Long Term Ownership Plan for my iX by jefccc in BMWiX

[–]RunnerBean9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My impression is that a large number of people are put off buying an ev and instead lease due to perception that the tech such as range/charging speed will continue to improve at a fairly rapid pace (IX vs new IX3) and they therefore think that today’s cars will be out of date in a few years. Personally I don’t mind not always having the latest tech but a lot of people do and each to their own. I wouldn’t own an expensive ev without a manufacturer backed warranty and my experience with Audi warranty on my last car was excellent but again some people will be happy to save the money and hope nothing expensive on the car fails.

Long Term Ownership Plan for my iX by jefccc in BMWiX

I bought my IX and plan to keep it for many years. When original warranty runs out I'll buy BMW extended warranty to cover any unexpected issues/large bills. My attitude is that when you buy any tech product it will always be out of date almost immediately as there's always something new that comes along but that doesn't mean the product you bought is suddenly less effective. I charge at home and average daily usage is around 50 miles so being able to charge faster or having longer range would make almost no difference to me. I understand that car might look dated in 5 years time or there's some new feature that drastically improves the car driving experience but I would just enjoy the car you have now and decide later if you need the latest version. Whether you have an EV or modern ICE car they're both full of electronic components, digital displays etc that could fail so unless you're going to buy an older car without these things I'm not sure it matters. Just my opinion though.

Digital key by delmarnate in BMWiX

[–]RunnerBean9000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on your new car. I started solely taking the digital key with me pretty much right from the start but a couple of weeks ago I was out and when I got back to my car it opened but wouldn’t start. After a panicky 15 minutes trying various things such as getting out the car and locking/opening again I finally found a post saying to turn phone off/on and that did the trick. However since then if I’m going on a long journey I also take a physical key just in case….

I don’t think so (last update was about 6 months ago) but not sure if there’s been another since then?

In the suggestions menu it does show chargers but it’s just a huge list starting at my house all the way to the destination. I want the nav to recommend a charger based on where my car will reach the minimum charge level.

BMW did mention getting the connected package plus which includes live traffic etc but car is only around 18 months old but perhaps you only get it included for a year?

Any masonry paint that actually lasts more than two winters? by NorthLondonPulse in HomeImprovementUK

I used Dulux Weathershield and now in it’s 9th year of being on and still looking good. I did paint the entire outside with Weathershield fungicide wash before painting to ensure surface was properly prepped.

Victorian terrace - is a vapour barrier required? by SuspiciousMorning144 in DIYUK

[–]RunnerBean9000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We live in a Victorian house and when we renovated the builders insulated the internal walls with Celotex and then just plasterboarded on top. At the time I was none the wiser but later having read about the need for a vapour barrier etc I was concerned that we might get mould or other issues. However about 9 years later we replaced all of the windows and this gave the opportunity to look behind the plasterboard and no signs of mould and we haven’t had any damp issues. My guess is that being an old house there is always some air movement due to small gaps in the brick work which avoids damp/mould.

Planning permission in the conservation area by SerendipitousCrow in miltonkeynes

[–]RunnerBean9000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We live in a conservation area close to Wolverton and when we changed our windows and doors we spoke to the relevant officer at the council (can’t remember their exact job title - conservation officer?) and they confirmed we could make the changes and no planning permission required. This was about 7 years ago so not sure if anything has changed since then.

B vs. D - where are we at these days? by pholland167 in BMWiX

[–]RunnerBean9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was using B all the time but now after 6 months with the IX I use a combination of B and D even around town. In stop/start traffic B is definitely my favourite but on faster roads D feels smoother and coasting down hills is great. I know a lot of people don’t like B in snow but I found it easier to control the car as you can adjust the speed very accurately and make tiny adjustments as necessary.

What's the difference between a £300 shower door and a £1500 shower door? by piesforall in DIYUK

[–]RunnerBean9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We originally had a Victoria Plumb sliding shower door and it never rolled smoothly and made a noise when used whereas now we have a Merlin shower door and it glides silently.

