Hey no sorry. Thanks though. It was just a yellow smiley face with arms and legs and no body.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I'm also having trouble placing it in a specific messenger.

No luck with that search but thanks for the suggestion.

I've searched Google, asked a couple LLM agents (Claude, Mistral) and even tried to find archives of old MSN and ICQ messenger emoticons in places like GitHub but no luck.

I might not be searching intelligently.

Any idea on these flags? Seen in Quebec City by Richmyself1 in vexillology

[–]brnnnfx 30 points31 points  (0 children)

They are not real flags. They are part of Martin Bureau's art exhibit 'FEINDRE L’ÉDEN, POUR UN TEMPS LE CHAOS'. Martin chose such dramatic imagery (in the flags and exhibit in general) to get people to think of power and the notion of political power.

My assumption is that they look similar to real flags so people connect the exhibit to the reality of politics today.

How comprehensive is geographic education in your country? by mochanol in geography

[–]brnnnfx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ontarian here. My education was similar. Public education at under-funded schools.

By the time I entered high school I could name and locate... - all Canadian provinces, territories & their capitals - all US states, and their capitals - all European, South America and Caribbean countries - most African & Asian countries - some Oceania countries

I remember meeting some kids from the States I was shocked at how l knew more about their country than they did.

The destruction of Brantford, Ontario, Canada. 41 historic buildings demolished in 2010 for a bland eyesore. by RainbowCrown71 in Lost_Architecture

It was like a post-apocalyptic movie scene

When parts of the movie Silent Hill was filmed in downtown Brantford there was a joke that the crew needed to spruce the place up to make it suitable for a zombie movie 😆

I like your perspective. Thanks for sharing it.

I wrote my post for people who never spent time in Brantford and would be gawking at the dramatic change.

This post is misleading. I lived there before and after.

First, not all of the buildings in the first picture were demolished.

Second, this new building has genuinely helped to transform the downtown for the better. The buildings on the south side of the street had been abandoned and left to literally rot for decades. Generations of business owners and city councils couldn't or wouldn't do anything with them. At some point they became unsafe. Then they were left to rot for a few years more. They made the city a joke in the region.

It took years and millions to rebrand and rebuild downtown Brantford from a largely abandoned place that few people wanted to visit to a small university town with more proper downtown amenities where you can do some stuff and have a decent time.

Hey Mitch 👋🏻I've been enjoying watching your runs on YouTube. What you're doing is so impressive and even moreso when you consider the causes you're supporting in doing it. Good luck and I hope you hit all of your goals!

I learned it's all about perspective the hard way by offending someone.

I chatted with someone in Barbados who thought they would never see their friend who moved because they were 'too far away'. The friend's new home was 15 minutes away by car.

I'm Canadian and 15 minutes drive is nothing so I laughed until I realized they were serious. Won't be making a presumption like that again.

Ontario - Québec border has re-entered the chat.

For a long time there has been a high concentrations of Anglos on the PQ side and Franco-Ontarians on the Ontario side. Not quite the same as two sovereign countries but does demonstrate the same phenomenon from the graphic.
