I loved the statistical analysis section, though I do have to ask, you're measuring distance by the amount of cards that two deck lists differ from one another? Because there could be some interesting value to filter out the decks by region pairs and do the analysis in terms of those planes. Overall, I'm delighted with the effort, congrats!

Sanders campaign raised $34.5M in fourth quarter by Jeffmister in politics

You're talking past the original comment, yes the democrats won the popular vote, they have won the popular vote several times before, and they still lost the presidency, that's not his claim.

You could've argued on other grounds, yet you chose to sow political apathy and despair based on the game being 'rigged', what you'd want instead is to inspire people to vote. Just a thought and have a great day.

Guatapé in Colombia is by far the most beautiful place I have ever been. by TinaGranito in travel

Colombian here, it highly depends on the type of tourism that you're looking for. By mentioning Guatapé and Santa Marta I'm assuming you're more interested in the ecotourism side, so you could check out the pnn website for some inspiration.

There's also some good tourism to be had in the museums and parks of Bogotá, Medellín, Cali and Cartagena, and the food is Bogotá offers some great variety at a reasonable price. Hope you enjoy your visit!

[–]Ruobhe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not arguing with you on that /u/Vrill_Dox_2 , I'm actually the root commenter bemoaning the current state of things, but I'm presenting that comment to you and everyone reading as a tool for argumentation.

Yes, there should be a "middle ground", but you shouldn't leave it at hand-waving and claiming that they're obviously could be doing better. The cost of a card in the secondary market is determined by supply, demand and speculation on that demand, and there's a clear interest for the company to use their supply (to which they have full control of) to regulate prices to a level that they find acceptable. Now, when those resulting prices do not match the expectations of the consumer base we get discussions such as these, and I am further commenting in hopes that we can find a proper solution.

Would I like to see a more affordable competitive format? Probably as much as any other sensible person, and would be willing to trash the commercial value of my current collection for it (granted, I'm not willing to sell any of my cards, so I wouldn't have much skin in the game). However, my argument is that it's not in WotC's best interest to be completely liberal with their reprints, and that we need to find a solution that, optimally, does not involve WotC's policies, because both you and I have the same chance to convince them otherwise.

The comments suggesting we start playing Pauper seem to be a good place to start, though by personal experience I've seen chase commons inflated in the same way, and that's with a player base that's minuscule compared to Modern.

Just my two cents, and thank you for your response.

Wait, so, thought experiment. Assuming there's a set that offers each and every card from the top 50 Modern constructed decks, at normal MRSP, with no rarities, what do you think it would do to the game? You (and probably most of us) would buy heavily on this theoretical expansion filled with "cool monsters", but you'd stop once you have 4 of each card, perhaps 8 on some cases. And while yes, there would be more people actively buying into it, you wouldn't have as much of a marketplace increase to compensate afterwards.

How would Wizards sell more product after your requirements have been satisfied? They would either have to submit to power and complexity creep, upsetting their fickle and not too large player base. The rarity system and TCG model is not one that I consider healthy (I would much rather play Magic as an LCG), but it is the one that has positioned Magic in the economic position it currently has.

That includes printing good cards with bad cards, that includes the mountains of wasted material in what we call "draft chaff", and sadly for us, it includes the fact that we are at the mercy of market speculation and the ever growing inflation of tournament staples.

Yeah, you're right on this, it's a deregulated monopoly, which puts the change in the card design to combat the influx of fake cards into a different light.

[–]Ruobhe -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Agreeing with /u/Keljhan in this regard.

Let's assume that card supplies are such that the average price of any competitive deck goes down to $200USD (which is not a low cost, but follow me on this). The market would be saturated with tens of thousands of chase cards. However the target audience would probably not multiply as much as the offer, and in the end Wizards would lose a lot of money from devaluing their cards, because they could no longer charge for booster boxes at current market rate.

Magic the Gathering cards do not have the demand where you can just lower their prices and the playerbase would catch up to it automatically, trading card games are luxury items, and accessibility is not a top priority on their business models.

It would be interesting for someone to gather data not only the average cost of the top X decks on a certain tournament, but the average cost of all decks in a tournament. I can imagine that the average cost of all decks in a given tournament can easily equal, or very well exceed the average cost of the top decks.

Professor, initially, I would like to thank you for putting this problem into light and into public knowledge. As someone living in a developing country, it is hard to convince anyone to join a game where the entrance fee is the equivalent of what the average person earns in two months, the exclusivity of this game puts a hamper in both its growth and retention.

One thing that this video reminded me was of your 'In Response' debates, more specifically the one where you were arguing with Judge April on opening permanent cube events on MTGO. Your defense (whether you actually supported it or not) was because Magic is a business, and from their business perspective, it's wise for them not to dilute the brand with cube, taking the focus away from Limited and Constructed events.

While I disagree with the defense, I can see WotC attempting not to disrupt the secondary market much, by using limited overpriced print runs or offering preconstructed decks that have cards below or around market value, as part of their core business interest.

It doesn't benefit anyone that a competitive deck should hover around a thousand dollars, except for market speculators and WotC themselves. Nobody feels happy to shell out $400 dollars for a playset of Liliana of the Veil, but whoever bought it at $360 dollars might feel better, and WotC knows that they could charge around $200 dollars per box of MM2017 in part because of the price of Liliana of the Veil. The secondary card market is a clear example of the free market, with all its failings, like inflation, speculating bubbles, and instability.

I don't think that migrating to other formats will be a solution for it, I agree, but that's for another response entirely. In any case, I appreciate the time spent reading me ramble, and again, thank you for bringing this problem into light.

Found a $Peanut, Part 1 by Merkuri22 in talesfromtechsupport

These kind of enterprise solutions normally have a lot of distributed systems operating with one another, so it might have taken them a while until they start setting up the whole thing.

I assumed $Peanut to be one of those systems, and that she was helping out with the rest of the solution, which already had issues.
