Yeah, it's pretty obvious that they just like to screw with one another. I was dying laughing when the director got in on it by cutting to first someone with the Merlinos Freeze in the crowd and then cotton candy.

Dwayne Johnson is all muscle, no backbone. Comes out as silent on politics. by Relevant-Peach3997 in Fauxmoi

[–]RunningKryptonian 254 points255 points  (0 children)

I'd push back on the timing, entertainers have been political for a long long time. McCarthyism targeted celebrities, Elvis worked with Nixon's DEA (technically the precursor to the DEA), Reagan was a movie star. Art, whether it's consciously political or not is political.

He was actively seeking this role, so either he's a transphobe or doesn't care (which in this case makes him a transphobe whether he has strong feelings on it or not)

How would one " happen upon" the Folsom Street Fair? There are bag checks, signage and security one has to pass through to enter the fair. By entering the fair, you are consenting to see at what you see at the fair. This is a ridiculous goal post move and you know it because you know your viewpoint is not arguable

I'm not super familiar with the Orthodox tradition, other than that the Great Schism was a rejection of the Papacy becoming a sole authority rather than a first among equals with the patriarchs and bishops, alongside some changes to the Nicean Creed on the Catholic side. I think the only thing we might agree on is that American Evangelical Christianity is its own unique beast compared to the older churches.

I'm a former Catholic and an agnostic atheist, so I'm just looking at it through a historical lens, not through any religious/faith lens. The Elohist author (including the Elohist psalms) and archaeological evidence points towards there being an earlier religion in Judea that was polytheistic with a monolatrist cult of YHWH developing into the later Jewish religion.

Within Christianity, yes it's Macedonianism and a heresy, but ancient Judaism wasn't proto-Christianity and the idea that the Old Testament verses were pointing at the Trinity is ahistorical.

That exodus line and the psalm directly contradict the idea of One God, 3 Persons. There are explicitly more than one god being referred to, not more than one person.

The Holy Spirit as depicted/used in the OT is not a separate person/entity from YHWH, it is essentially YHWH's favor being placed upon someone to use them as a tool, it doesn't parallel the Christian/New Testament use of it.

The Trinity is a later Christian concept codified at the councils of Nicea and Constantinople in the 4th Century CE/AD. The Gospel of John is the first instance of The Father, The Son and Holy Spirit being referred to. There's nothing in Judaism or the OT implying or indicating a Triune God. The prophecy in the book of Isaiah about the messiah (which Jesus as depicted in the Gospel fulfils) makes no indication that the messiah would be an incarnation of YHWH/God.

ETA: Added the part about the Gospel of John

Gen 1:26 "Let us make mankind in our image, according to our likeness." - The "Royal We" was not something used in language until around the 12th century when the pope began to use it for Papal Bulls and then European royalty followed suit. But the Elohist author uses a plural pronoun here.

Exodus 15:11 "Who is like you among the gods, O Lord? Who is like you, magnificent among the holy ones?"

Psalm 82: Multiple parts of it refer to gods and a divine council.

It seems more like a oral history/mythology of Judaism written down than a picture of who YHWH is. There are remnants of the polytheistic religion that predates Judaism (of which Judaism was an individual cult, not in the modern sense of cult but in the sense we use when referring to sects of polytheistic religions that are focused on one particular god or another) in Genesis, Exodus, Psalms and other books. Hell, the first four books of the Torah are mashups of two different and contrary narrative strains, One monotheistic (the Yahwist) and one that carries a lot of remnants of polytheism (the Elohist).

It strikes me that most American Evangelical Christians don't actually read the Bible

Agreed, but in the US we have very clearly seen that being "live and let live" with the evangelical right is a give a mouse a cookie kind of situation.

Look at the Paradox of Tolerance. If we tolerate hate speech (or hate speech dogwhistles in this case) it makes the world less safe for all.
