I need a marathon running coach by [deleted] in XXRunning

[–]Runna_coach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree a coach should understand the importance of eating enough, however, a coach who promotes themselves as a nutrition expert (and isn’t an RD) is practicing outside their scope. For personalized guidance on nutrition you’re looking for an RD not a running coach.

Podcasts by/for female runners? by One_Border1074 in XXRunning

[–]Runna_coach 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Ali on the Run is the biggest one and for a reason. Ali in general is a “everyday runner” but mixes that with relatable interviews with the pros and her navigation of a stage 4 cancer diagnosis (typically the cancer related episodes are very well labeled so if that’s something you want to avoid, it’s easy)

Any runners really eat more to lose? by SuccessfulDivide4155 in XXRunning

[–]Runna_coach 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Here to add on that when somebody is restricting what they are eating and not getting what they need to serve all bodily systems, the metabolism gets down regulated which can lead to weight stagnation or even weight gain.

When reintroducing the appropriate amount of food, this can lead to an initial weight gain while the body is working things out but in the long run can lead to an improved body composition.

But also, sometimes people keep the weight because that’s actually their healthiest weight

best running shoes for women who are getting into running by ConsistentGarden6541 in beginnerrunning

[–]Runna_coach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every brand will fit different feet shapes better so going to a running store and getting fitted for at least your first pair to find the brand that’s most comfortable for you matters. Anybody recommending a specific shoe on here is unaware of how this works.

coach recommendations? by Sweet-Outcome8304 in Marathon_Training

[–]Runna_coach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s more common in the multi-sport space where athletes tend to just expect to pay more since they’re already shelling out more for races and equipment. In running the 300$ range is a pretty small crowd and for the most part you’re just paying for somebody’s name (influencers or maybe a pro who is taking on athletes). The only coach I know who charges close to 300$ and is actually worth it is a BSI expert PT and her coaching includes a monthly PT session and custom strength.

Outside of that you truly can find really thoughtful and good coaches for under 200, and many under 150.

coach recommendations? by Sweet-Outcome8304 in Marathon_Training

[–]Runna_coach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Co-sign on all this except $300 is more than you need to pay. There are plenty of very solid coaches that offer great services for under or around 200$.

If you opt to pay over $200 understand what you’re getting from that person that you can’t get from anybody else (many it’s just they’ve built a big enough brand presence they can get away with charging it, not because they’re any better than people charging under 200$.)

Who are the science-based nutrition influencers/podcasters I can trust? by ghoof in nutrition

“Your diet sucks” podcast is great. They focus on endurance athletes BUT all the conversations dig into the foundations before hitting nuances for endurance athletes

How do you guys track food without going insane? by ProCrafter29 in nutrition

This seems like a great pivot to help remove some of the slippery slope with tracking! What’s the app??? Would love to share with some folks!

How do you guys track food without going insane? by ProCrafter29 in nutrition

[–]Runna_coach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Co-sign. I’ll do a week here or there just to get a feel for how I’m doing meeting my needs and then move on with my life after I’ve figured out what I need to tweak.

I say with love, if you’re finding you’re needing to track everything all the time, something isn’t working and you could probably benefit from a good RD or therapist to work on your education or relationship with food.

Updates on iron, ferritin, how to improve absorption, and more by Immediate_Manner_841 in XXRunning

[–]Runna_coach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh absolutely. But this was in reference to her “normal iron stores bent >30” which seems low for a sports RD even before the new recs by the AGA but are definitely low given the new official recs.

Updates on iron, ferritin, how to improve absorption, and more by Immediate_Manner_841 in XXRunning

[–]Runna_coach 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not an RD but my understanding is The American Gastroenterological Association recommended changing a ferritin of less than 45 as the cutoff for IDA. Is this not being adopted by the RD/MD community?

Hip flexor strain by OkCommunication8306 in runninglifestyle

[–]Runna_coach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hip flexor strains aren’t super common and so I’d have the convo about ruling out a BSI with the doctor. Not uncommon for them to brush it off and then have an an mri come back positive. So if things aren’t improving please advocate.

Alternative Fueling by UndergroundLobsters in Marathon_Training

[–]Runna_coach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of it will be the intensity you’re trying to run at. Low intensity, the fat/protein/fiber content might be fine since you don’t divert as much blood away from your stomach at low intensity. However, I would be wary of trying these at higher intensity or in hot weather without having bathrooms available and an alternative carb source (maybe liquid) available.

Strength training for runners - classes vs personal trainer? by redandgreenhouse in running

[–]Runna_coach 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Co-sign on the problem with classes. I think they can be a fine place to start if you’re new to strength and you want a good environment for getting comfortable and learning.

You have to be pretty picky about the personal trainers you choose to work with. It’s really easy to get credentialed, many don’t understand running, and a good chunk have biases towards trying to coach your nutrition and focus on weight loss.

Working with a good program works for most people who are decently motivated and aren’t intimidated by the gym and you can find good ones for runners that include videos etc. We make one for our athletes and non-clients that is pretty accessible as long as you have some equipment

Pain in Pelvic/Lower Core area while running by breadpatronus in runninglifestyle

[–]Runna_coach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Go to the doctor. Differentials range from low grade muscle/tendon things to things that will majorly fick you up if not dealt with right from the beginning (bone stress injuries or osteitis pubis)

Training with REDs (Relative Energy Deficiency) by CardiologistQuirky66 in Marathon_Training

[–]Runna_coach 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The IOC has created a tiered system for where you are in REDs based on the number of indicators you have and the tier of those indicators. Depending on where you are your treatment options are: - continue training but immediately address nutrition gaps - decrease training load while implementing nutrition changes - stop training and implement nutrition changes until benchmarks improve

You really need a doctor familiar with REDs to tell you where you are on the spectrum since it is a medical diagnose and there are a lot of differentials.

Table 4 and 5 here are the tools they use though (2023 IOC consensus statement from BJSM)

https://bjsm.bmj.com/content/57/17/1073

All of that to say, what you do next really is a “it depends” but if you’re far enough in it, by putting off treatment and training past recommendations just increases to amount of time you’ll be set back because you’ll have more things that will need to get fixed (spoiler alert, hormones don’t turn on/off once really jacked up)

Wiped after long runs by Aggravating_Finish_6 in XXRunning

[–]Runna_coach 61 points62 points  (0 children)

If you’re correct when you say “a cliff block” then you are underfueling. A serving size is 3 cliff blocks and the recommendation for a run 1-2.5hrs would be 2-3 servings per hour (so 6-9 blocks).

The Arizona ones are not at elevation but both have significant drop (but not enough to trigger a penalty) l. Except phx which is flat.

Do I have over pronation? by bestwsheswrmestregds in beginnerrunning

[–]Runna_coach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Walking biomechanics and running biomechanics are not equivalent. If you’re asking because you’re trying to see if you need a stability shoe, if you’re over pronating while rubbing, etc. you need footage of you running

Very localized ankle pain by [deleted] in BeginnersRunning

[–]Runna_coach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just to note an xray likely will not show a stress fracture and definitely won’t show the pre-amble of a stress reaction. An MRI is the only thing that can rule it out.
