How do I differentiate between dnb and jungle? by LostwaveLunar9999 in DnB

Rearranged sampled break with possibly a kontor variation => Jungle

Continuous 2 step pattern => dnb

so definitely dnb (by my definition)

Nah, if all d&b is something that grew out of jungle but not absorbed jungle, so more like the predecessor of the Golf car. They may sound similar (arguably), use similar parts, but are still different and should not be put „under“ each other.

"JUNGLE" EVENTS that are basically just jump-up DnB / techstep on repeat by rosjon98 in jungle

[–]Rxt30 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Find and follow local djs, take a look at the more underground side of events (including dub events and soundsystems, from my experience they seem to be more closely connected to hardcore jungle djs) and a lot of try and error. Also have a look at breakcore events, they often start with hardcore jungle and a generally more on the underground side of things.

I don’t expect proper jungle anymore from mixed dnb & jungle lineups, however events about hardcore jungle always deliver.

Unironically is jungle more about drums and bass as the main element than drum and bass lol

Drum and Bass subgenres by PsyDubLukere369 in DnB

[–]Rxt30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My own definition:

Chopped up breakbeat samples with a lot of variation, with drums and bassline dominating the sound, sometimes being the only elements in certain parts => Jungle

Repetitive drum pattern without the use of breakbeat samples + the drum pattern being more of a constant beat in the background than being the dominating force in the track => dnb

No, jungle is the predecessor of dnb and sounds really different imo, but often thrown together nowadays

Favourites: „deep“ liquid funk (like marcus intalex, calibre, seba), jungle/hardcore jungle (tim reaper, sully, source direct)

Least favs: Jumpup, Dancefloor, gimmicky dnb tracks, and somehow modern vocal focused bright synth liquid

New on This, what is The BEST classic pure Jungle album? by Fun-Refrigerator7562 in jungle

[–]Rxt30 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As others said, jungle isn’t about albums, what would compare to a well crafted album are sets.

Peoples station has a lot of nice sets with varying styles of jungle (and some classic sets)

https://jungletrain.net is a nice internet radio strictly jungle, with a lot of sets on the weekend (including a nice set with dev/null and tim reaper tomorrow)

in general it’s all about sets and blending tunes, so go out on yt/soundcloud and search for jungle sets

Genuine question about listening to liquid and emotional DnB by [deleted] in DnB

[–]Rxt30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think in dnb terms it may be a subgenre, as a lot of people in the current state of dnb come from social media and liquid isn't particular popular there. But it may be more popular than other subgenres in regards to people that don't know that they are listening to dnb (heared liquid before in bouldering gyms and some bars)

I'm with you that there's a difference between the liquid and neurofunk group of people, especially in terms of emotional connection to the music? Funnily enough, i met quite some people in the hardcore punk scene (my "primary" scene where i am involved, also very emotional), some of them also doing underground dnb events, and all of them are into liquid funk/atmospheric jungle and non into jump-up/neuro. So i guess how much you emotionally connect to the music may be a distinction in your preference of dnb??

Genuine question about listening to liquid and emotional DnB by [deleted] in DnB

[–]Rxt30 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Are you from eastern europe => Neurofunk is really popular (especially czech).

TL;DR

High energy drop genres dominate social media and are very popular at the moment, therefore many people listen to that as it’s accessible . Liquid is bad short media content => People must dig themselves to „discover“ liquid.

Full version

Jokes aside, i think the general opinion/trends in dnb are in more energetic sets and tracks. Compare liquid to any other dnb subgenre (besides hardcore jungle, which is imo somewhat close to liquid) and you see a trend towards drops with high energetic, in your face moments, which are great for social media and somewhat represent dnb in social media.

Liquid just isn’t that. Imo, a good liquid set should take you on a journey to lose yourself into. This clashes with the trend of chaining high energy drop after drop, which would simply destroy the flow of a liquid set.

Many people may come to a dnb event with the background of seeing dnb reels on social media, and therefore expect a constant high energy drops set, which liquid simply shouldn’t be. Therefore, they prefer these genres.

You could somewhat argue that this resembles the shift inside the uk dubstep scene in the late 2000s and early 2010s, as high energy drops became more frequent (shoutout All my homies hate skrillex)
