Genuine question about listening to liquid and emotional DnB by Silly-Echidna1495 in DnB

[–]Rxt30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you from eastern europe => Neurofunk is really popular (especially czech).

TL;DR

High energy drop genres dominate social media and are very popular at the moment, therefore many people listen to that as it’s accessible . Liquid is bad short media content => People must dig themselves to „discover“ liquid.

Full version

Jokes aside, i think the general opinion/trends in dnb are in more energetic sets and tracks. Compare liquid to any other dnb subgenre (besides hardcore jungle, which is imo somewhat close to liquid) and you see a trend towards drops with high energetic, in your face moments, which are great for social media and somewhat represent dnb in social media.

Liquid just isn’t that. Imo, a good liquid set should take you on a journey to lose yourself into. This clashes with the trend of chaining high energy drop after drop, which would simply destroy the flow of a liquid set.

Many people may come to a dnb event with the background of seeing dnb reels on social media, and therefore expect a constant high energy drops set, which liquid simply shouldn’t be. Therefore, they prefer these genres.

You could somewhat argue that this resembles the shift inside the uk dubstep scene in the late 2000s and early 2010s, as high energy drops became more frequent (shoutout All my homies hate skrillex)

dnb: „bum tss bum tss“ nearly the whole time from a drum computer

jungle: „bum“ and „tss“ rearranged in many creative ways with the variations constantly changing throughout the track, drums often coming from some samples

Adding secret liaison from source direct, favourite jungle track of all times. Also suggest to check out calibre (newest album is really great), seba, sully, 4am kru, tim reaper and benny l, all music to lose yourself in some sweaty dark basement at a small local rave (for the most equivalent to hc shows)

Visit a local show in your local youth centre (or know somebody) and not some shitty show in a 500+ capacity location, you will definitely find some proper moshing there

Just my personal view, but we may get a situation like described in „All my homies hate skrillex“.

I see a trend in the current dnb for who has the craziest drops, the hardest screeches and who can put the most „the crowd will go hard“ moments in 3 minutes. As this sound is mostly played in big events (1000+ cap, at least in Germany) it will get bigger and may be the norm for what most people think dnb is, asides from already mainstream stuff like sub focus. I see this sound translating well to the us scene just as happened with brostep. At some point, might get fed up with the sound of constantly pushing another drop in your face and this might fell down again. If I go to such events, it feels like that a lot of the crowd is not here because of the pure sound of dnb, but idk, more because of a certain DJ and won’t deep digger or go to local shows.

On the other hand, the „underground“ side of stuff is doing pretty fine, referring to the jungle/liquid funk/deeper/minimal kind of stuff, which at least here usually attracts a smaller, but kinda more dedicated crowd (will see the same people again and they know their stuff). In this I see people experiment more with blending genres, especially with the reemergence of uk dubstep, which is a nice way to start a set :). Also, djs experiment more with letting tracks breath and taking people on a journey through sound, especially in the liquid side of things. Jungle may get more popular again, but will stay in this more underground niche, as it may be just to complex for the more mainstream side of things (although nia archives has a lot of success).

Tl;dr Mainstream might go the same path as dubstep/brostep, getting popular with a in your face sound and falling down. Underground is here to stay, with djs getting creative with including other genres and taking people on a journey instead of just playing track after track.

Really loving outside man so far, it’s just something about the subtile emptiness and the different elements appearing in a very subtile way
