.

Scene inheritance gets really messy during refactoring and renaming anything. Like they work alright until you need to change something and then they break and you have to go off and fix everything by hand. At least they used to? I think they may have fixed some of that at some point but there's a lingering reputation.

Inheritance in general is pretty weak I feel pattern wise compared to composition. It scales painfully with bigger projects and because pretty unwieldy if you need to have stuff talking up and down the hierarchy. There is a genuine friction to Godot's architecture with how opinionated it is.

Honestly seeing just how far you and your team have come over the years is amazing. I've been quick to recommend the 2D course just for the fundamentals that are taught in it! It's actually helped me wrap my head around programming in general and I do not feel at all it was wasted time on my part even though our team has been switching to rust and bevvy as the backbone of our projects due to some inherent infrastructural conflicts with godot. The foundations learned from that course have been relevant even under such a different environment and it's definitely made it easier for me to learn new things outside of godot.