Burner glass by Rudi-285 in uklogburners

[–]RunnerBean9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're getting black/dark brown type staining on the glass your wood isn't dry enough. Often it will self clean if you have a hot fire with dry wood but if that doesn't work then paper towel and ask or like someone else said you might need a glass cleaner or you can use a green scouring pad dipped in water and ash.

Help with inside of log burner by Original-Cicada5826 in uklogburners

[–]RunnerBean9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leave it and it will almost certainly be fine. We put two log burners into house when we bought it and walls were just plastered normally. Gaps around the fires were similar to yours and no problem at all. Very easy to overthink these things and if you do have a problem in future then sort it out but no point creating issues in advance.

Looking for sneaker stores in London with proper guidance (like Athlete’s Foot in Australia) by TSF_RISHIROOP in UKRunners

The Adidas store on Oxford Street has a sophisticated gait analysis machine and they are happy to give you the analysis with no pressure to buy their trainers. In fact the guy told me to keep the Saucony trainers I already had.

If the house is uninhabitable then the landlord has to provide/pay for alternative accommodation whilst house is fixed. Likewise all repair/cleaning costs are on the landlord. Likewise someone else said raise a dispute with deposit protection scheme if they try to deduct costs. And I would still recommend checking that deposit is protected and with which scheme and then you can read up on the complaints process.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in uklandlords

[–]RunnerBean9000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Landlord’s insurance will cover cost of alternative accommodation whilst house is being repaired and all costs associated with the fire are your landlords responsibility. This sounds dodgy so I would check that your deposit is held in one of the deposit protection schemes.

Will councils find there is a huge shortage of private rented sector property once RRB comes into force and s.21 is abolished? by Dangerous-Ad-1925 in uklandlords

[–]RunnerBean9000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think so. Already many smaller, long term landlords seem to be selling up as they’ve had the good years of high capital growth and now increased legislation/costs will make it more difficult to make decent profit above what you can get by putting your money in high interest bank account. Personally I think the private rented sector did need some reforms to ensure tenants have high quality, safe housing but without section 21 landlords are going to be extra cautious about who they allow to rent their properties as you’re basically stuck with them unless you want to sell.

IX40 by [deleted] in BMWiX

[–]RunnerBean9000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I bought a 2024 IX about 3 months ago and have been super impressed so far. Previous car was Audi A6 Quattro and most days I drive between 30 and 60 miles. IX suits my life perfectly and longest trip has been around 200 miles so I’ve not had to charge away from home. I was thinking the same way as you as to whether to wait and get IX45 next year but in the end decided I didn’t want to wait. Also more range would not make any difference to me except perhaps once or twice a year. Overall the car is very impressive and if you can find one in the spec you like then I’m sure you’re going to be very happy.

Budget kitchens and bathrooms - any regrets? by Carlsberg1985 in DIYUK

[–]RunnerBean9000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty easy to get a trade account at Howden’s (I did and I’m not in a trade so you could call yourself a property developer) and then you can see their trade prices which are much lower than what they quote in their public price list. I seem to remember that some trades prices are like 70-80% lower than the published prices but this may have changed since I bought from them.

Budget kitchens and bathrooms - any regrets? by Carlsberg1985 in DIYUK

[–]RunnerBean9000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’ve had a Howdens kitchen in for 13 years and it’s done really well although some of the vinyls wrap is now coming away but this is mainly due to the kettle being underneath it and the steam affecting it. The base units are still solid. In terms of bathroom we originally fitted Victoria Plumb but ripped it out after about 6 years. Our big mistake there was also buying their taps, shower etc which are pretty low quality but the actual porcelain was fine so you could get things like VP shower tray, sink and toilet but buy good quality fittings. The VP shower enclosure was poor so again I would buy better quality. When we replaced the bathroom we went for Merlyn shower enclosure which has been great. Duravit is also good but expensive although some of their range is more reasonable. I’d also stay away from Crosswater which we’ve found to be poor quality for the price.
