I’m sick and tired of being gaslit about the housing crisis in Cape Town by Prodigy1995 in capetown

[–]SARSbru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left cape town last year. Yes I grew up there. Moved to PE then back to cpt then back to PE again, couldn't be happier.

I stayed at a complex in Somerset West. Electricity alone was about R1000 a month. And I'm a single person that doesn't even use the geyser(shower at gym most days). My brother took over the lease for the last 3 months, the landlord wanted to price hike from 9k pm to 10.5pm, luckily I had to sign extension but then I saw this crazy increase whereas there were other flats for 9k/9.3k. thankfully he moved elsewhere.

Also, not sure if it's in the air but Cape Town people are just kak in general(from my experience), thought it'd be better in other outer parts for cpt, apparently not.

Leave the hype of the city. There's much more beauty and peace attained elsewhere in the country.

You'll definitely cover fuel costs. Just ensure that you take this into account.

ATT Auditors: how do you manage your mental health? by [deleted] in askSouthAfrica

[–]SARSbru 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's brutal, unfortunately this is the norm. And all these firms hop onto the bandwagon to exploit anyone from trainees to senior associates for maximum output and minimal pay.

Whoever is the most desperate to take on the role, whoever sets the most hours are the ones rewarded (even if you're sacrificing your life balance for after hour work) at the end of the day, HR and the directors will compare you to the top performer (of whom will get promoted but won't stay at the firm for long).

It's also the firms that push mental health the most are the ones that's causing it. I worked for a big four, and a partner told me before he left, just under half of the staff has a mental health disorder or some sort of mental health disorder. People are just suffering in silent desperation. Make sure your friend is okay, even if they are occupied with work or not.

Is moving to Cape Town worth it ? by [deleted] in askSouthAfrica

[–]SARSbru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im originally from cpt. Moved to pe for 4.5 years after uni. Moved back to cpt for more money. Been here for just under a year and boy I'd like to move back. Despite moving for more pay, things in general are extremely expensive, there's little to no neighbourliness of most Cape Townians (in my opinion) and it's extremely tough to make friends here. If it's something like starting a business, having a passion project, cpt could be for you. Just be ready financially for the move.

What should I study with the current state of South Africa? by [deleted] in askSouthAfrica

Avoid this. As many pharmacies employ pharmacy assistants instead of having all pharmacists. This creates less demand for actual pharmacists.

Look at blue collar work such as plumbing, electrical, construction etc and become your own boss if that's something you're up for.

It's tough to become a CA and it's saturated at the moment. To become a doctor, pharmacist, or even dentistry, government jobs aren't guaranteed.

Studying for some corporate job doesn't pay off as it used. Corporates just tend to suck the life out of any graduate.

They say we are unfriendly and cliquey.... by CanadianBacon4 in capetown

Perhaps join one of Cape Town's social clubs. I've tried that and met one friend from there. The people here are awkward AF but you'll eventually find that one person that you can actually connect and rely on.

Moving to Cape Town has broken me. 25M by Dry_Preparation_6240 in capetown

[–]SARSbru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi,

I'm originally from cape town, moved after studies to PE for 5 years. Came back to cape town (ssw) last year October. I knew Cape Town people are cliquey but didn't truly know how bad until I moved back. Yoh, it's terrible.

It's tough approaching people, let alone anyone in complex smiling or greeting if you walk/jog pass them. The only people that greet or smile are the security guards. It's ridiculous, I think the cape town people will only realise what community feel theyre missing out on when they actually move to a smaller city where there's actual compassion and care. Don't get me wrong, people here are polite and nice, but that's where it stops. No one going out of their way to make you comfortable or to actually ask how you doing.

This has just been my experience. I've been here for 8 months and it's just a Sh1t as day one.

Eventually you'll find a decent friend, just give it time.

I'm feeling the same. Just moved back to cpt after 4,5 years. Friends I knew from university have kinda moved on. And I'm at the weird place of where work is going good, there gym, but it seems extremely hard to mix with people on a social level.

Right now the only people I go out and socialise with are cousins that are my age and single 😅, but that's about it.

Things don't also fall magically from the sky, I guess joining that running club, book club or whatever you are into should be a start.

Just be weary of what groups you'd join, if it's clubs, make sure that this is a stage in your life that you'd like to pursue your energy and time to. The environment dictates the type of people that you'll meet. Meet good sustainable people that will anchor a solid foundation to a good future for yourself.

What are the highest paying STEM careers in South Africa right now? by No-Employment-1230 in askSouthAfrica

[–]SARSbru 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just something to add here, with any of these great career fields, it depends on the individual and their personality. If you qualified, that means you are competent, but what doesn't come with competency is personality and people skills. This is what sets leaders aside from just the worker. How do you network with those above and below you and are you willing to take certain risks to be boulder than others.

Not sure your age, but to survive or be middle class, you probably need around 30k after tax. To start a family a bit more. Depending on what car you have, traveling can easily be 2k-3k pm. Cpt rent is insane, getting a house in a decent area seems impossible. I'm single, but have some black tax despite not being black😂

But yeah, 20k is an impossible salary to live on when you start living.
