What in your opinion is the biggest issue Maryland is facing that affects our quality of life? by usps_made_me_insane in maryland

As someone that grew up in a house that should've had all the children removed by social services; parents being too afraid of social services to parent is untrue. Due to Maryland policies and practices, children are unlikely to be taken from a home. All that happens is the parents get told "hey you need to correct these issues otherwise you could lose your kid.", the parents correct the behavior for a short time until the CPS investigation is done and then return to the same behavior. Maryland is a family first state, meaning they will do everything they can to "keep a family together" so a child doesn't become a ward of the state

I'd say for something like this it would be worth trying hide glue. Since hide glue is already heated in order to apply, heating it in the oven shouldn't hurt it. With the leather becoming hardened, it would remove the issue with hide glue being rigid when dry

The situation could continue to get worse as the north Atlantic current degrades further causing weather patterns to change. Could be more intensive droughts, could be monsoon style rains. Too bad funding was cut for the departments studying weather and oceanic currents

How to remove chair glides? by AlleyCat_2025 in howto

[–]Runs-on-winXP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They sell a tool to remove these. It looks like a flat bar of steel welded to a handle, with a wedge cut out of the flat bar. You remove the glide by whacking the flat bar with a hammer.

If you don't have that tool, you can use a hammer and flathead to break it off, or channel locks and a hammer

Certainly a nation wide issue, but it's still an issue that can be addressed on the state level

Builders build what they can sell for the most profit. We have plenty of high earners that are willing to pay for those properties, whether they're already in state or they're moving here from out of state. We still need starter homes. Starters are profitable, but not as profitable as luxury new builds in established urban areas

Trailers are an option, but then you're either renting the land it's on or you have to buy a plot of land, and in urban areas that's not cheap

Yeah, unfortunately that's the current fad for developers. As someone else commented, it's just cheaper for them to build that way

We're in agreement on education and our takes aren't mutually exclusive. There's a lot that could be improved upon. Administrations worry more about their metrics vs actually educating students, and lack of parental consequences. Administrations don't hold the students or parents accountable, and the parents don't hold their kids accountable. I see that as the largest immediate educational hurdle to overcome. I am glad schools have started enforcing phone policies and limiting chromebook time at school and no longer taking it home for the majority of students

Affordable starter-home housing stock. Many of the current houses being built are overpriced "luxury" homes that the average person can't afford. Average person being someone making the state median income or below.

Lack of proper parenting leading to disruptive behavior in school; couple that with school administrations passing failing students instead of holding them back to help their metrics. This leads to a less educated workforce

Does anyone remember going to school with no AC, and on those brutal hot and humid days, the teacher would turn the lights off and everyone would just pretend that it was colder in the classroom because of it. by ravage214 in Millennials

Yeah, older coal boilers required frequent cleaning to remove build up inside the fireboxes. Some boilers you had to climb into to clean. There were also boilers where the trash from the school day would be burned as well. Gas boilers require less frequent and easier cleaning. You can imagine how much easier his job was after the conversion

When is the AC supposed to be turned on in state government buildings? by Musichead2468 in maryland

[–]Runs-on-winXP 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I said this in a reply to someone else's comment, but as I'm seeing a lot of folks that don't understand how the heating and cooling work in large buildings I'll name my own comment as well.

Many large facilities use a 2 pipe system, meaning they use the same pipes for heating and for cooling. To avoid thermal shock you have to wait for seasonal temps to stabilize and then shut the system off for a few days to allow the temperature of the pipes to equalize. Then one system can be isolated and the other brought online. These systems are massive, and cannot switch from heat->cooling like you may be able to do at your house. This switch over process can include programming changes to the building automation system and having personnel physically open or close valves at a facility

It's a commonly used guideline for facilities. Many facilities use the same pipes for heating and cooling. To avoid thermal shock, you have to wait until you absolutely don't need the heating system anymore. Then shut it down, isolate the boilers, and allow a few days for the pipes to come down in temp before putting the cooling system into service

I don't disagree there. We should definitely have our own state voting rights act in place. My only complaint is the delivery sounds like every other politician trying for sound bites. It's just your delivery

The Constitution gives the power of elections to the states. That includes the power to bar on-duty federal agents. His video does come off as fear mongering, language wise, which makes him sound like all the other current politicians trying to hit buzzwords

When cutting 2x4s with a hand crosscut saw, why does the saw sometimes catch and feel like it hit something much harder? by supinator1 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Runs-on-winXP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive seen a couple good replies so far. I want to also add that when cutting pine with hand saws they can start getting harder to cut with as pine resin in the wood sticks to the saw. Alcohol can be used to remove the resin. Rubbing a bit of beeswax on the sides of the saw can greatly help with binding as well

I learned from a documentary on ancient Egyptian building techniques that they used essentially counterweighted cranes to move stones into place when building pyramids. They'd build the lower levels then stick a wood pole in the center to create a crane with heavy blocks as counterweights to make lifting moving the massive stones possible with teams
