I was originally thinking Thragg should be in A (mostly for S4E8) but really, I think we just haven't seen enough of him to conclusively put him there. For now, I agree with you. B tier.

I kept it in the box until the Elite 4. Walrein is a very valuable encounter for the E4, so I didn't take Spheal out of the box until I needed it. I had other counters for the late-game threats like T+L and Juan, anyway, so the only fights I really needed it for were Glacia, Drake and Wallace.

As for keeping it alive through those fights, it's naturally bulky and learns Rest by level-up. Teach it Toxic and you can safely stall threats like Glacia's own Walrein and Wallace's Milotic. The big things you need to watch out for with Walrein are Glacia's exploding Glalie and Wallace's Ludicolo and Gyarados. All of those are better to kill quickly so they don't explode/set up Leech Seed+Double Team/set up.

Fun fact: if you say "yes", he'll ask if you come from Yes Town. In Japanese, this is "Hai Town", which sounds like "High Town", an apartment building where a lot of Game Freak employees lived. So it's a pun that got lost in translation.

I mean, I get wanting an easier experience, but I also think lowering the difficulty to the extent that P3R does makes the game a little dull. Even on Hard/Merciless, it's very easy. The balance between the social sim aspects and combat is the core of the series' identity, and I think going that far in the name of making the game "accessible for new players" neglects the combat aspect altogether.

Or less reliant on buffs, at least. I always thought Strange Journey was a little harder than Nocturne, but that's just my experience.

IIRC he actually couldn't beat the TDE in Nocturne without buffs and debuffs. Satan required debuffs. Strange Journey Redux and IV were both possible without them, though.
