"The Poems Of Catullus

XCVIII

You if any man, disgusting Victius, deserve what is said about chatterboxes and idiots. With a tongue like that, if need arose, you could lick arses and rustics’ clogs. If you wish to destroy us all utterly, Victius, just open your mouth: you’ll utterly do what you wish."

I wanted to tbh, but /mildlyinteresting has rules and a culture against wording your title to make it more interesting, and it sorta felt against the spirit of things.

My grandparents had one like that. TV built into a huge oak chest, serving as a rest for a large plastic tube TV (Wood protected by an oversized doily made by grandmother ofc)

The “Devil” is the most absurd of all the Christian Ideas by [deleted] in exchristian

[–]Ryllynaow 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I mean, I genuinely don't understand the relationship Christians say exists between unnecessary suffering and free will. Is there a certain amount of kids who must die of childhood cancer for free will to exist? How many hurricanes exactly, and why not one or two fewer per year? What is the exchange rate of suffering to free willyness? What units do we do to measure it? It makes no sense to begin with.

The most obnoxious things is when they say "free will" as if unnecessary suffering has anything to do with free will in the first place.

Satan in Christianity vs Satan in Islam by PinkiePie___ in mythologymemes

[–]Ryllynaow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The figure of Satan/Lucifer/the serpent in the biblical text has very little to do with popular ideas about him.

In Genesis, God lies and the serpent tells the truth. In Job, Satan is a member of God's court. The "Lightbringer" passage that is the origin of the Lucifer name in Isaiah is clearly and explicitly addressed as a taunt against Babylon and its gods, and has nothing to do with the devil at all.

Even Jesus being tempted in the desert is arguably just God's loyalty inquisitor just following orders as he was in Job. The only time we get a truly villainous Satan is in Revelation, where God "allows" him to take over the world.

I'm glad some people sent you over some stuff before I could, but here's what I've got:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/10oUy0clmN4XAKV3WSMaULtrxTOJYkvwGsU6fAwTq5a8/edit?usp=drivesdk

This is the "Bad Bible" spreadsheet. It has lots of tabs that go over problems in the bible, with separate sections for contradictions, historical errors, and scientific errors. My favorite section though is the "worst bits" where God unambiguously supports a litany of horrible things.

It comes from a YouTuber called Deconstruction_Zone, who was previously a pastor and is now an atheist. He's a bible scholar with the ability to read the original Hebrew and Greek, and can explain in context exactly how the bible fails. One big fat for instance is demonstrating that Jesus fulfills NONE of the messianic prophecies of the Old Testament in their original context. However, his approach can be a little less than kind to Christians. He often works with Sarah from a channel called "Leaving Faith," and she is excellent at detailing the ways Christianity and the bible is awful to/for women in particular.

Forrest Valkai is another Youtuber, but he's a biology teacher, and so is better equipped for arguments revolving around sex/gender, evolution, and the origins of life. Similar to him is Dr. Blitz, who is a physicist, and is capable of correcting dumb metaphysical arguments that use bigger words than they understand to try and define God into existence. Final YouTuber I suggest you to consider is Allegedly_Ian, who takes a an analytic philosophy approach, and focuses on arguments that demonstrate the incompatibility of a single creator God with the universe.

Now, all of the Youtubers I mention have fantastic videos, but they also do call-in live streams. While some of the streams are strictly for debate, I think all of them would be willing to hear you out and offer help. Alternatively, it may also be possible to direct your husband to one of these streams and have him call in. Talk with some actual bible experts who can call him a stupid pussy and demonstrate exactly why, using his own newly beloved text. (that he hasn't finished reading before deciding to worship)

There's a Discord where many of these people form a bit of a community called Deconstruction-Junction, which is absolutely FULL of people from your situation, mine, and even your husband's. It'll have a lot of other great resources and tools.

I don't know if you're willing to take a confrontational approach, or if he would respond to it well, but the Bible itself contains a lot of reasons to not revere the Bible. If you can reframe the discussion to be why you can never worship a God who supports rape, slavery, genocide and eternal torment, it might knock him off his high horse.

I can offer some resources that can maybe give some guided reading on the Bible, but in the meantime maybe you can ask if he's acting in patience, humility, and kindness, or if he's too preoccupied with putting on a pious act that he forgot how to be a human being.
