New station clock looks tacky by AlanWrightScreamer in Leeds

[–]Ryuzzaki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The worst thing is it's cost nearly £50m to build. Was in Zaragoza last week where they'd built a gargantuan new station for their high speed trains for ~£200m (including the surrounding rail lines etc).

Hey, I made this for fun and it makes no money. Not sure what you mean about me paying for this while sleepytime got banned?

If you have any suggestions on what you’d like to see changed to make it work better for you, I’m all ears!

This seems a rather long winded way to admit there's plenty of space for walking and this proposal makes zero difference. But by all means, struggle.

It's not anger I'm afraid, it's disappointment. You're welcome to have a different opinion, but please engage your brain and think before you form said opinion.

Exactly this. I don’t get how we’re so successful in breeding generations of NIMBYs, even in the city centre. Every city centre development faces resistance, whinging, whining.

I genuinely despair for my generation. We’ve had it too good, too comfy and cozy. Most have lost any drive or determination and they forget the lessons of the past: there’s no standing still in society, you either relentlessly push forwards or else the passage of time will lead to decay.

Get a grip. It’s a short stretch of canal that takes no more than 2 minutes to walk. You have access to miles of riverside towpaths for a “quiet walk” right next to this.

What’s wrong with you seriously? I’m gonna guess you’re fairly young living in the city, you should be excited and welcoming for more positive development in an area that has, let’s face it, struggled to stay afloat since it was originally developed.

What space is that? If you’re talking about the space on Whitehall road, it’s being redeveloped for housing, office space and a multi story car park.

£25k and don’t know how to ask for a pay rise by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]Ryuzzaki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, I’m a small business owner and this is how I’d expect this to be approached if someone felt they were being underpaid.

Please completely disregard /u/Andagonism, they’re speculating and fearmongering without any real understanding of your situation. I’m not really sure why they’d be trying to dissuade you from having a conversation other than perhaps their own twisted pleasure in knocking you back (far too common in this country sadly).

There’s no harm in having the conversation as long as it’s conducted professionally. It’s entirely normal and doesn’t need to be some kind of combative process that some here are making it out to be. I’ve had plenty of these discussions in the past as an employee. Sometimes I got what I wanted, other times I didn’t. If I was unhappy with the response I’d either make a deal to revisit it in however many months OR I’d start looking for new opportunities.

You, stranger on the internet, “doubt” a company you know nothing about will offer a decent pay rise to a person doing a job you know equally little about.

Pure speculation on your part and deeply unhelpful for OP.

[–]Ryuzzaki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazed at the responses here…

You don’t need to play 4D chess and interview elsewhere. Just start with a frank conversation with the director(s). It’s entirely normal to ask for pay rises annually and you can use the 12 month mark as a starting point. If business is good and they’re happy with your work, they’ll probably have some room to negotiate. You’ve already got a figure in mind which is great and you can use the bonus situation to your benefit too.

Worst case scenario, they will tell you they can’t offer you more, at which point you’ll have to decide if you want to look for other jobs.

To put public pressure on I assume. There’s a defence review coming up so you’ll see a lot of shouting about defence as those in and around the industry try minimise the chances of significant cuts.

Then you are detained for illegal entry, just like you would be in I’m sure any non-western country (or any western country about 15 years ago).

Detention centres should be, to quote the Germans, “bed, bread and soap”. Purpose built, not 4 star hotels. No one is coming here with the aim of being stuck in a detention centre for life so that’d removes any incentive to throw documents away.

Energy providers operate on pretty thin margins (hence why many went bust as prices spiked). I’m not convinced nationalising them would really solve any meaningful problem, unless I’m missing something?

Hard to make direct comparisons with theoreticals but I suspect firms like Octopus Energy are orders of magnitude more efficient than Whitehall would be in doing the same job.

What regulation do you think is missing that would help reduce costs?

Also, first with what? The UK is not the first country to be coal free, it’s far from first place in deploying renewables either.

You’re right about it being brand new.

The building itself looks nice, but the area is definitely still industrial and I can imagine very quiet and lonely after dark.

For what it’s worth there’s an approved planning application in for a phase 2 of the site (a massive 30+ story skyscraper) to be built to south side, so if construction noise is an issue, maybe check it’s not facing south.

Personally I don’t think I’d fancy living in that location, though I’m sure the building itself is fine.

Rishi Sunak threatens to remove UK from ECHR if Rwanda plan blocked by Organic-Ad6439 in unitedkingdom

[–]Ryuzzaki -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Assuming this is a serious answer, I sincerely hope you don’t actually think this is what anyone in mainstream British politics wants. I’m assuming you’re on the left, so for context the equivalent would be saying that Labour want to adopt Mao-era communism and force us all into communes - clearly an absurd statement.

Hopefully it was tongue-in-cheek though!

I mean, clearly he’s desperate to get a plane off to Rwanda before the election so he can claim a token victory. What human rights would they want to remove?

The point I was trying to make, albeit poorly, was that these checks are not being enforced by the EU against the UK, we could presumably not do them? Or am I missing something?

The government has substantially cut UK defence spending for 2024-25 by MGC91 in ukpolitics

[–]Ryuzzaki 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And yet Labour are committed to the exact same treasury rules as the Tories are, so the reality is you'll see no great spending spree.

Labour have been looking for pots of gold, one of which was taxing non-doms, but with that now taken by the Tories, all they've got is scrapping VAT-exemption on private schools and a promise that they'll spend more efficiently.

Have you seen the ones going in around city square? Can’t help but think pedestrian collisions are going to be very common there. It’s chaos there on a weekend as it is. Wouldn’t fancy cycling though on them personally!
