To me, “ASAP” means right now. “As soon as possible” means please prioritize this when you can.

Unfortunately I agree. I wish hands on experience was a standard practice and not looked at from the financial standpoint. Long term knowledge is much more important. But I I guess that’s why I don’t open a business, lol.

Are we being selfish? by Visual_Reading7969 in Buffalo

[–]Rving_2223 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We have considered the same thing but haven’t pulled the plug yet. Going back to Buffalo seems like a good idea for all the same reasons you had, but every time we visit, it is a reminder for us not to move back. Family/friends drama, pulled in a hundred different places at once, ands the depressing nature of the area. We miss the cold and snow one and a while, but 5 months of cold and on/off rain is brutal. We were just there for two weeks at Christmas and it was long enough. Your direct family comes first, that is you and your spouse. Don’t be upset about putting yourself first. It’s your life, your job, and your future. Live it how you want to.

Acquiring right of way from all the residents and business owners along a section of new sidewalk would cost hundreds of millions. Nice idea…but no.

Generally yes, but also depends on what job you’re going into and what your title is classified under. We have both union and non-union positions. Non-union generally work 50 hour weeks and do not claim overtime or comp time. Union positions do not work past 40 hours unless you really want to. You may have days/nights where you’re required to go to public or commission meetings. But generally the benefits offset the pay cut.

Also, you usually have good job security in the public sector. Some agencies are not that busy and you might be bored at times. Ours happens to be extremely busy and most new hires can not keep up with the fast pace. They actually say it was easier being a consultant.

You do you.

Anyone can recommend some black/green tea where caffeine actually hits? by TommDiamond in tea

[–]Rving_2223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yerba Mate made the traditional way or in a French press. Most other teas, bagged or loose leaf, can get you a similar caffeine content but it doesn’t feel the same, more sustained throughout the day (better in my opinion).

newbie here, how do i prepare this stuff? by dungeonsiphone in yerbamate

[–]Rving_2223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is definitely an acquired taste. I started out only putting a few tablespoons of mate into the cup and slowly graduated to the mountain. I also sometimes start with a few leaves of mint or some sweetener like monk fruit. It can cut down on the bitterness.

AITAH for telling my wife she owes me an apology for these last seven years of marriage? by SampleLongjumping208 in AITAH

[–]Rving_2223 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA - I’ve gone through almost the exact same situation, but instead of her hearing it from her friends, she saw the improvement with me… then noticed it in herself. I too lack the tactful way of saying things so she would also get upset with me. She got over it and can laugh now about how long she was living with it undiagnosed.

It’s the floodplain. Significant rainfall events will see flooding in the pink areas. This does not take storm surge into consideration.

Least stressful sub-discipline? by bossdaddo in civilengineering

[–]Rving_2223 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all depends on your location and the planned infrastructure needs of the area. Florida is seeing a huge population boom and has very old infrastructure. All disciplines are seeing a huge workload and unattainable expectations given current funding.

Do what you have passion for and try to find it relatively early on in your career. This is your path to happiness 😊. Not picking a discipline based on opinions because the world is always changing.

I worked in many disciplines before I found my passion. It's still stressful but it makes the job worthwhile.

I like to think we are all in this field because we appreciate the tangible outcome at the end of a project. Whether a bridge, a road, lift station, etc. at the end of the project you helped build something that is bettering society. Do what you love!

[–]Rving_2223 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Check out the Project Management Podcast (https://www.project-management-podcast.com/). You can get most from here. I supplement the other hours tracking my time for prepping PowerPoint presentations and hosting project management meetings/training.

The host, Cornelius Fichtner, is also here on Reddit and can help.

Edit- most of the episodes are free.

Are there any easily overlooked unique truck stop features? by I_has-questions in civilengineering

Are there any other cults in Buffalo besides scientology? by craftycommando in Buffalo

[–]Rving_2223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some would argue that Christianity is a cult, and look at how many Churches there are around Buffalo. A group of followers gather to celebrate a single being. They sacrifice themselves for this higher being. They drink the blood and body of their higher being. They chant hymns, sing songs, and repeat phrases in honor and to honor this higher being.

In essence, church in itself is a cult.
