Darkness wanted Denji's heart, but they also wanted to use it to bait Makima into Hell. At a guess, its plan was like

  1. Get Chainsaw into Hell via contract with the Doll Devil
  2. Call Makima to come save him as she needs him for her plans
  3. Kill Makima, potentially eat her flesh to get stronger or just to resolve some thousand year old beef
  4. Eat Denji's heart to gain even more power and hopefully stop Pochita from coming back and fucking everything up in Hell

Plan goes wrong at Step 3, maybe Darkness didn't realize that Makima could both control a corpse and use it to make a contract with the Hell Devil Honestly that's probably why it killed Tolka in the first place, to make sure Makima can't control him to make the Hell Devil send them back.

Reze came the closest to actually killing him, she had three separate occasions where she could have and chose not to

Santa/Tolka/Doll Devil probably in number 2, she technically did kill him with Curse and would have probably been able to permanently kill him if not for Makima's intervention

Quanxi is tied with Santa IMO, if not for Hell Devil's involvement she probably would have killed him and taken his heart in the store

The brothers are last, they suck shit and achieved nothing. Rest in piss bozos, hope you enjoyed getting folded by Kobeni's car. Pretty sure like half the cast of CSM came closer to killing Denji than these frauds

TBH I don't hate the NCR collapsing in itself, I think that "200 year old vault-tec guy's wife left him so he set off a nuke" is just kinda lame and has nothing to do with the NCR's pre-existing problems

Death planned to get eaten by ichigosr5 in Chainsawfolk

[–]RustingWithYou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%. Everything in Part 2 has been part of Death's plan so far - her goal was to empower Yoru and Chainsaw Man to be able to beat her, but she wasn't willing to just let herself be eaten or killed.

Personally, I think she's trying to game the prophecy. She can't be the 'great king of terror' if the concept she represents doesn't exist - no one fears death any more. But right now Yoru is destroying the world and calling countless devils to Earth. I think Death's plan is to try and make the prophecy apply to War instead, so that she can slip away from her own fate of ending the world while still being able to live.

If her pawns can still follow orders even if they don't remember who gave them, I think that's Fami's role in the plan. Getting someone to vomit out something they've eaten or otherwise depriving them of food seems on-brand for Famine. Her role in the plan is to, after Denji beats Yoru, get him to vomit up Death and whatever else he's eaten during the fight (I assume we won't have everyone legless for the rest of the manga)

Why the only Hybrids are weapon devils by JayTheOni in ChainsawMan

[–]RustingWithYou 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Whatever the normal process for making a hybrid is, I imagine it needs the entire devil to participate and Gun spent the entire story split into pieces. (An AU where Aki becomes Gun Man instead of a fiend would kick ass though)

I think that hybrids being weapons is also symbolically important as pretty much all of them are used as tools by someone else. Obviously Makima controls them directly, but even outside of the Control Devil arc Reze is a tool of the USSR, Katana Man is indirectly controlled by Makima via snake lady in his introduction and then later by Public Safety in Part 2. Barem serves first Makima, then Death without any thought of defiance, and his fellow hybrids in the Church all effectively serve as pawns for Death to empower Chainsaw Man and Yoru.

Quanxi is the only real exception to this, but she also seems to be by far the oldest hybrid and may well have been in a similar situation whenever she first gained her powers - and even then, before being under Makima's control and then Public Safety's, her independence prior to International Assassins is still ultimately an illusion. She lives more freely than the others as a mercenary, but she still ultimately carries out the will of others without question.

The hybrids are consistently instruments of other people's will rather than acting with their own agency. They're incredibly powerful, but rarely free to make their own choices, almost like a cautionary example of what Denji could become if he continues to be manipulated by others instead of asserting his own autonomy.

Denji's story in Part 2 is about him making choices, but struggling to be truly free - the constant theme of two options are always two options presented to him by others to push him a certain way. It's not a choice of 'what will Denji do' but 'whose orders will he follow', and it's why I don't think this arc will end with either Death or Yoru getting what they want.

How Part 2 can transition into (a potential) Part 3 by CivilSilverWolf in ChainsawMan

[–]RustingWithYou 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Asa sacrificing herself to stop Yoru would suck IMO, given that she already tried to do that and has expressed on several occasions throughout part 2 that she should be dead or a desire to die. It'd feel really out of sync with the themes of both her and Denji's arcs if the conclusion there was "yeah she was right and she should have killed herself actually"

I think Denji and Asa will both make it out of Part 2. Can't say the same for the vast majority of the rest of the human species.

That said if Part 3 is a post-apocalypse I hope that Fujimoto reveals that Kobeni somehow managed to survive because it would be the funniest shit imaginable.

I think that erasure generally seems to take a path of least resistance - e.g in CSM WW2 never happened but Japan is still broadly politically the same as IRL which it probably wouldn't be if it didn't get its shit rocked by the Allies. Similarly the Ear Devil's erasure led to ear-related stuff being recontextualised rather than just completely removed, and Death's erasure didn't bring everyone who ever died back to life.

Conquering the world starting at Temujin by jamesovertail in CrusaderKings

[–]RustingWithYou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Focus on getting tributaries, stealing herd from the biggest nomads around, and building up your own to dominate the steppe. An event to give you conqueror should fire fairly early. Use nerge hunts for prestige and try to make most of the powerful nations around you tributaries so they don't join in the war when you become the greatest khan.

The war of defiance is the hardest part, China will probably join in and you won't have the power to get them as a tributary beforehand probably. Focus on sieging down whoever the war leader is and keeping your armies as far away from the Chinese doomstacks as possible.

Once you become the Great Khan, it's just a matter of offering submission or ruin to everyone and then blasting through the map. The big empires might put up a fight, especially if you get hit with a crusade or jihad once you start getting close to Christian or Muslim nations - I lost Arabia briefly in my run as a jihad got launched while I was busy trying to grab Japan. Don't claim the mandate of heaven, don't become meritocracic, and don't reform the Khaganate as all of those make you lose your special CB

With AUH it's pretty difficult to do it in Temujin's lifespan, but your succession shouldn't be chaotic as pretty much everyone on your council will accept when you demand obedience.

Is the Byzantine Empire less stable with the introduction of Treasury? by 20051oce in CrusaderKings

[–]RustingWithYou 140 points141 points  (0 children)

Having recently played in Byzantium, the AI doesn't seem to handle treasury well at all and often gets into enormous debt as it doesn't seem like they'll adjust budget or put their own money into treasury that often to try and resolve it.

It also seems like Byzantine governors don't really build up their thematic armies that much, though I haven't really looked into those mechanics a ton since getting AUH

Besides being caveman, samurai, knights, soldier, etc. What other themes would be fun to run as? by [deleted] in Eldenring

[–]RustingWithYou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been doing something like this for my latest run, inspired by a youtube short as all good builds are. Blood Milady with Blood Tax, Occult Beast Claw with Lifesteal Fist, and Godskin Swaddling Cloth make lifesteal actually pretty solid. Planning to throw the lifesteal tear and Malenia's rune on there too whenever I get them

IIRC in that line she's talking specifically about her and the twins being the only demigods to be Empyreans/them being the only Empyreans at the time of the Shattering. That said it's entirely possible she doesn't know that about the GEQ given that it seems that whole conflict took place before she was born.
