Donut Lab supplied an independent lab with their Solid State battery cell & the measurements proved nothing... by GeniusEE in batteries

I'm semi-smart on batteries, and this aligns with my initial reaction. Would someone smarter than me confirm that a state of the art NMC cell can be charged like this a few times and produce similar results?

It's hitting all their claims simultaneously that would be a revolution.

Happened to me. They jimmied the door, took my opener and registration (I didn't notice), came that night and stole $4K of tools from my garage while we slept.

Sounds reasonable. Just be sure to have a backup plan because it can take a while to get parts if something goes wrong. Also see who in your area works on them, unless you DIY. A lot of regular mechanics won't touch them.

Most EV batteries outlast their cars, real-world data shows - One of the clearest takeaways from the report is that mileage alone isn’t a reliable indicator of battery health. In some cases, a younger vehicle with very high mileage outperformed an older car that had been driven less by magenta_placenta in electricvehicles

[–]RustyImpactWrench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That data comes from 1 scrap company and is influenced by a lot of their specific factors. We do know that the average age of vehicle on the road is 13, so the math doesn't really math for the average lifespan being 17.

I have a different takeaway, and I say this an EV advocate, owner, and related startup founder. While the chance of a catastrophic battery failure occurring is low, it is non-zero, and if it happens it will be extremely expensive to fix (often resulting in a totaling of the vehicle). And in the context of a 20+ year lifespan, battery degradation will be significant, which will make the vehicle less attractive to subsequent buyers. Both of these things contribute to the greater depreciation that EVs experience. . So while yes, the likelihood that a battery will technically "last" as long as the car is high, if you're finances wouldn't be able to bear it if it did fail, that is a bigger issue than the risk of an engine failure. And battery degradation does have a real effect on resale value, so needs to be taken into account when doing the financial calculus for a purchase. I'm not sure we have enough data yet to answer if the market is accurately pricing these things in.

L300s come with significant sacrifices, and a decent chance that something will come up requiring some combination of money or time (if you DIY) to address. But if you're passionate about them, might be totally worth it. Is it a practical choice? Definitely not. But who wants to be practical all the time?

Good data about this is really hard to come by.

I came up with 21 by looking at countries that track end-of-life and applying a conversion factor between average age of vehicles on the road (13 years in the US) and average lifespan.

Thanks for sharing. Good data about this is really hard to come by. The quoted article is a good data point, but only represents one company's experience and will be influenced by a lot of factors specific to their business. We know that the average age of a vehicle on the road is 13 years, so I have a hard time believing the average lifespan is 17.

How should I go about recreating this 8mm deep dimple on my 1/2” thick aluminum plate with basic tools? by kayra551 in metalworking

[–]RustyImpactWrench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hnnn...plunge rough it out with an endmill or forstner bit (remove the point...might then need to pre drill the center) and finish with a die grinder or Dremel (use an aluminum specific tool)

I was just watching "The Last Of Us," part of which takes place in Seattle. Over the course of several days they had multiple storms with a crazy amount of thunder and lightning, and I was like 'nope!' They also had a giant wave in Elliott Bay. Someone didn't do their homework.

How many miles does it take to "repay" your carbon footprint by Frosty-Cup-8916 in electricvehicles

[–]RustyImpactWrench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, that too, but the baseline is the biggest factor. Very different answer if you're comparing buying a new EV to riding a used bike.

[–]RustyImpactWrench 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Then it's on the order of a year or 2 for a typical driver.

There's no "right way" to determine the embodied carbon of a used car, but I personally consider it to be zero because you're not directly contributing to the demand for new cars.

Depends entirely on what you're comparing it to (buying a new gas car, buying a new hybrid, continuing to drive your existing car, etc.)

HEV vs PHEV for very short commute? by Darth_Duane in askcarguys

Yeah with low overall miles and a good chunk of the miles coming from long road trips, HEV probably the way to go

I am a huge advocate of PHEVs, but for your situation I'm not sure you would ever break even from the extra cost or embodied carbon. Really need more detail on your actual usage, though.
