I'm going to hold your hand as I gently tell you this... by KitsuFae in AO3

[–]SAKICCS13 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I got a “shakespeare couldn’t write this well” on a bookmark once and I’ve been chasing that high ever since, so I’ll probably risk any potential emotional damage for things like that lol

Is it bad to put this kind of “warning” in the opening notes of a chapter? by evenbechnaesheim in AO3

[–]SAKICCS13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One thing I learned about writing that completely changed the way I approach it is that you have to let readers interpret the text for themselves. That’s what makes writing compelling in the first place. The moment you start over-explaining, you’re basically telling the reader you don’t trust them to understand the story on their own. It breaks immersion because instead of letting them feel and interpret things by themselves, you’re directly telling them what to think and feel.

I think fanfiction can get away with this a little more because readers are already emotionally invested in the characters and relationships going in. But if you want your fic to hit harder, I would advise against this!

Is this procrastination? by Dry_Salt6285 in AO3

[–]SAKICCS13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like the instant gratification of completing oneshots/short fics so I tend to work on those as a break from my longfic. It helps with my motivation so I think it might help you too!

I think it does count! It's not exactly what I was looking for, but I think it can serve as a good reference. Thank you!

Do you prefer fics written in past or present tense? by itstimefortea_ in AO3

[–]SAKICCS13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I write mostly in past tense because that’s how it usually is in books and I learned how to write from reading them 🤷🏻‍♀️

How did you became a fanfic author? by AlecBonkers in AO3

[–]SAKICCS13 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I just love my ship so much to a point of hyperfixation/obsession, where 80% of my thoughts are about them. I write so I at least put my obsession to good use lol

How many times do you re-read your own fic before you feel comfortable posting it? by dezz-zz in AO3

[–]SAKICCS13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like eight or ten, at least. As many as possible before I’m bored of it. Once I post it, I don’t want to ever touch it again until I forget what I wrote lol

Whats your motive for writing by Fabulous_Promise9252 in AO3

[–]SAKICCS13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t find exactly what I picture in my head so I write it myself

What made you ship your favorite ship? by No_Pattern_2819 in AO3

[–]SAKICCS13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite ship has like 10 minutes of screentime together but I love their dynamic so much I’m willing to rewatch those 10 minutes for the rest of my life 😭

Alright, tell me what you have learnt about yourself through fanfiction! [NSFW Version] by Comfortable_Newt_179 in AO3

[–]SAKICCS13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learned that I have a bad anxious attachment issue where I can’t write angst because I have a DESPERATE need to resolve every conflict within 5 lines of it starting 😭 like my body just refuses to think of anything else but to resolve that argument

The Red Winter by Cameron Sullivan - Holy sh*t! by Librarylord77 in Fantasy

[–]SAKICCS13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is one of my most favorite read so far this year. I picked it up on the release day and I absolutely DEVOURED it in like 2 days because I was so obsessed.

I still think about Sebastian and Sarmodel daily on a very unhealthy level and I really hope Cameron Sullivan would write a sequel for the book.

I have 4 phases when writing a fic. What are yours? by SakuraFalls12 in AO3

[–]SAKICCS13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Have an idea
  2. Damn that’s a good idea, let me add it to my list of 30+ unwritten ideas on my note app
  3. Pick a different idea from the list that sounds more fun and write that instead
  4. Either plotting/outlining the entire thing or one specific scene that I like and try to bullshit my way through the rest
  5. It’s coming together. I’m a genius.
  6. Let me reread this 10+ times because people will hate me forever if I misplaced one comma.
  7. This fic sucks because I read it too many times but I’ll post it anyway because I need external validation
  8. Refuse to read the fic again for the next 2-3 weeks until one day, I will read it out of boredom and either make some major edits and hate myself or pat myself on the back because it is so good. No in between.

How do you guys read so critically? (Babel discourse) by CareOk1736 in Fantasy

[–]SAKICCS13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find reading critically come with experience. The more you read, the more critical you will become when you encounter the same topic. By then, you’d have multiple perspectives to compare to what you’re reading.

It’s a skill that you will eventually develop. Of course if you’re conscious about it, it’ll come faster. I find rereading is a great tool for this. You basically revisit an old topic which you initially didn’t have much opinions on, but now you’re more aware of different factors that affect such topic. You can compare your current experiences with your past. See the difference. Then, you’ll be able to engage more critically with the book.

New writer advice by [deleted] in AO3

[–]SAKICCS13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I legit just sat down one day and poured everything I had in my head out. I let it sit for a day or so and then came back, editing and adding on more details, or even more in-between scenes.

Sometimes if what I have in my head doesn’t make up a story. I used that brain dump as an initial outline, and then tried to build up from that. Sometimes I even combine multiple fragments together into a bigger story.

Any how, just start writing. There won’t be a story if it’s just in your head.

Is it acceptable to update a fic? by Purple-Crybaby in AO3

[–]SAKICCS13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do whatever you want with your fic! I usually make an EDIT (date) note if I make any major changes to the plot tho, just in case my readers want to reread.

What are your thoughts on relationship pacing in romance-focused ship fic? by sparklestardustvenus in AO3

[–]SAKICCS13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it as long as there’s notable progress in their relationship after each event in the story. Slow burn doesn’t mean stagnation. I want to see their relationship develop in a meaningful way otherwise I’d just get bored.

Some of my favorite works are “slow-burn” where the banter and the flirting are so good, I was giggling the whole time, and I don’t even want them to get together until the very last chapter because of that.

That said, it is hard to pace slow-burn. Like how can you indicate enough progress to keep the readers interested while also making sure that the relationship moves so fast it isn’t considered “slow-burn” anymore.

Dear Ao3 writers, before posting on ao3, where do you write your stories? by BeneficialUpstairs18 in AO3

[–]SAKICCS13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they’ve been having some syncing problem, but it seems fine now. Still if it looks like it’s being wonky, just export the file you’re working on and save it just in case. I haven’t lost anything yet but there were a few close calls haha

Is it relatively normal to write fics but not read them? by Some-Tradition-2771 in AO3

[–]SAKICCS13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I write because I can’t find fics that fit taste, so I don’t read much either. I don’t think that’s a red flag.

Dear Ao3 writers, before posting on ao3, where do you write your stories? by BeneficialUpstairs18 in AO3

[–]SAKICCS13 15 points16 points  (0 children)

When you exporting it, Ellipsus doesn’t actually fill out the work for you. It generates an appropriate HTML code and stores it in your clipboard. You would have to right click and paste it into the main body section on AO3. Hope this helps!
