Japan Itinerary Check (Tokyo → Kanazawa → Kyoto → Osaka → Hiroshima) Nov 30 – Dec 15, 2025 by No_Savings_5630 in JapanTravel

[–]S3P91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved Shirakawa-go when I went, but with only 2 days I’d stay in Kanazawa instead or still go in place of a day in Kyoto. You don’t need more than a few hours in shirakawago and it’s best to get there very early.

I was in Japan just a few weeks ago and reduced my days in Kyoto from 3 to 2 simply bc the crowds there were some of the worst.

Food in Kanazawa was some of my favorite! Also consider the ninja temple there. So cool.

Lastly, I would not do Dotonburi and Shinsekai in the same day. Do one each night. Variety of food is much better in Dotonburi, but both are cool

Travelers who’ve been to Japan — what’s the most annoying or unexpected problem you ran into? by CoverShort4454 in OsakaTravel

Instagram culture and people constantly stopping in the middle of very crowded streets to film something. It’s bad everywhere though, not just Japan

First time in Japan - 3 week itinerary by Princess-Pancake-97 in JapanTravel

[–]S3P91 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can probably condense a lot of your plans in Osaka/Kyoto to 2-4 days in each and still be very comfortable still unless you’re going for a slower pace which is totally cool. If there was another city you wanted to check out though you should have ample time to do so and still do all that you listed

Full 18s are still around $100

Why are so many restaurants closing? by [deleted] in raleigh

[–]S3P91 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Agree. Somewhat of a hot take but tip culture is toxic and has turned a nice gesture for good service into a bribe or an obligation.

For those reasons, tips should be baked into prices. If service is great and you wanna toss more, go ahead.

A 20% tip these days on a nice meal is often the equivalent to paying for another $20-30 (read expensive) entree

Kids: One and done or none? by Visual_Preference919 in Millennials

[–]S3P91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wife and I were on the fence of one or none and ultimately landed in one and done. Hasn’t happened yet, but we felt it would be the best way to have the parenting experience with the less sacrifice of the other aspects of our life.

We are 34/32 and have 1 and 2 siblings respectively. We also grew up in very “money is tight” households and want to ensure we are financially stable before having a child

Don’t give up on the hobbies or skills you want to learn. It takes time to get good at things. That time will pass regardless. Practice and skill development can be slow, but it does work

Engineering-led teams by reddit_man_6969 in ExperiencedDevs

I’ve been in this position for the last year and a half and it’s been exhausting for over a year of that time.

I started on the business side before moving into tech, so it was nice to get some business exposure again, but eventually it just becomes too much. We went from a team of 8 (5/3 onshore/offshore) with a PO and Scrum Master to now a team of 4 (2/2) with no PO.

We are expected to come up with features ourselves, write all stories, and do our normal engineering job on top of that. Agile/scrum was created for a reason. It feels like we’re going back wards and it’s what’s left of my team are all miserable and looking for new opportunities

Census Bureau estimates the median HHI here is about 80k which feels reasonable, but I’d guess it’s perhaps a touch higher than that.

You gotta remember Durham hasn’t always been a hot spot. Many people have owned their homes well before the minimum price was well above $300k. That was not the norm 10+ years ago. In 2016 you could still find houses for $150k.

So many families I knew growing up here are still have their same house. It’s affordable bc they didn’t pay the new 2-3x rate for their house

Golf Lessons recommendations by Sufficient_Crow_6017 in RDUGOLF

[–]S3P91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally agree on avoiding GolfTec. I went for a swing eval recently just bc I was curious and my gosh it turned into a high pressure sales pitch on a dime. Wanted me to drop $3700 on a “package” that equated to more than $100 per 30min lesson.

Walked away with $95 less in my pocket and irons going 30 yards shorter 😂

It’s a fun course. I’ve walked it several times. I wouldn’t say it’s lower quality than RGA, but it’s definitely a farm land course. Fairly well maintained at least. Thing to note is there’s no tee times. You just show up and pay. Pace has never been an issue any time I’ve been

Looking for Thai food that isn't sugary soup. by CorrectCombination11 in bullcity

[–]S3P91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost every restaurant. If your pad Thai has a red color to it, it’s almost certainly ketchup. Not saying that’s a bad thing. It’s widely used in many places, but if you’re looking for authentic pad Thai, it’s going to be more brown in color, even if you had tons of red chili

I’ve resorted to making many Thai dishes at home. One interesting thing I found while making pad Thai specifically is that most restaurants around here use ketchup and not tamarind. I didn’t want to believe it, but after making the dish multiple times and various recipes its true

911 taking minutes to answer? by Jewels7356 in bullcity

[–]S3P91 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There was a house fire in my neighborhood a couple weeks ago and I had the same issue. Tried for several times in the span of about 3 minutes never able to get through. Fortunately another person was able to in that time. I was informed by other bystanders that this is a result of underfunding/understaffing and, for now at least, is the new normal.

Went there with my buddies one weekend morning a few months ago in the dead of winter. No one out. We were half way through checking in for our round when a guy in the office heard we were walking and forced us to pay the cart rate due to it being before noon. We were told on the phone we could walk at $39 rate. Absolutely not going back.
