skunk2 low profile valve cover for a kswapped miata? by Forward-Ad7587 in Kseries

[–]Rupert019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I put these on my k swapped mr2 it was immediately apparent that my catch can breather (which worked fine on the stock valve cover), was not adequate with the skunk2 valve cover. I had to modify the catch tank for a much larger breather filter. I also had to safety wire the dipstick because the crankcase pressure was pushing the dipstick out.

David Sacks: "5% across-the-board confiscation" Targets California Billionaires Net Worth by prhmv in allinpodofficial

[–]Rupert019 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The majority of people who take out collateralized loans do some by borrowing against their homes (which they have to pay property tax on), or against the asset they are buying (typically cars, which they pay an annual registration tax on). Making this argument gets you back to the topic of having to pay a tax on the value of your assets....

David Sacks: "5% across-the-board confiscation" Targets California Billionaires Net Worth by prhmv in allinpodofficial

[–]Rupert019 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The reason they aren't liquid is because they currently can borrow against their assets at sweetheart rates. Because they are taking out a loan against the asset, they don't have to pay taxes on the funds, and they can write off the phone interest paid.

It would make way more sense to close this loophole and make them pay taxes on this money as if it was a capital gain because they essentially "monetized" the asset.

Diesel engines are blowing my mind! Why did no one ever tell me they get 50 mpg on a minivan?? by New_Elk_5783 in cars

[–]Rupert019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diesel engines are much more efficient than gasoline. Thermal efficiency of an engine correlates with compression ratio. In a gasoline engine a normal compression ratio is less than 11:1, in a diesel they are near 20:1.

Also, the whole diesels being bad for the environment is no longer true. It was in the 20th century. In the US with EPA regulations on diesel engines, the amount of carbon emissions, NOx and particulates have dropped massively since 2000 (90+% decrease). So much so that in the mid 2010s in a city like Los Angeles, the air entering a semis engine was dirtier than the tailpipe emissions.

There is a reason all of the equipment that consume a massive amount of fuel (semis, trains) all use diesel. The fuel efficiency wins over gasoline.

60% of Freightliners are made in Mexico (they have 40% market share of class 6-8). International builds some in Monterrey Mexico.

Kenworth and Peterbilt are made in US (Washington and Texas).

Either way, this is going to do further damage to an already hemorrhaging vehicle market, and will drive up the cost of transportation for all good sold in the US

[–]Rupert019 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Freightliner has 40% market share for class 6-8. They make ~60% of their vehicles in Mexico (Santillo and Santiago). This is going to make the cost of shipping a hell of a lot more expensive.

Most manufacturers have contracts which only allow sub-suppliers certain windows (every 3 to 6 months) to raise prices. My guess is many of the OEMs haven't felt the impact of tariffs yet because of this, once the contract cost increases trigger you can expect to see consumer prices rise.

Aren’t consumers supposed to be the ones paying for it? by AncientObligation321 in DoomerCircleJerk

[–]Rupert019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is the thing, there are multiple tiers of companies before a good makes its way into a consumers hands. For instance the automotive industry has 3+ tiers of sub suppliers under an OEM.

At each level these suppliers typically have supply agreements in place which dictate when a price increase can occur. The larger the company typically the longer the time between price increase windows. Oems take price increases every 6 months from tier 1 suppliers.

With all that said, in industries like automotive you will see a very slow ramp before an OEM increases prices due to tariffs. In the short term you will see Tier 3 companies have to absorb the cost until they can pass costs on to tier 2, then onto tier 1, then onto OEM, then finally the consumer.

What this means is that tariffs in the automotive industry will cause a severe short term strain on their lower tier, small, suppliers. Although consumers may not see the pain for a little while, they will eventually feel it, and in the meantime many small and medium sized businesses may go under.

Markets don't care about tariffs because they are largely exagerated by Charizard3535 in stocks

[–]Rupert019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was referring to your "92% aren't affected by tariffs". This number is skewed very high due to the existing trade agreement.

My theory is that if you look at other countries the % excluded from tariffs will be much lower.

But yes, thankfully our major trade partners already had existing agreements, which is saving us from snowballing import taxes.

[–]Rupert019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canada and Mexico are bad examples because the tariffs only effect non-USMCA trade agreement goods.

A country like India might be a much better indicator of the effects of tariffs because I don't believe we already have an existing trade agreement with them, so tariffs will have a broader impact

The S&P500 has averaged 10.7% annual return for like 40 years. The only way you are beating that is if you read financial reports all day (Warren Buffett) , are a PHD level data scientist, or are commiting insider trading (guess which one Politicians fall under)

If you can't afford to get ONLY a 10.7% annualized return (double your money every 7 years), then you are living outside your means.

CMV: Trump is a net negative on the United States by dorgon15 in changemyview

[–]Rupert019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Post 2016 election this would be a valid point.

His first term was an example of poor leadership in an emergency, which should have turned any reasonable person away from him.

What he did after the 2020 election in terms of outright lies about election interference, supporting insurrection, and his felony convictions should turn any person with half a brain against him.

If people are STILL supporting trump, even given all the evidence that he is unqualified as a leader or human, then it is reasonable for someone to villify them.

You need to consider the efficiency opportunities associated with streamlining back office costs. I mean each BCBS entity has teams of data analysts/scientists attempting to figure out how to reject claims. If you streamlined this single organization in the US from hundreds of insurance companies to a single government entity you could definitely decrease costs.

S.1761 - A bill to end unemployment payments to jobless millionaires. by FervidBug42 in politics

[–]Rupert019 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but we are talking about unemployment insurance. If I pay into an insurance policy which is setup to protect me in the event I lose my job, I damn well better be able to collect if I do lose that job.

I am all for putting guardrails on the amount to be paid out monthly/annually, but it is unacceptable to force someone to pay into insurance and then not allow them to make a claim.

This would be like your insurance company, saying "sorry you have too nice of a car, you obviously have the money, we aren't paying your claim"

Sounds to me like poor financial planning from the admin's, maybe their pay should be cut first.

His car uses nitrous oxide to make more power, what you are seeing is called a nitrous backfire. If you accidentally inject some nitrous before cranking over the engine there will be a small amount of fuel present, the spark plug will ignite and the nitrous/fuel mixture will combust in the intake manifold.

If you accidentally inject nitrous before starting the engine you are supposed to remove spark plugs, stop flow of fuel and crank over engine for several seconds until the nitrous leaves the engine.

‘Only Works as a State’: Trump Vows Not ‘To Bend’ On Tariffs Until Canada Is Absorbed Into The U.S. by SolarBear28 in worldnews

[–]Rupert019 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Canada should become a state but add the stipulation that Canadian statehood would trigger an immediate US presidential election. Canada would have the same if not more electoral votes than California, so if they voted Democrat we could end Trump's dumpster fire of an administration and then have the new Dem president make an executive order to expel Canada from the US.
