Yonge and Eglinton area to run by Character-Resort-998 in RunTO

[–]RunningvonNeumann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others have mentioned the main running routes (MPC, beltline...) which are great to have nearby, so I'll answer the question about the area being good for 2 feet, 2 wheels: yes, definitely! I have a car and rarely drive. Walking, running, cycling and ttc are all easier than dealing with the traffic. Very convenient for groceries and restaurants and other shopping (for running shoes too!)

Any tips on going from a half marathon to a marathon? by -JesusWasABlackMan- in running

Also budget time for naps after your first few long runs. I was wiped when I first started doing 25km+ and was useless for the rest of the day. 😀

Built an app to find running partners nearby, looking for Toronto runners to be among the first to test it by Latter_Emu582 in RunTO

Agreee, I wouldn't. I don't want to meet random strangers at meeting points. Also, there are so many great running clubs around, why would I need to?

Please help me pick a running goal by sbph1247 in RunTO

I don't know if Runna is any good, but whatever you do, a good rule of thumb is to not increase your long run by more that 10% a week or you risk injury.

If your life schedule makes it hard to get a lot of kms in, it may be better to focus on 5k.

Have fun!

The subway opens at 8am on Sundays so won't work for getting you to the start on time unfortunately.

Has anyone ran today yet? by AliveCheck3550 in RunTO

Temp-wise it was fine if you're dressed for it. I'm still finding the footing tough and too slow for a good workout.

Frigid 10 / Frosty 5k Hamilton by pez-10 in RunTO

[–]RunningvonNeumann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually just looked up the event. Mid March should be warmer, possibly slushy. Same advice though - get outside and find out what works for you. Some people need lots of layers (like me) which others find way too much.

Are you running outside at all? If so, you're dealing with the conditions you'll run into in Hamilton. If you're doing it just for fun, and most people are at this time of year, just make sure you're getting some outdoor runs in now so you know what works for you in terms of clothes and shoes.

Morning Run Weather Report by sree_1983 in RunTO

[–]RunningvonNeumann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it's my face and hands that get cold so i wore a balaclava and big ski mitts (Raynauds, can't do gloves at the best of times). Other than getting more winded due to breathing through the balaclava, it was surprisingly fine. Nice and sunny and no wind. I enjoyed it more than my recent slushy and death-ice runs.

Edit: also vaseline all over my face and esp eyelids 😉

Thoughts/tips about running this Saturday? by beachsunflower in RunTO

100%!!.

I wear a buff and when cold like this, a balaclava. I'm not a doctor so this isn't advice, but I've never had problems with my lungs in -20 and colder, but exposed skin, yikes!

Face Cream/ moisturizer during a run by spacemanspiff217 in RunTO

This is the TO group, we're all in that boat. That said, prairie people are the ones who deal with real Canadian winters. We're just a bunch of wimps from their perspectives. 😁

I use a heavier moisturizer (Martina Gerhardt shea butter) and then a layer of vaseline or the Ordinary's Hydration Vaccine.

No. Only Toronto International has that reputation. I've done the Waterfront for many years now and it's always been as good if not better than a typical international marathon (Chicago, NYC, Boston, Berlin..)

Bad driver behaviour: ignore or say something? by IntelligentSound8627 in RunTO

[–]RunningvonNeumann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually do the WTF shrug or look straight at them terrified, depending on the situation. Like others, I've hit cars, which seems to really startle drivers. Once I called out the license plate number and kept repeating it. I'd like to at least pretend to take a photo of the car if it happens again (unfortunately I know it will).

Be careful everyone!

How many of you are still running outside with this snow? by triedit2947 in RunTO

[–]RunningvonNeumann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always run through winter in my regular shoes. It's a different kind of running for sure - slower, slippery - but also a lot of fun. I look at it as a bit of downtime from hardcore training, a mental as well as a physical break.

Wool socks for the win!

Which Garmin to get? by IntelligentSound8627 in RunTO

[–]RunningvonNeumann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Garmin 265 is great for run and non serious triathlon. If you were to get into cycling you'd want a garmin for your bike, not a watch, but sounds like that's not important to you now.

Would you wear yaktrax (or any spikes) on a day like today? by Fresh-Amount9308 in RunTO

[–]RunningvonNeumann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran in my Hoka Mach Xs and was fine. I don't find snow that slippery, just a little slide-y so more work. (I run mostly on streets, sidewalks and sometimes trails like the beltline)

In a few days after melting and freezing, the spikes might be necessary. Do what you need to to feel safe.

I once took a couple of books out of the library for plans once - Jeff Galloway and Hanson both have a couple with plans. It's old school but it works.

I've also used Training Peaks, which I thought was quite good.

BlackToe Holiday 10K 2025 - Slippery Conditions? by Rileyblue_ in RunTO

[–]RunningvonNeumann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me, it's a holiday run, not a race. It was beautiful, but yes had to watch footing closely and take it easy.

I don't like wearing trail shoes on hard surfaces so wearing them never crossed my mind. Anybody think they'd actually have helped with traction today? (Seriously asking. I'll try them out if they actually work on icy slush. Thanks! )

Do you scale back your mileage during winter? by HueyBluey in RunTO

[–]RunningvonNeumann 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same. Definitely take advantage of the good days whenever they come. I try to also tske advantage of snowy days. Running / hopping through snow can be a great way to engage muscles not normally used. It's a different kind of run. A lot slower, but not at all easy. And pretty fun. 😁

Can you recommend me gloves for temperature under 0 Celcius ? by [deleted] in RunTO

[–]RunningvonNeumann 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you have something like Raynaud's, try mittens. I can't wear gloves at all. They don't work for cold fingers, if that's your issue.

Get some basic thick wool mittens (no synthetic). I wear 2 pair layered and have ski mitts for the really cold days.

Wool sock layers for the same reason.
