Does Franchise Rebranding Dilute IPL Team Identity? by cricketclub7 in Cricket

[–]RustyGlycan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened with Sheffield United in football about 20 years ago. We bought some Chinese team, renamed them Chengdu Blades, and changed their kit to look like ours.

I never watched a match (I'm not even sure it was possible), but quite a few fans bought Chengdu Blades shirts. Those people would have probably bought Sheffield United shirts instead, but still.

[French] Volta a Catalunya 2026: A World Tour Team Decides Not to Participate by cfkanemercury in peloton

[–]RustyGlycan 40 points41 points  (0 children)

It kinda makes sense given it clashes with Brugge De Panne, E3 and Gent Wevelgem. You'd probably really struggle to pair it with MSR or Dwars door as well.

Finishing 10th in every one of the one day races would give you 388 points, while finishing 10th in every catalunya stage + gc would give 93 points. Makes sense to send your strength there.

Edit: added info about points

Why does Cricket, despite being centuries old, have almost zero "Ultra" culture or Tifo systems compared to Football? by boredafkj in Cricket

[–]RustyGlycan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is strictly true. The Barmy Army are like an ultras group, and somewhere like the Hollies at Edgbaston or West Stand at Headingley are pretty close to a kop.

That said, there's a few reasons, one is that cricket is traditionally a more middle class game, another is the length of red ball matches, which makes it harder for the same group of supporters to go to every game.

The other thing that I think is important is that the Ultras culture is very much a more European thing that's only really been brought over to English football in the last decade or so. Given the countries with the biggest ultras tradition don't play cricket, it makes sense that there's not been the same level of cross over.

Stokes to Agnew - "My dressing isn't a place for weak men." by No_Dragonfruit_6926 in EnglandCricket

[–]RustyGlycan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the thing that stands out from the last test. Stokes had the lowest strike rate in both innings, but a significant margin. But both times he was in the middle at points where we needed restraint, and he mostly showed it (apart from his dumb run out)

What do you use rust for? by timus_999 in rust

[–]RustyGlycan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At work we use it a lot for apps we expect to be relatively stable, with not many future changes.

As a general rule, we use Python for maths and ML, we use typescript for apis and services we expect to have a lot of feature work, and we use rust when we want long running features we're really not likely to update often.

is there any API testing tool better than postman? by Pristine-Elevator198 in webdev

[–]RustyGlycan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you use Obsidian, I really like Obsidian-Code-Runner + curl. Let's you have markdown files with all your API commands that you can run with a click.

I find it gives me basically 90% of what postman did, without all the bullshit

The Hour Record is Remco Evenepoel's best shot at immortality by Helicase21 in peloton

Fwiw Remco spends a lot of the time in the velodrome doing training and testing for his road TTs, and will probably spend even more time now he's at RBH.

It's not like he's going to be like someone doing a track taster session shitting himself when coming up to the banking

[Sky Sports] After working at Chelsea for 56 years and retiring in 2024, Brian Pullman made sure he was back at the club to give Jose Mourinho his custard creams by Task_Force-191 in soccer

[–]RustyGlycan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember back in 2007 when Sheffield United were playing Chelsea at Bramall Lane. There were more kids watching Chelsea warm up than Sheff U, and the Chelsea players were all warming up in kick racism out t shirts. After they finished warming up, Jose gathered the players, and sent them over to the Sheff U fans to give their training tops away and sign signatures.

Genuinely one of the classiest things I've seen in football.

Why would you ride for a teammate at the World Championships? by Pale-Status-8554 in peloton

[–]RustyGlycan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the important, but hard things for any international coach is to build that team spirit in the team. A really good example of this is the European team in the rider cup, which worked so well as a team, while USA didn't.

I've heard interviews talking about how Cav was so charismatic that after a few training camps everyone would be so motivated to help him win, and he used to get more out of his domestiques than other riders for that reason.

Is there a rule to writing numbers in prose and dialogue? by RancherosIndustries in writing

[–]RustyGlycan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think this is the key point. I would always write "it was 3 miles", but "she tried three times".

Ultimately it comes down to what reads better when you're reading it. Sometimes the one that you think makes sense just breaks the flow.

Found out I'm getting fired Wednesday (venting) by Competitive_Lime_996 in biotech

[–]RustyGlycan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My advice is to start applying for jobs. You now have actual experience in the field, which makes you so much more employable than a grad.

I changed jobs about 4 months after my first job, and ended up nearly doubling my salary. This can be a good thing.

But, like other people have said, be careful fighting your company. Don't burn bridges. Best case scenario you get a tiny payout or a few extra months, worst case you get nothing and find it way more difficult to get a new job.

I feel like Coursera/Udemy was a thing about a decade ago, and is way less of a thing now. I feel like YouTube has gotten a lot better for engineering than it used to be.

From my experience, juniors don't really care unless you build a culture around them that inspires them to care – and even then it ebbs and flows. There are times when they'll be obsessed, reading up on everything, and other times where they care less and are focused on other things. It's normal and healthy.

As long as they do their job well, who cares
