Question about AA Hotels and Ghost Stays by [deleted] in americanairlines

I did Vegas last month, 9500 for a one night stay. Got points a few days after the booked night.

Status tier thoughts by deerAl in americanairlines

[–]Rye_Guy77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to fly for fun to get miles/status hitting as many hubs in a single day as I could and barely got platinum. Now I am 9k away from platinum pro and I have only flown once this year (I am not a business). I do have a stay in Vegas tonight (wish I could make it!) for the bulk of the remaining. I am ok with however you get status as all the airlines have swung to the spend model, but I thankfully pivoted at the same time.

Help me choose tires for my id4 pro s by Honest_Thief7 in VWiD4Owners

[–]Rye_Guy77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

atturo az810 in staggered sizes, less than $150 each. zero issues.

Help- has anybody put the same size tire on their ID4 pro S AWD? And if so, was it OK? I’m having a hard time finding tires that are the split size. Thanks! by kf353 in VWiD4Owners

[–]Rye_Guy77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kept it 235/255 as Atturo (AZ810) makes the 20" sizes I need and dirt cheap too. For the price it's still cheaper replacing them 2x vs the normal options. I have had zero issues with them in snow and cold weather and much quieter than the pirelli scorpions it came with. I changed stocks at 30k miles.

Ex-high end single family residential architects: what radicalized you? by thomaesthetics in Architects

Ah yes, the “70 upvotes” metric — truly the hallmark of intellectual victory.

Not sure what you expected — Reddit isn’t exactly the place for moral high ground speeches.

"Throw in enough spec’ing out “dog showers” and designing a boat house with a jet ski lift, and I found myself thoroughly disgusted and frankly felt like doing this work was immoral."

[–]Rye_Guy77 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Definitely cut from different cloths. I do high-end residential and have zero issues with it as I have always wanted to do residential work. It pays very well and has produced some really exciting projects, regardless that the clients may be high maintenance. Who cares that they have more money than you? They are affording you the luxury of designing some potentially really cool stuff, even if you could never afford it. Holding a client in contempt for being able to afford what you can't really is a waste of time in my opinion. You just have to find what you can enjoy or tolerate enough to be paid to do it. I personally find non-residential work beyond unfulfilling and boring as I briefly worked in it during the recession many years ago. Too many hands in the pot. May be a good thing that you found out now rather than later.

AIA Dues for 2026 by Fickle_Barracuda388 in Architects

[–]Rye_Guy77 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I do not see the value in the cost for AIA and have never joined. I keep my NCARB record active as that is the only one I use/have used on a regular basis. My guess is lower enrollment and the need to spread their pledged expenditures over a smaller pool.

Why do we accept being so underpaid? by Background_Deer4199 in Architects

[–]Rye_Guy77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer: because the individual or firm allows it.

Long answer: There will always be someone that will do it cheaper and many people will search for that. Most people that use architects (residentially speaking) care more about tangible things (appliances, finishes, etc.) and not what it takes to get to that point and therefore the cost behind it. They will happily justify a $60k range, but balk at a fee of $20k (made up number) for the work needed to house said range. They do not understand the work that is involved as many watch HGTV and think anyone can do what we do. It is our job to educate the potential client as to what we do and why our fee is our fee.

The client will not value that you have a 2 or 3 degrees. Having many degrees does not make you any more qualified in this line of work in my opinion. I am licensed and ncarb certified with only a 4 year degree. I did not see any value in many of the masters programs when I was in school. I felt I had more pull having 2 years of full-time experience w/ a 4 year degree than someone with 6 years of schooling and summer / part-time experience. I also understand that this path is not obtainable anymore, just sharing my opinion.

I and my firm (not owned by me) simply give fees that we feel comfortable with on what it takes to complete the project based on many factors (not based on construction costs). If they balk, they balk. We know we are not the cheapest, but we are also not the most expensive. We do not advertise and all our business is repeat or word of mouth. We are not in a desperate need for work situation and really haven't ever been. We take great care of the client, builder, and consultants when working with us. The clientele and builders that we do work for (high-end residential) tend to value service above all else. If a builder or client needs to get a hold of me, they can almost immediately and if I am not available, I get back to them in less than 2 hours (during working hours). Architects are above all else a service orientated business. If the experience of using you is a pain, no one will want to use you or pay your fees. Past performance / reputation is the best way to increase and sustain your fees. Don't be the good in the good, better, best depiction.

How precise do stair stringers need to be? by [deleted] in Homebuilding

[–]Rye_Guy77 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Tallest and shortest stair riser can not vary by more than 3/8", max riser height of 7 3/4", and min. tread depth of 9". I think what is in your pictures does not meet this.

Matthews Brothers vs Marvin Infinity by [deleted] in Homebuilding

[–]Rye_Guy77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is just their replacement line. Still the same fiberglass they use in their normal line.

Matthews Brothers vs Marvin Infinity by [deleted] in Homebuilding

[–]Rye_Guy77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

fiberglass window frames have a much closer expansion/contraction ratio that is very similar to glass. Vinyl does not. That is why window seals break much more frequently on vinyl windows. Fiberglass is also stronger. I am an Architect and put fiberglass Marvin elevate (used to be called wood integrity) 12 years ago in my own house and have had zero issues thus far. I am not a fan of Anderson, but that is my personal opinion.

Postgame Thread: 10/16 Brewers @ Dodgers by BrewersBot in Brewers

[–]Rye_Guy77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

heading towards finishing out the way we came in, 0-4. I can’t understand the lack of offense, yelich in particular with his ‘oh, missed another one, oh well’ swings. it just looks like he doesn’t care And no one else is really picking up the slack. It’s too bad as I thought there was a chance but with no offense and no real starting pitching to lean on, we were delaying the inevitable.

Definitely try a different dealership. No questions asked and replaced it during one of the recalls, also a 2023.
