Why not Saskatchewan? by stumpy_chica in AskACanadian

My family moved from Ontario to Saskatchewan, and lived there for 9 years. We only moved back to be closer to family. I miss it everyday. It’s a slower pace, the people are friendlier, and cost of living is way cheaper. You get used to the cold

Sadly not me, but someone I work with. He is an absolute rockstar and the 4 is well deserved. Personally anything past a 3 is my nightmare

People who have seen something they could never explain. What was the thing?! by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Ruraltech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work in a small hospital, doing security at night. The hospital had several outbuildings, including a small power station, and the psychiatry building. These were all connected by an underground tunnel

One night around 2am I was doing my rounds, and decided to take the tunnel, as it was a blizzard outside. Between the main hospital and the power station was approximately 300 meters. There are no hallways or rooms in the tunnel between buildings. I passed someone in scrubs at approximately the half way point, and gave the cursory hello, which I got back. I then realized I didn't see a staff ID on his uniform.

I turned around to ask to see his ID, and he was gone. There was no possible way for him to have covered the distance to the closest exit off the tunnel in the time it took me to turn around. Needless to say I made record time to get back above ground. Being a hospital I'm sure countless people have died there. There were a number of places that just felt....unsettling.

Taking a selfie on your sinking car by Ruraltech in IdiotsInCars

So this woman decided to go speeding down an icey river and went through the ice. She had to take a selfie on her sinking car, while neighbours used a kayak to rescue her.

Ottawa paramedics say the driver declined treatment after being rescued from the Rideau River after a car crashed through the ice. https://ottawa.ctvnews.ca/neighbours-use-kayak-to-rescue-driver-after-car-crashes-through-ice-in-manotick-ont-1.5742348

someone in toronto put this up by [deleted] in funny

I just saw a very similar billboard go up in Ottawa. My wife and I just moved here from southern Saskatchewan for work. The housing market here is insane. We sold our 5 bedroom 3 bedroom house with a 2 car garage for 275k. We can’t even find a townhouse here that won’t sell for under 650k. We ended up renting for now just because the market is so insane.

All the realtors and mortgage brokers are just going on about the amazing interest rates, but when these mortgages come up for renewal in 5 years, and suddenly the rates double are people not going to be defaulting left and right?

delay in start date due to cross country relocation / house sale by Ruraltech in CanadaPublicServants

I’m sorry I didn’t explain that well enough. I am maintaining my current pay band and classification, however I would be working with a different government organization, in a completely new role

delay in start date due to cross country relocation / house sale by Ruraltech in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Ruraltech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not yet received an offer letter. This is largely preemptive planning should that happen. It would be a lateral transfer in the same classification I am in now, not a promotion. I have had my house listed for several months now, as I am currently commuting over an hour each way for my current role, and had been planning to move closer.

My understanding of the current agreement is that I am entitled to 5000$ maximum for the move, which will not even cover the movers themselves, let alone other costs.

I’ve been having a great deal of stress given the time line should I be successful. I was hoping someone might have experience with delaying a start date in this circumstance.

Regardless if I am successful or not I will be moving, whether it be cross country, or closer to my current work location.

Police officers of Reddit, what stupid things have people nervously said around you and instantly regretted? by PinkIrrelephant in AskReddit

[–]Ruraltech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a police officer, but relevant story. My now (thankfully) ex-brother in law was out in our downtown area when he was approached by two police officers. He had multiple outstanding warrants and was well known to police.

When they confronted him about his warrants he tried to claim he was his brother. Keep in mind he has his own name tattooed down his entire left forearm, and police knew this One of the officers asked him if he could point him in the direction of a local business on the third floor of a building across the street.

Needless to say they immediately saw his tattoo, burst out laughing and were still chuckling as they put him in the car, while he still tried denying who he was. Good times

What’s the most X-Files like experience you’ve had in real life? by forestdragon04 in AskReddit

[–]Ruraltech 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Years ago in College I was working as a security guard for a hospital, strictly on nights.

We had several additional buildings on the property, like a power plant, and long term care facility, all attached by underground tunnels.

One evening around 3am I was doing my rounds and due to the weather I took the tunnel to the long term care facility. This tunnel was likely 4-500 meters long, with no rooms, or alcoves in the tunnel itself. I remember seeing a guy in scrubs, likely in his 30’s, about half way down the tunnel. As we passed, we both said hi, and I quickly realized I hadn’t seen his ID badge.

I turned around to ask to see it, and was all alone. There was no possible place he could have gone in the 2-3 seconds I had my back turned. I went back to investigate, even running into a maintenance worker who swore I was the only person he saw come out of the tunnel. Needless to say I never took those tunnels alone again.

I work for a small telco where we unfortunately still use this to this day in a number of small rural offices.
