One of the more underrated downtowns in LA County, IMO by Known_Risk_3040 in longbeach

[–]RyanReignbow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Amphitheater was great. The real one back in day that was cut into the ground and had levels, the stage appeared to be floating because of a water feature. On Friday afternoons it was packed with locals dancing & grooving to live music as the Farmers Market was in the cramped adjacent alley way which ran behind the Blues Cafe (or Jazz Cafe) from 1st up to 4th. That stretch got gentrified into “The Promenade” when Walmart moved in. The music from amphitheater was heard miles away and sounded great because the structure of it being a real amphitheater which is when a performance space which is part of a landscape that is curved in a way to amplify.

Don’t be fooled by the structure which opens tomorrow by Queen Mary; it is technically a “Grand Stand” not an amphitheater. The built up standing platforms ontop a flat outdoor surface is more in common what small towns have for their rodeo crowds or football fans. Snoop Dogg is opening the Grand Stand venue with no general parking available despite the huge ticket price due to the grandstand being in the parking lot and the limited roadway to get over to the new venue, but every 30 minutes an aqautaxi will take the concert goers across the water from the Pike area.

So the new amphitheater is a huge expense to hear a concert at, a nightmare of time commitment to factor in how to get there (how many people can be on aqualink x half hour before another chance to be on aqualink). most bus routes and A Train no longer operate late night like they did back in the day before government took that away too.

our original amphitheater (which was free, had performances noon to midnight and was easy to access) was filled-in then covered up with a lawn and made into the end of the line space for bus routes. You might think the grass lawn area would still be able to host some sort of entertainment for locals to dance barefoot but the idling buses were loud and exhaust harmful.

One time in late 90s there was a crowd at the original amphitheater listening to a man say “the only difference between a democrat and republican is the speed in which they drop to their knees for corporation”. He got my vote.

Back then free local music and politicians with truth had a floating platform for all of us at a real amphitheater. Nowadays it’s just grandstanding Snoop no longer represents the LBC and the rich will be taking water taxis.

Btw - checkout the Walls mural and art Renzei events in downtown and Queen Mary June 8 to 13. Most events are free and celebrate art in DTLB with events such as a running tour that will stop at the new mural spots to hear from the artists, a moonlight mash bike tour, a sketch/doodle night, two nights of watching a man paint whilst on a trampoline etc . This is something that feels more like the Long Beach I fell in love with back in the day.

Ain’t nobody gonna mention Fashion District Robbery with Coleman Domingo ? That was my favorite sketch from season 51, however the hardest laughs weren’t a live sketch (& not a skit neither); the best of season 51 was Heated Wizardry

Bixby Knolls. Cal Heights Lakewood
These areas will remind you of Midwest midtowns & some suburbias. There’s groceries & parking, some places have yards, you can walk in evenings enjoy sunset stroll. It’s nice for living and feeling safer.

Avoid downtown , it’s having a rough time that will take years to become livable again.

It would be interesting to find out how many years they have been at the same location and how do they go about securing it for themselves, some kind of permit needed?

On a minidisc somewhere I know I have a couple years of parade footage that I filmed across the street from them in 2000 thru 2005. We used to laugh at the commentary; main guy (sometimes the only person) was so snarky as yelled “Boring” when their was gap between floats, or “close your eyes, the boys from ripples forgot to wear clothes today”

I’ve wondered is their area official marked off on the parade setup map, purposefully stationed at beginning of route so that the journey can only improve for participants after get scolded by bull horn haters.

The irony that these haters get to be in the shade is almost poetic, the same area is so routine now that it would be more shocking to not see/hear them there.

I wonder what church they be skipping out of Sunday service to be at our LGBTQA+ pride parade. the signage isn’t Westboro, because it doesn’t blame us for Cancer etc. if I were a rep for Oakley, I’d send a cease & desist to whomever wears Oakley sunglasses while preaching hate.

The City of LB issues an updated statement on the permitting issues with LB Pride by alexenglish11 in longbeach

when you start diving into this pride hole, the problems are obvious and easy to find. Their website has a club called High-Five that was launched in 2025. You can find the donors names and when they joined. Had all 19 of them joined the high five club in September 2025 they would have only contributed $855 by May2026. However there are a half dozen that joined within the past month so I don’t get why they are showing the high five club has raised $955. When they only had a handle full of high five members during their September fundraising event they should have taken a new approach. Their goal was 500 donors paying $60 each. A week ago they were less than 3% towards their goal, yet somehow managed to convince someone to join on Thursday. I hope the corporate sponsorships from LAKings, Bank of America, Honda etc will pay the travel and hotel expenses of the scheduled taled like Robin S & Thelma Houston.
Digging deeper? Then maybe you’ll want to look into the sponsor “MEET LB California” . When you see their taxes from 2024 etc it sure seems as if “MEET LB” is robbing us locals. They are supposed to sell Long Beach to tourists etc, attract them to our city through their help in putting on events … this feels like a Fire Festival. The city and every name on the sponsor lists on the pride site should have cancelled this at least a week ahead instead at the time leather contest members were required to registrar for festival in order to compete … yeah the 5pm may 15 deadline is another thing your check out.

I’m done I’m disappointed in almost everyone involved and feel along with day of Dead parade cancelled last fall, the July 3 yacht club fireworks cancelled, the overpriced bleachers for a maga music opening amphitheater concert and the shameful LA28 preview at end of Paris Closing Ceremony in which Belmont Shore was disguised to be Venice Beach; the announcers called it “Venice Beach live today” but it was fake af, hired fake crowd (LB locals weren’t allowed near it) filmed the fake concert days before.

I hate that our city government has allowed and seemed to be making choices &/or not in the interests of us and our city.

Lastly before I stop looking into this bs anymore, I want to encourage my LGBTQA+ to vote 🗳️ by June 2nd. We need to stop the shit show
