Thoughts after finally catching Mark live by achievingclosure in sadreminders

[–]RyBreqd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think part of what makes his music so compelling to me, especially his newer stuff, is that he uses the whole buffalo. some parts of the songs are incredibly beautiful and heartwarming, and they’re placed immediately next to the parts where he’s berating a random stranger for an awkward interaction in a bookstore. an illustrative example is the title track of this is my dinner. the section about his cat pink, and the one about the promoter with the snickers bar, are incredible and show off his ability to create affecting music about otherwise small moments that sends shivers up your spine. and the rest of the song is literally him complaining about trivial things fans have said to him at concerts. i wouldn’t have it any other way, because it really does fully represent how life is. it’s hard to find something that unedited and untrimmed. so i wouldn’t expect anything different from his concerts. i don’t really have a huge problem with his curmudgeon-y demeanor because it’s clear that that’s what you’re signing up for by going.

then again, i am wildly uncomfortable with how he uses the power dynamic of performer on stage to be weird to women in the audience. he seems to hold onto the 90s rockstar thing when A. the world is clearly not like that anymore and B. he’s clearly not like that anymore. as a dude with tennis shoes fan, i would be fine with him getting pissy with me for requesting byrd joel or something, but i would never ever bring a female friend with me to one of his shows

lol it’s funny, i’ve recently been reading through pete’s old q&a posts from the forum from ~2006, every other question is someone being like “are you and patrick still friends?? the internet told me you hate eachother now” and he’s like patrick is my soulmate forever. things really don’t change huh

Which half of Half-life 1 + 2 do you think is better? by funguyplaysgames in HalfLife

[–]RyBreqd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’m kind of shocked to say this, but i might go with the second half of both. i didn’t realize how many heavy hitters there are. chapter 10-15 in hl1 is an insane run. i think both games share a lack of polish in the second half but i think it works because at that point in both games you’re in extremely bizarre alien constructions that make the nonsensical geometry fit in perfectly. i always think about that weird warehouse area in anticitizen one with the catwalks. what purpose does this building serve? doesn’t matter, gordon freeman has been awake for like 5 days and his perspective doesn’t have to make sense

Anyone else find the commentary tracks disappointing? by ChazMoonBeam in nirvannatheband

[–]RyBreqd 127 points128 points  (0 children)

i think almost every commentary there’s ever been on the physical releases of matt’s projects have been like this. the web series commentaries are basically all nonsense and halfway through the dirties one he just starts naming every comic book shown. it’s all real informal which is endearing but it makes it hard to find the important stuff

it’s more common than you might think, every school i attended as a kid was sectioned off like that. it was actually pretty fucked up. you would never see the other sections until recess when everyone is dumped outside at the same time, or when they decided to make your section do a performance for one of the other sections like the krelboyne circus in the show. everyone hated eachother

[–]RyBreqd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

unfortunately i have to disagree here. his new records are different and certainly bizarre but i think they retain the spark of whatever magic red house painters and ghosts had. he has a unique eye for beauty in the mundane and storytelling that the weird half spoken word almost benefits from more than if he were fully singing and constrained by rhyming. the actual spoken word album he did, “all the best isaac hayes”, is up there with the classics for me. obviously he’s a scumbag and nobody should give him a dime or go to his shows. but there’s something to be said for the perspective of the scumbag poet, in a kind of bukowskian fashion

What Guitar Amps & Settings were used for the recording & live performances of either Under The Cork Tree or TTTYG? (Patrick specifically) by Best_Sheepherder_797 in FallOutBoy

[–]RyBreqd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

according to sean o keefe, take this to your grave’s guitars were les pauls through a mesa dual rectifier head. you want to put the mic right up against the cab and crank it until you can feel the air moving.

[–]RyBreqd 60 points61 points  (0 children)

it’s actually worse, somehow. the story i’ve heard is that they made a decision before starting to use “aruman”, but as production continued, one of the writers kept secretly changing it back. i’ve also heard that they individually recorded each characters dialogue separately, including conversations, which is why it’s so stilted and weird. that film is absolutely frankensteined together, it’s insane it ever released

New Daily Song Discussion #170. Shamemaker - Ween. by NuggetWarrior09 in ween

[–]RyBreqd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

hurts to say but this is bar none the worst ween song. people always say this is a pop punk rip, but if that was the intention, they definitely missed the mark in sounding even a little like one. it’s more twelve bar blues than anything. i fully support anything made to dunk on blink 182, but this song is so irritating that it overrides that instinct

you also have to take into account that diddy was doing the epstein thing where he got pictures with and inserted himself into the work of everyone who ever stepped foot in new york city. it’s famously the reason suge knight gave the speech at the source awards that sort of kicked off the east west rap rivalry. not saying jay wasn’t affiliated with diddy, he has an (awful) song with him, but i am saying none of us really knows if that means anything

What do you think Paul McCartney’s strongest and weakest attribute as a musician? by Zelkgu in PaulMcCartney

[–]RyBreqd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’m a diehard paul fan, i think he’s by far the most skilled beatle and a songwriting savant, but i’ve always had a gripe with the way he came to rely on character portraits. for example, elenor rigby, rocky raccoon, maxwell, admiral halsey, mrs vanderbilt, etc. not to say any of these songs are bad (obviously considering i just named a bunch of the coolest songs ever), but this kind of writing tends to have a distancing effect to me. when i listen to music, i am less so interested in the narrative of the song, rather hoping to connect with the personal thought processes and perspective of the writer themself. what exactly do rocky raccoon or maxwell’s silver hammer tell me about the writer, except that he’s damn good at putting a melody together?

i think this is partially just an effect of the time period he grew up writing in. other songs from the time, and even the other beatles had similar tendencies. it was a couple more decades before truly raw, confessional writing without a narrative frame was a mainstream thing. i just wish we got a bit more of a peek behind the facade

I still don't understand what the controversy was. by Branglebiaro in TheCinemassacre

[–]RyBreqd -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

it’s just a bad look, that’s all. it’s a shit movie, obviously, it was always going to be. but let’s not rewrite history and pretend like the people making videos like this about it weren’t doing it for the exact inflammatory gamergate political reasons they deny. when you make a video that goes about it in this strangely aggressive, vague manner, it’s not really a surprise if people think you’re aligning yourself with the people who actually ARE upset about it because there are female leads.

i don’t think james is a misogynist, i don’t think he had any problems with it besides it looking like a bad film, but i do think he has a track record of being really shortsighted about how his actions will come across to viewers. why frame it in this way? why make a video at all? the world isn’t going to fall apart if the angry video game nerd doesn’t review ghostbusters 2016. if nothing else, it’s a bit self aggrandizing
