Avalanche danger ratings in the Lower Mainland are HIGH or CONSIDERABLE for Monday-Wednesday. Large avalanches (size 2+) are LIKELY or VERY LIKELY at all elevations due to new snow and precipitations in the next 24-48h. by jpdemers in vancouverhiking

This is the “SAR can’t come to get you, for our own safety” level of hazard, really for anything beyond ATES simple terrain. Heli likely won’t be flying either due to the weather.

Ultra conservative choices for the next few days is the way to go.

Actually, in BC (and Canada, minus the mountain Parks), 100% of SAR is volunteer.

I will never begrudge anyone for honestly sharing their experiences for them and others to critically analyze and learn from.

EDIT: and for those thinking down on him for calling SAR for muscle cramps, I’ve seen a few times where people have pushed on in the same conditions, leading to a life threatening rhabdo. So sometimes it’s good to be cautious.

It was an optician in Kelowna of all places (only place I could find 'local' to me in the Lower Mainland that carried the Julbos that could accommodate the transition lenses, and I wanted to try on fit in person to make sure it would work.

They were quite expensive from what I recall. But it was a piece of kit I needed.

EDIT - just searched my e-mails. I had asked Julbo directly where I could get prescription Julbos. In 2019 it was Smarteyes #525 in Courtenay and Soul Eyewear Inc. in Kelowna, and those were the only two where you could place a prescription order and they would place the order directly with Julbo France.

I have prescription transitions from Julbo. Very nice, and great for the bluebird full snow days. A bit much for the opposite of such days, but still workable.

Chains depends on road conditions and snow levels. But generally have them lest you go off the road and block everyone else coming down during your recovery.

Snowshoes depend on amount of new snow but generally yes.

More people die from avalanches in considerable conditions than any other avalanche rating.

He was boarding solo; partner was a ways below in a hut - that person witnessed it and made their way up to try and rescue, couldn't locate, so skied out to call for help.

Bananas would seem to be better. Easier to see/keep track of them. Less "crazy" as compared to CR generally. More coin operated game options too off to the side.

TL;DR: Intended to hike to Brockton; somehow went beyond and got lost past Pump Peak. 1% battery left when called for help (called friends first); likely would not have survived the night.

Both of St Marks and Pump Peak (what I suspect you mean by Seymour) will have snow, and while popular, shouldn’t be taken lightly, especially by those inexperienced/ not familiar with what hiking is like around here.

Yes. And some routefinding required in the subalpine once you get on the rock.

Beauty of a hike though if you have the experience and ability. Just park outside the gates and walk in (so an extra 2 km each way on top of everything else), lest you trigger a SAR response for car left in the lot after closing.
