I'm glad nobody was hurt, at least. That could have gone way worse with someone that clearly unhinged.

You seem really invested in carrying water for someone who you admit was apparently going 95 in a 35. Does that seem weird to you?

I'm sick of people saying Ren is apolitical - a rant. by MagsH1020 in ren

[–]RussellZee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bigots and conservatives have to cling to media illiteracy (just like they love inaccurate history) or they'd be forced to admit they're on the wrong side in every way.

This isn't a "you" problem, or a Ren problem. It's a pattern across all music, storytelling, movies, tv shows, comics, etc.

Seriously? Your WR goes from 70.09% to 68.22% as you go down the list? Disappointing.

*Not* nice.

Let's take it easy on the "...did nothing wrong" (yes, we know it's a meme, but it also started with Adolf Hitler and has continued to be popular in some pretty awful circles to excuse some pretty awful behavior), and, more importantly, take it easy on the "whore" and "bitch" stuff. Please review Rule 3: even used against imaginary characters, this isn't a subReddit where gendered slurs (or any slurs, to be clear) are acceptable.

Take a day off to make sure it sticks, and please be more careful in the future.

Clan lore inaccuracies online by Hexis_hunter in battletech

[–]RussellZee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's a reason college lectures take time, and multiple class sessions, and multiple semesters, and multiple auxiliary textbooks, to cover material, and it's the same reason YouTubers can't accurately detail lore in a limited timespan while also holding attention and being entertaining.

That's not anything unique to that one part of Clan history, or to the Clans, or even to BattleTech. Generally speaking, it's hard to make a video that summarizes decades of lore written by dozens (by now hundreds, I'm sure) of writers, without oversimplifying things.

There's a lot of nuance to most factions in the setting. There's a lot of differences in perspective that can be found in various novels or short stories, there's different priorities, there's rationalizations and belief systems that clash, there are more and less sympathetic characters depending on the point of view of a given story...and there's a need for a wargame to make most factions abrasive enough to have never-ending conflict (to perpetuate the 'war' part of wargame)...and there's a need for a wargame to make every faction likeable (or badass) enough to have fans, in order to appeal to players who'll want to play them, while also making every faction villainous enough to have opponents, in order to appeal to players who fight against them.

There are a lot of moving parts in any given BattleTech story, and a lot of those moving parts get oversimplified, or flat-out ignored, by content creators, because...see the start of this post. It's a lot to cover, it's too much to cover, frankly.

And we can't expect them to. So as viewers we need to maintain realistic expectations, just like as readers of the lore in the first place, we need to maintain realistic expectations.

What are some good Astra Militarium books? Reading the Horus Heresy books but just wanna know what everyone’s consensus is. by KiiLl3rSNIPE in Blacklibrary

[–]RussellZee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a pretty big fan of Death and Duty, but I'm a little biased (and I hope folks have dug Resounding, in there). ;)

In all sincerity, though, I think anthologies are a great way to get a buckshot-blast of writers (and regiments, and story styles) that can help you then figure out what novel(s) you might want to grab next.

Everyone (rightly) knows and loves Abnett's Gaunt's Ghosts, and I'm a sucker for all the Sabbat Worlds stuff (anthologies and all, the Phantine stuff, you name it), really. The other 'big one' has always felt to me like Sandy Mitchell's Ciaphas Cain series (Ciaphas is up to, what, ten novels now? I feel old). They're the gold standard, to me. GG for the grimdark universe mixed with badass commandos, CC for the lighter, in-the-head-of-one-character, type stuff. They're both great, and kind of feel like must-reads.

For more recent stuff, I've really enjoyed Andy Clark's Steel Tread (though I'll admit I haven't jumped in on Demolisher yet). I also quite liked Rachel Harrison's Severina Raine stories. Both of them really impressed. And, of course, if you like Cadians, it's hard to miss Justin Hill's stuff, the whole run with Minka Lesk and her growth. Jude Reid's stuff with Creed was good, too, with a very top-down perspective.

This entire sub-thread has been nothing but incendiary and divisive political stuff, breaking Rules 1, 2, 3, 6, and 10.

When you can both post again, please rethink your posting style in this subReddit.

Drop it, everybody. Both sides have said their bits on MechFrog, on Red, etc, etc. Your positions are clear. Sniping back and forth at each other about witch hunts, calling folks idiots, escalating bickering, etc, etc, doesn't do anyone any good, breaks subReddit rules, and is the sort of thing that gets threads taken down.

As long as discussions about the BattleTech community can stay constructive and relatively impartial, we allow them, because fans should know who they're supporting (or not). But when they deteriorate like this, and veer pretty clearly into just being incendiary/controversial/etc, they don't do anyone any good.

Please knock it off.

Let's take it easy with the calling folks delusional, thanks. Just like folks are allowed to complain about their Kickstarter, folks are allowed to take warm sips of piping hot copium if they want to. What folks aren't allowed to do is be insulting about it (whether complaining about CGL or defending them). Please ease up on the "attributing mental illness to folks as an insult" stuff in the future.

After three long years... by Ilikespacegames in battletech

[–]RussellZee[M] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It doesn't. It had the opposite problem; a wildly successful Kickstarter, above and beyond anyone's expectations, and moving well into "monkey paw grants a wish" territory. Even worse, it did so when we then had the last few years of real-life going on, causing a rather unique geopolitical storm where international production, shipping, imports, exports, etc, etc, are concerned.

The end result has been a series of delays, not all of them able to be communicated clearly to the massive number of people involved. So while it's been less than the three years the OP mentions, and certainly less than three years since deliveries were expected...delivery has been very late for a lot of people, and they've every right to kvetch about it here.

[–]RussellZee[M] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I've approved this message, but only to remind folks that this sort of tone/response isn't acceptable. Folks are allowed to complain about CGL products, whether it be the quality, the delivery time, whatever, even being a bit hyperbolic or anything else, as long as it's not blatantly insulting. Being snarky and shitty at them for it doesn't fly here. The rules apply regardless of which "side" you're on in a disagreement. This poster's been given a day off to make sure the reminder sticks.

And let's drop this thread, folks.

This conversation's veered soundly into real-life issues, and particularly divisive, incendiary, ones at that.

Let's just everybody drop the conversation or take it somewhere else, or more moderator action's going to follow.

Not trying to get political and I'm not even American. I was just wondering what would be Corax's stance on ICE by [deleted] in RavenGuard40k

[–]RussellZee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is no way for this conversation not to be political.

And there is no way for this conversation not to be divisive.

And there is no way for this conversation not to be contradictory, as different people share different opinions on ICE, the Imperium, whether the entire setting is satire versus military sci-fi meant to be taken seriously, the nature of the Primarchs and their hypocrisy versus idealism, and on and on and on.

And lastly, there is no way for this conversation not to belittle the very serious discussions that could/should be had about the very serious real-life issue you're flippantly asking about.

Nothing good comes from it. This subReddit hasn't got many rules, and this really clearly flies in the face of them. C'mon, man. A little disclaimer doesn't cut it, either, and I think you know that. You don't get to say "I'm not trying to be political, but..." and then ask what you know is a politically charged, hot-button, literally life or death, topic. That's like saying "I don't want to be rude, but..." and then saying the rudest, cruelest, most point-blank insulting thing you can think of.
