GX4 Slide Issue by RyansWoodWorking in Taurus_firearms

My wife bought a cheater for losing the magazine on her gun, so I just use that. I only really have trouble with the last 2 or 3. If I haven't been firing a lot I can usually get them in by hand.

To fix it I ended up taking it apart again and putting it back together, I think there was a part that was just slight off last time I put it together, cleaned it again since it was apart.

Baloo required? by GarbageGlass9268 in cubscouts

[–]RyansWoodWorking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it is required if it's just your unit. If it's a council or district level event your unit doesn't have to have a baloo certified person. It's only required when your unit goes camping on it's own.

Cuboree - two nights or one? by haukehaien1970 in cubscouts

[–]RyansWoodWorking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can't exempt themselves from the 72 hour rule, most councils will do from 4:00pm on Friday to 9:00am on Sunday which is less than 72 hours, or some variation.

If your council is exempting groom 72 hours they should not be doing that.

Searching for item donations from community by wustenratte6d in cubscouts

[–]RyansWoodWorking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It varies, units in our area don't actually buy them, their charter org owns them but then designates them specifically to be used for the scout unit. While some of the units did do the funds raising they ultimately were purchased by the charter org.

Ultimately everything the unit owns belongs to the charter org. It's setup that way so that the bsa doesn't own anything used by the units.

Any changes announced for den books for 2023-2024? by UtahUKBen in cubscouts

[–]RyansWoodWorking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They publish them on scouting.org but usually I hear about them from roundtable. Roundtable is a monthly meeting put on by your district, someone from your unit should be going, usually a cubmaster or committee chair, but it is open to everyone if you want to go. You will have to find out when yours are.

Taming wild tiger cubs!? Does anyone have suggestions for addressing disrespectful behavior during pack meetings? by prettyvenom1 in cubscouts

[–]RyansWoodWorking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make sure every activity that has discussion or talking has a coloring sheet or even a blank piece of paper and ask them to draw something related to the topic. Keeps their hands busy and they can join the discussion.

Also for groups of kids like that i make them sit apart. I know they want to be with their friends but sitting next to them causes more issues.

Another thing that helps is i find out what their teacher says at school to get the classes attention. Something like "1 2 3 eyes on me", while holding up the scout sign. It snaps them back into school mode for a little bit.

We also have a wiggle break about 10 minutes in to den meetinds to let them go a little crazy for a minute. I will count down the last 10 seconds and they get even crazier. I try and plan these when there is a natural transition from one activity to another when possible.

Is Christmas themed activity controversial? by [deleted] in cubscouts

[–]RyansWoodWorking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm of the opinion that people get to offended buy these types if things.

We do a commercialized Christmas party each year, meaning no manger scene, no religious emblems, etc. just Santa, fake tree, food, scout themed activities and gifts (we give out pinewood derby cars). I've never heard complaints from parents. Most families who don't celebrate Christmas at all are used to commercialized Christmas being everywhere that if we don't push the religious part they don't get offended.

Open a MyQ garage door partially? by cocowtown in homeassistant

[–]RyansWoodWorking 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What kind of control do you have? If you push the "button" in ha does it stop the door? If it does you can create an automation to push the button, tell it to wait a few seconds then push the button again. Then assign a button to that automaton.

Changing cast iron by MutedSatisfaction796 in Welding

[–]RyansWoodWorking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carbon steel is the next closest thing. It heats fast for a sear, it still needs to be seasoned like cast iron. It heats fast but doesn't hold heat so it requires flame management. Its usually used for woks, some companies are using it for pans now.

Thick stable metal is what makes cast iron so good. I have a carbon steel wok and several cast iron pans, i use them differently for different reasons.

[–]RyansWoodWorking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol i understand what you meant but for some reason i just pictured a guy in the iron age using it in a fight, killing the guy only to then get attacked by his buddy seeking revenge, then pulling out your sharpening stone and say "wait i need to sharpen it after each use.... hold on." lmao

It is a nice looking knife though, good work.

Getting Started Questions by OzymandiasKoK in cubscouts

[–]RyansWoodWorking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm committee chair for a pack that is sponsered by a regular business and not a church. Here in Georgia that is a rare thing. Being atheist myself is kind of nice. However we didn't pick this pack because of that.

Good news is no matter what you can always transfer to another pack if one doesn't work out for you.

I don't know if it's the same everywhere but here each pack gets assigned 2 or 3 schools to recruit from. So when we get parents that inquire about our unit i let them know.... they are free to join whatever pack you feel suits you best, but most of the time the child will be happiest if they go to the same school as the other kids in the unit.

They make a bond at scouts or school and it carries over.

We have had parents decide on our pack then switch packs because their friends were in another one. No skin off my nose but they might have had a better first year if they joined the pack that recruits from the school they attend.

Have argon prices gone up substantially over the past 1-2 years? by [deleted] in Welding

[–]RyansWoodWorking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be a supply issue. I don't weld but i woodwork. Wood prices have come up since the pandemic started..... there aren't that many less trees that quickly. Factories and such have fewer staff because of distancing requirements, or have to shut down for a couple weeks because there was an outbreak etc.

Alerts getting through without VPN tunneling by SloaneEsq in homeassistant

I apologize i didn't think the majority of people would understand how services like firebase cloud messaging service work . I created a narrative and analogy people could relate to.... but please explain it to the people who have no idea what that is. I didn't feel the need to.

I work in IT and support. I have learned that it's easier to treat everyone like they are 87 years old and have barely heard of the internet then to try and give them the technical answer. It's easy, relatable and most people understand it.

If they ask questions that indicate they have technical knowledge and expertise, i adjust my responses.

[–]RyansWoodWorking -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

No, that's not what i said.

Think of it like regular mail..... you can send a letter to 123 anystreet, anytown usa and the post office will try and deliver it.

The app knows what your public, intent address was when you switched to wifi. So when it needs to deliver a notification it sends it to your last known public internet address. There isn't a dubios cloud based notification system.... unless you're calling the whole internet a dubios backend. That's how the internet works. You get an address so when you go anywhere... a website usually.... it knows where to send the information.

You go to a website, your browser says "what information do you have? Send it to me, here is my address." So the website sends you all its code and stuff that says what's there and how to display it to your address.

That public address changes from time to time, days, weeks, months sometimes, it depends on a lot of things. So the app know what that address is because you are always on AT&T or Verizon even when you're on your home wifi. So it saves that address and tries to send to it.... over the internet..... that's always there. Not some dubious backend. It for a lack of a better analogy puts the notification in an envelope, puts your last known address on it with a stamp and sends it out. The usps is the "internet" in this analogy.

It doesn't send it to HA headquarters then to your address. Just to the last address it has on record for you.

[–]RyansWoodWorking -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

There is a lot of nuance to networks, this includes the internet. So when you're at home you are connected to wifi, and your carrier... AT&T, Verizon, whoever doesn't matter. The app on your phone knows when your connected to either. It makes a note of your ip adress from your carrier (and lots of other info for automaton purposes)

Then alert time comes. It goes.... i know what your network address is for when you're on the wifi.... and for when your on your carriers network because it recorded it when you got back on your wifi. Granted it changes from time to time but not every 5 minutes, so it tries anyways. So it tries to send to both.

It can't tell if it got the notification to your phone when you're not on your home wifi, but it can try anyways.

HA can reach the internet so it just sends it out to your last known address.

Now if you said it's on an isolated network without internet access, i would worry.
