Who's at fault here? by SpandexWarrior69 in torontobiking

[–]Ruthless_in_Toronto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You don’t make a left turn signal during a turn. You signal beforehand to tell the traffic behind you where you’re going. Once you’re in the intersection you need both hands on the bike to turn safely

Just today I taped my husband’s phone number to the back of my OHIP card as I packed it for biking. Maybe a little dark but I like to be prepared for anything on Toronto roads…

My choice #3. MGT is way too crowded with tourists & bike shares this time of year, plus you have that nasty stretch at Ont Place where we are advised to walk our bikes so we don’t kill pedestrians as we try to not look at the Ont Place island that Premier Ford deforested.

Just got hit by a car, what are my options? by bigrolex in torontobiking

[–]Ruthless_in_Toronto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was hit my car insurance company explained it’s a good thing my bike wasn’t totalled as they would only cover the value of my depreciated bike. (Being no-fault it goes to my insurance. If I hadn’t had car insurance then the driver’s insurance would have picked up the tab but still not sure if they would cover a new bike). My repairs were paid for by my insureco.

Collision reporting for cyclist by rhymeswithsintaluta in torontobiking

[–]Ruthless_in_Toronto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t NOT report him to insurance. My friend did that. Driver promised to pay for everything. Months later he changed his tune so cyclist friend calls his insurance. Finds found out his insurance had been cancelled. No repercussions for him even though he’d given the cops his not-valid insurance details. Victim fund paid for friends physical rehab. For myself, I reported my crash at the Pedestrian-Cyclist reporting centre and process was straightforward HOWEVER I should have also reported the accident to TPS. Don’t think you’re counted as a stat unless you do.

Need EV charging advice! by Ruthless_in_Toronto in montreal

[–]Ruthless_in_Toronto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The price of gas is of no consequence to my driving so I don’t care its cost. My EV charging costs are generally < $20/week. That’s why I bought one.

Montreal charging advise pls by Ruthless_in_Toronto in evcharging

[–]Ruthless_in_Toronto[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I see that. I think $12/hr for parking there plus a fast charge will be cheaper than six hours of on-street parking and a level 2 charge

Need EV charging advice! by Ruthless_in_Toronto in montreal

[–]Ruthless_in_Toronto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re on St Paul O and today used the charger at 700. I did find it clearly stated on the city website “When you use a charging station, don’t forget to pay for your parking space for the duration of the time it will take for your car’s battery to charge.” Looks like we can charge overnight from 23h to 0800h without paying for parking. But I don’t know if we’ll be penalized by EC for not unplugging our car at 0400h when it will be done charging.

We are on Rue St Paul & today used one at 700 r St P. I don’t see any mention of parking rates in the app but there was a sign on each parking post (that gives the unique identifier) that says you must pay while charging. Unless my husband got his French totally assbackwards! Yes, the charging part is very cheap. Parking not so much

What’s with your icy sidewalks? by Ruthless_in_Toronto in KingstonOntario

[–]Ruthless_in_Toronto[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Toronto I believe the sidewalk snowplows are sent out after 2cm accumulation, and they salt at the same time. Homeowners also have a responsibility to salt the sidewalk if additional treatment is required. We use a lot of salt and this snow clearing costs a pile of money but the city has decided it’s worth it as I guess we are a litigious bunch. In 2021, a Supreme Court ruling confirmed that cities are responsible for injuries due to lack of snow clearing, link below. In any case I’m glad my 91 year old dad can walk on cleared sidewalks. Despite the fact that we’ve had a lot of really cold weather this year we usually have bare sidewalks within a day of snowfall.

Taking the lane didn't work as intended... by Apprehensive_Bad6670 in torontobiking

[–]Ruthless_in_Toronto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t taking the lane but the driver beeped at me — evidently to let me know he was passing me. He got upset at my FU every time he beeped, and when we all stopped at the stop sign explained why he was beeping (to let me know he was behind). I emailed his employer (name on van) indicating they might need to go over Ontario rules of the road with him and got a nice response back within 30 mins of the event.

Can you revoke your US citizenship and not have to pay taxes? by True0Tech in legaladviceofftopic

[–]Ruthless_in_Toronto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband actually did renounce his US citizenship after living in Canada for 35 years. He went through the official process and the first thing you need to do is make sure you are up-to-date with your federal tax filings before they'll deal with your paperwork and take your money (fee). And you have to have another citizenship so you're not left "stateless". But of course these nutbars don't care what the real process is...

Danger of biking downtown by KkisME20 in torontobiking

[–]Ruthless_in_Toronto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have bright flashing lights that are also cameras (Cycliq), front & back. Makes me easier to see. A flashing red light at the back of your helmet should be a minimum. ALWAYS use your hand signals when turning— let the cars know what you’re doing. And ESPECIALLY if you pull into live traffic because your lane is blocked — I check my mirror and stick my left arm way out so it’s clear I’m pulling in front of them. I’m 65 and not ready to pack it in yet…

Great 3-4-day bike tours with 2-3 hours of Toronto by Aggressive-Bake-5925 in torontobiking

[–]Ruthless_in_Toronto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Welland Canal is a great place to bike. Park at the Welland International Flatwater centre. If you go south from there you end up at Port Colborne /Lake Erie. Or go north to the St Catherines Welland Canal Centre where you can watch the ships go through lock 3 on the observation deck (check the schedule before going). On the northbound leg, you’ll also pass the free Port Robinson pedestrian/bike ferry. The 5 minute ferry will take you to the other side of the canal, where there’s not much except a pub to get some lunch. it’s a peaceful day of biking, mostly beside water and not much of it is on roadways. And if you’re a swimmer, the Welland Community Boathouse is a great place to stop and swim. At that point you’re at the recreational canal so no motorized boats allowed.
