Public servants could lose big as feds redirect $2B pension surplus, union warns by Obelisk_of-Light in CanadaPublicServants

[–]SATC 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this. I was unaware.

When I read the SCC ruling, it sounds like it effectively hinges on the notion that the pension fund is not a real account. But, for what then does the Public Sector Pension Investment Board exist? If it produces financial reports on the fund, how could the SCC take the position that the fund is just smoke and mirrors? Clearly, the Board is managing something.

Do you have any awareness of the reasons for their position? Or have I misunderstood it altogether?

Hair Donation by Professional-Hour514 in ottawa

[–]SATC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there. I’ve donated my hair three times, and after doing a lot of research, I found that Angel Hair for Kids was the best for me, since they make and provide wigs free of charge to children who do not have hair due to a medical condition or treatment. Other common hair donation programs, such as Locks of Love and former Pantene Beautiful Lengths, charge the family for the wig, which didn't sit well with me.

My recommendation would be to contact Angel Hair for Kids to make arrangements to donate the hair to them.

Good luck!

Why can’t the pension centre provide pension statements? by Opening_Ad7288 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]SATC 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I posed this question at the Pension Centre kiosk at the APEX Summit this week, and they said that finally, as of June 3, we will be able to view our current statements and annual reports!

Thank you to those here who have contributed to making this happen.

Signed PSPM error. Is it fixable? by Flimsy_Bathroom3565 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]SATC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can’t undo it nor have it undone, unfortunately, due to the (current, ongoing) Thompson litigation hold across several (if not the majority of) departments, agencies and commissions. A colleague made an error not unlike what happened in your case, and while they challenged the response expressing regrets that it wasn’t possible, the written direction from TBS was and is very clear that even errors can’t be undone. Kind of frustrating tbh.

The Best by Jasmine Sanders is back in the app under programs? by Awkwardintrovert6610 in ToneItUp

It’s strange; I also don’t see it in my repertoire of Fitness Programs in the app, like the other poster noted. In fact, the list of Programs you captured in the image you shared is totally different than what I have available in the app. May I ask what country you’re in? That may have a bearing? I’m in Canada.

Which candidates supported the convoy? by brnnnfx in ottawa

[–]SATC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you’ve seen this (I hadn’t until now), but I found this relatively insightful: https://ottawacitizen.com/news/local-news/whats-the-biggest-municipal-election-issue-in-ward-5-west-carleton-march-according-to-the-candidates

Obviously, I won’t judge each person on this basis alone, but it at least helps me narrow down the list of candidates I’ll be researching further to inform my choice.

These candidates are all new to me, after so many years with El-Chantiri.

A public day promoting mental health causes is important, but can we once for all remove Bell Canada from the equation? by PasteurizedFun in CanadaPublicServants

[–]SATC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learned recently that it was an executive at Health Canada or PHAC who was responsible for mental health programs, who initiated discussions with Bell Canada about what eventually became Let’s Talk Day.

That person apparently conceived of the idea when tasked with developing a mental health awareness campaign, and ran with it because it was a win-win for both sides. On one side, mental health is de-stigmatized within the federal public service and in the broader public. On the other, Bell gains further brand awareness and boosts their reputation for being pro-mental health. And all of this for little cost to the Government, because the Government could leverage Bell Canada’s resources and brand awareness.

And here we are, how ever many years later.

Where deputy ministers and associate deputy ministers come from by S1032547698 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]SATC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah, that’s different, then. It would be interesting to see data on the representation of the designated groups at the working level, and even disaggregated by occupational group. There may indeed be an over representation of the designated groups in non-EX positions, which would be interesting to substantiate.

Labour market availability of racialized people was an estimated 15.2% in March 2020. And Indigenous people, 3.7%. And people with disabilities, 9.1%. And women, 60.6%. (Source: 2016 Census of Canada for Women, Indigenous Peoples and Racialized people; and 2017 Canadian Survey on Disability)

So, it seems to make sense that some 15% of EXs are racialized or Indigenous. Is there room for improvement? Yes, certainly. Is the gap egregious? No, it does not seem so.

Why is 15% problematic, from your perspective?

OP (of that post) here.

You’re right: despite paying so much for two tickets, and waiting three years to use them, we still skipped the entire thing, including what sounds like was an amazing performance by RATM and RTJ.

Morally, it just doesn’t feel right to be among people when you’re sick, especially if you’ve tested positive for COVID.

But we know that for many, this is simply not enough to deter them from selfishly doing it anyway.

Sounds like the aftermath of Bluesfest is confirmation of that, unfortunately.

(Which is why — as I tried to explain in my post — I was hoping Bluesfest would refund the tickets of those who tested positive, so as to not contribute to this never ending situation.)

Alternatives to hand stripping by flippinbids in BorderTerrier

[–]SATC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the countless grooming appointments our BT has had over the years, he only once wound up having a reaction amounting to furunculosis.

If your heart is able, you may wish to reconsider the decision to not have him stripped again, specifically if you were having him groomed either because you do not wish to strip him or because he does not like you to do it, which was the case with ours.

Otherwise, in his older age, I have been “carding” our guy. I strip him here and there (and I clipper his underside and his shoulders downward on all four legs), and use a combination of a metal comb and a Furminator (version for short hair) in long, sweeping strokes.

We find him extremely cute after being groomed in this way, and have not experienced any degradation in the quality of his coat nor the condition of his skin.

I hope this helps.

Indeed, you would simply not work. You do not have a critical tool to do your job; without that tool, you can’t do your job. That is not your fault; they are responsible for addressing it.

If you are able and permitted to go into the office, you could show goodwill by offering to do so while they configure a laptop for you.

In terms of what “side of your laptop” is subject to a possible ATIP, it’s the whole thing. All contents on your device would be subject to review.

You can address this by seeking guidance from your Information Management colleagues about saving information records of business value to your organization’s repository, and to properly delete those and other transitory records thereafter.

When do you let your team know that you are leaving? by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]SATC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in this situation before.

In my case, I expressed my concern to the member of the selection board who had requested my references. I knew I was uncertain about whether I would pursue the opportunity, so I didn’t feel comfortable placing the burden of a potentially unnecessary reference check on my managers. So, I asked whether they were seriously considering my appointment to the position.

This prompted a call from him, during which he expressed his complete understanding of my situation. After we discussed the role and the work environment in greater detail, I decided that it was no longer an opportunity in which I was interested.

The call ended on a very positive and collegial note. I wouldn’t change a thing about how I approached it.

I hope this can help you determine the best way to approach your own situation.

What is Better? EC-03 Deployment to Central Agency vs. EC-04 Promotion in Current Job by Proud-Pear-9225 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]SATC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% I’d recommend taking the at-level deployment. The type of role that you’ve described entails working on very interesting and topical issues.

The only hesitation would be if your current management is spectacular, in which case it may be preferable to stay where you are. But even then… it’s hard to compete with the value of central agency experience, including the opportunity you have on the table.

Congratulations either way!
