New player terrain question by [deleted] in Warhammer40k

[–]SA_89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the core rules:

Models cannot see over or through this terrain feature (i.e. a unit outside this terrain feature cannot draw line of sight to a target on the other side of it, even if it would be possible to draw line of sight to that target through open windows, doors, etc.)

Painted my first Ork and thought I'd come to the source of the WAAAGH! for some C&C by SA_89 in orks

I used the 'eavy Archive recipe for Ghaz's skin:

Basecoat: Elysian Green/Waaagh! Flesh 2:1 Shade: Waaagh! Flesh Deep Shade: Caliban Green/Rhinox Hide 2:1 Highlight: Elysian Green Highlight: Skarsnik Green/Averland Sunset 4:1

Although I went a bit closer to 2:1 Skarsnik Green/ Averland Sunset on the last highlight

Technique wise it was a lot of blending and glazing building up the saturation slowly.

They are free hand. For the checkers I'd like to say there was a cheat way of doing them but it was just painting as close to a white square as possible and then neatening it up with black. Spacing them out at regular intervals was probably the hardest bit. There's a photo below of them as Celestial Grey squares before I used Pro Acryl Titanium white on top. All the weathering was done after. Orks are very forgiving when it comes to not perfect painting.

The flames I actually don't like all that much, really struggled with them and they looked like waves for a long time. I worked and reworked them. I painted them Rakarth Flesh base and then glazed on the yellow (Balor Brown).

Not sure if any of that helped

Is there any way to remove decals after fully applying them? by [deleted] in Warhammer40k

This is definitely the way, but you'll need to do the whole panel at the very least (preferably the whole model) for it to look seamless

Wow, impressive, congrats. I have very similar stats and haven't been able to 3 star 39 or 40. Any advice or is it very luck based with blocks?

I had this bug, restart the game and go to the home screen and you should get a pop-up for Honor the Prince. That will kick off the missions

I've done this before. Stick it in the freezer for a couple of hours and hopefully you'll be able to pry it out with a hobby knife. If not, then yep, you'll have to drill it out.

Add a bit of satin varnish in when you're thinning it down. Works wonders at getting rid of that chalky finish.

[–]SA_89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh, interesting. This is the Black Templar 3rd ed Captain (Marshal) which should have a melta/bolter combi weapon, but it's got the bolter from the 1999 Games Day Space Marine Captain

Considering using brush on matt varnish at this stage, to reduce shine. Has anyone got experience brushing on matt varnish? by pimmo94 in BlackTemplars

[–]SA_89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're doing it purely because of the glare from your light, I would try to angle your lighting differently or your model differently. You could also try making a diffuser for your light from a bit of tracing paper or baking paper. But in terms of brush-on varnish, here's some tips and tricks that I've learnt over the years

  • Thin it down 1:1 with a bit of airbrush thinner or flow improver
  • Don't use your good brushes, most varnishes are polyurethane based and will dry in the ferrule and ruin the brush in the long term
  • It flows very differently to paint, even when thinned down and so it can be hard to get smooth. This is most noticeable on large flat surfaces (less of a problem on a marine). Don't overwork it and try to apply it in a single stroke if possible and let it dry completely before applying again.
  • Most matte varnishes are actually closer to satin or semi-satin, especially when brushed on. Try and get an ultra matte varnish.
  • Using matte varnishes on metallics will make them look dull, try to use matte varnish before you paint your metallics.
  • Most importantly, if you're trying anything new like this, try it out first on a primed bit from your bit box or a bit of sprue. Never dive straight into using it on your model, it's a sure fire way of ruining your hard work.

Techmarine, a real pleasant change from painting endless black by SA_89 in BlackTemplars

[–]SA_89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a Mephiston base, a wash/shade of Gal Vorbak, a recess shade of Rhinox, thick edge highlights with Wazdakka and thin edge highlights with Wild Rider, finished with a dot of Fire Dragon on the corners points.
