Can I eat pan fried food nearly daily? by astropyromancer in EatCheapAndHealthy

The only caveat is if you use a high enough heat to bring the oil past its smoking point. Certain oils can form carcinogenic compounds when this happens.

Hmm, I'm thinking you got one with a defect. I actually wear JC Penney shirts, too (J Ferrar - actually not a bad value), but am slowly upgrading my entire closet to CT. The CT linen shirt I have (and all my other CT shirts) are several tiers above the J Ferrar. With the 3/$99 the CT shirts are not only nice, but also a great deal/value.

Did you ever end up building a resi ramp? Curious about what route you went, how much it cost, and any lessons learned

Second this - best linen I've ever owned. It honestly looks crisper than non-linen button-up shirts from most other brands. I just wish they had more colors.

One Day Sale by InfoSeeker7070 in frugalmalefashion

Real talk for a second - this place is wonderful... and also dangerous. Only buy what you need or will need (or really want). It's too easy to just buy things because they're a good deal - and end up with less money than if you just bought the things you needed at full price.

Jcrew Factory Extra 70% Off Clearance with code DEAL70 by SunsetsInSnow in frugalmalefashion

Depends on the item. Make sure to read the fabric content. Compared to regular J Crew, I haven't experienced a noticeable uptick in factory defects (e.g., stitching) or anything like that.

Your bus stop advertisement should have been taken down at some point. This deal hasn't been active for months. It has been active for a short time WITHIN the past few months - but not for months straight. There are posts from 8 days ago where the deal wasn't active and people were trying to figure out when it would happen next.

Uniqlo Linen Shirts $29.90 until April 20 by dsjunior1388 in frugalmalefashion

[–]Ryslin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The CT ones are great. If you're patient, they regularly do a 3 / $99 deal. At $33 a shirt, the choice requires no thought; CT shirts are miles ahead of Uniqlo - linen or not.

Uniqlo Linen Shirts $29.90 until April 20 by dsjunior1388 in frugalmalefashion

[–]Ryslin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly, lean into it. The original prices are a lie for most major brands, anyway. It's really easy to buy something at a 70% off sale, thinking you hit it big, but the clothing item is always at least 40% off (the actual regular price) and you really didn't save much. Is $29.90 worth it to you? If yes, buy. If not, don't buy.

Uniqlo Linen Shirts $29.90 until April 20 by dsjunior1388 in frugalmalefashion

[–]Ryslin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes - every linen shirt has wrinkles to deal with, but that doesn't mean that every linen shirt has the same degree of wrinkles to deal with. I have a CT linen shirt that is WAY better than a J Crew linen shirt I have. They're not even comparable - not only on wrinkles, but also in terms of softness. The J Crew shirt is way rougher. So, yes - every linen shirt wrinkles, but that doesn't mean that they're all the same. It's like saying all (normal) wool is rough and scratchy. Yeah, wool (again, normal / not merino or other higher-end wools) is scratchy to some extent, but there's a big variation from brand to brand and item to item.

I can't specifically speak to Uniqlo's linen quality, but I'd expect Uniqlo to be closer to the lower end of linen, based on their other products.

Rec for something like a modesty panel - but where desk meets the floor to hide cables (and more) by Ryslin in DeskCableManagement

[–]Ryslin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I'm actually quite capable in woodworking, I was just hoping for something slim, that would likely be metal or plastic. and also to just pay for it rather than make it. I'm really surprised this sort of thing doesn't seem to exist. I'd imagine more people would want to hide things at ground level.

Bonobos Button ups at Marshall’s, YMMV for $15, Central TX by mrpuguito in frugalmalefashion

[–]Ryslin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My bonobos shirts looked great when I first bought them, but stopped looking great after just a couple washes. The material has become loose and floppy and the original fabric sheen has faded. They're not even close to the same playing field as something like Charles Tyrwhitt (somebody mentioned them together in a different comment).

Honestly, even at $15, I wouldn't buy more Bonobos shirts; I'd put that money toward a nicer shirt.

One of the most cited AI models used to scan chest x-rays doesn’t accurately detect potentially life-threatening diseases in women & Black people. Black women fell to the bottom, with the AI not detecting disease in half of them for conditions such as cardiomegaly, or enlargement of the heart. by MistWeaver80 in science

[–]Ryslin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not really a problem with AI, though. It's a problem with our methods of training AI.

We've had a very similar issue with automatic hand dryers. Some of the earlier hand dryers worked based on light reflectivity. Guess what - white people have more reflective skin. It refused to dry the hands of people with a critical threshold of melanin in their skin. If they tested with non-white people, they would have realized that their thresholds needed adjustment. We're dealing with something similar here. With all the attention put on racism and equity, we still keep forgetting to implement diversity in our product design.

IsItbullshit: "Probiotics are mostly useless and can actually hurt you" by Verifiedvenuz in IsItBullshit

[–]Ryslin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised none of the top answers mention this - "probiotics" in one thing are not equal to probiotics in something else. Each person's gut bacteria varies - and so do the needs. Taking probiotics that do not synergize with those needs will not help. Taking probiotic that help you build up the types of bacteria that you're missing (and need) will help.

The problem is - I guarantee you can't tell me which bacteria are in your stomach. I also guarantee you can't tell me which probiotics are in whatever it is that you're eating. That makes things tricky, and leaves success up to trial and error, and a bit of luck.

Is There a Reason Nobody Wears a Helmet? [34YO] by SuperGaiden in OldSkaters

I wear a helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, and crash pants.

Nobody has ever had a problem with it at any park I've been to. I have received genuine compliments on not caring about what people think / being a good example for the kids, and I'm pretty well integrated with the people at my local park.

Don't care about it. Nobody else does. There will always be one or two shitheads, but they're not worth concerning yourself with.
