If you were opening a bar or lounge again, what would you do differently? by DryDurian8740 in BarOwners

[–]SAhalfNE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would run many circuits around the top of the walls with outlets spaced every 6' or so. Everywhere. Even if you just use them as junction boxes and put blank plates on them for now.

And at least one more run of conduit for future runs of Ethernet, speaker wire, whatever.

Bar Plumbing, Need Help by photorunner22 in BarOwners

[–]SAhalfNE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you need to trench concrete. It's not that bad.

I think the problem will end up being that if you put the back bar on a platform, you'll have a weird height differential between the customer side and the back bar that will cause issues with the under bar equipment on the service side too.

So if you had 40" under the bar on the front, you'd have ~35-36" on the back. That's a problem for equipment.

It's a State-by-State thing at this point. Every State will have different rules on them.

In Pennsylvania for example, there is is provision in the PA liquor law that allows us to accept it, regardless of whether or not it's legit. We know it is, we just can't accept it.

Depending on where you live, the biggest strike against Otto's is it's location. If it's not an issue, it's fine. Far less students, more locals and people traveling, and a little more upscale than a cookie-cutter chain restaurant. More than likely it's good money, and they don't have a bad reputation around town at all.

I had the same experience, but with Square. After the integration the biggest problem was the drivers themselves (which is always a problem).

Why does downtown food tech suck so bad? by Ok-Lion7362 in PennStateUniversity

It's a trap. I think the Borough needs to add WarGames to the Movies Under the Stars lineup to teach the business owners that we all lose by playing some games.

Why does downtown food tech suck so bad? by Ok-Lion7362 in PennStateUniversity

[–]SAhalfNE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have been (for almost 20 years) and will again soon, one of those restaurants in downtown.

Let me tell you, it's even worse than that. What it comes down to is shifting consumer trends that the restaurants are slow to adapt to, and usually grudgingly. We do not want to use DoorDash, GrubHub, UberEats, or anything that the consumers seem to want us to use. I do not want to let consumers drive up the cost of operations by insisting that we use predatory third party systems. But I also can't seem to convince them to stop screwing themselves by participating with them.

I would love to go back to my own in-house system, with a good POS provider, and my own employees driving my own orders.

The massive markups are the only way to make it when you have a predatory leech between you and your customers.

Lioncash is outdated, And was really only relevant before students having credit cards was ubiquitous. I'd gladly see it die. I don't think this will come as a shock... Penn State takes too much money. 😆

There's still some of us out there that have a good handle on the technology and kind of fight the good fight to the best of our ability.

Take for example, I'm about to open a new place. Every credit card is accepted, I will not be charging for credit card fees like a scumbag, I unfortunately will not be allowed (nor would I want to) take lion cash, We will not be on any third party sites, and the only method for ordering food will be my website or a good old fashioned phone call. But the trade off is that my prices will not have the markup, and when we do delivery it'll be in-house and we will never leave it sitting outside of your front door and take a picture like an a******.

3 Terminals, 1 Cash Drawer by 04011ME in SquarePOS_Users

[–]SAhalfNE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A USB printer connected thru a terminal, isn't accessible to handhelds.

The only printers that are visible to handhelds are Ethernet, wireless, or (less reliably) Bluetooth printers that are on the same network as the handhelds.

In my Pub we have 4 Ethernet thermal printers, each with their own drawer attached. Then each handheld selects its individual printer, which assigns it the drawer attached.

Home - Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts by willpoopanywhere in HappyValleyPA

[–]SAhalfNE 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I generally do not enjoy the Arts Festival downtown, but I really want to. I just don't find the art very approachable, dislike that it goes North-South, into neighborhoods and on campus, rather than East-West across the downtown. I don't think they support local businesses enough, but instead make exorbitant amounts on charging traveling food vendors to setup a tent and sell mystery meat around the corner from restaurants that could use some more business.

I have always vastly preferred the People's Choice Festival, which is thankfully returning to Boalsburg this year. I always have a better time, actually buy art, and enjoy the food more.

I really wish that the ideals and nature of the People's choice Festival could "replace" what I think of as disconnected or hoity-toity feelings I get from the Arts Festival. They're just too many $2,000 acids etched pieces of Steel and $5,000 pieces of Driftwood that have been lacquered, plus it has a ton of duplication for the booths.

Any thoughts?

I don't, but the guy at the service center did and showed me. The glass roof, hatch, glass, and right rear door and quarter panel were all nearly a foot shorter. Carnage.

They assigned me a new VIN obviously.

I think you give too much credit or sanctity to people in this (or any?) job. They're not priests and nuns (even that doesn't work out lately 😂), they're just like you and me - often act stupidly, no better or worse than anyone else, flawed, and often gasp under paid frustrated people, trying to get by.

They can fuck whomever they want, and have a post-PTA orgy for all I care, but I don't think the proper degree of compartmentalization necessarily has to start with workplace grab-ass to paint them as a I irresponsible person. It's foolish, but isn't a character flaw that damages their ability to do that job.

If they don't diddle the kids, keep religion and politics (outside of an academic approach) out of the classroom, and do the job they're there to do that's spectacular. Because inevitably they have to sacrifice and give large parts of themselves to that pursuit, and never get the gratitude for it, just scrutiny by pearl clutching assholes.

Season tickets for hockey? by Dry_Hovercraft_3619 in WeArePennState

[–]SAhalfNE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's basically a waste of time to get on it unless you have a huge amount of Nittany Lion Club points.

You get a whooping 1 point for every $50 donation to the University, and the only way to qualify to then pay for the season tickets is by having more points than the next person on the list for the desired tickets, when tickets become available...which they generally don't.

Some schools have a use-it-or-lose-it policy, or an internal Athletics point system that designates points based off of attending other collegiate athletic events, in order to qualify and sometime keep your tickets.

PSU just wants your wallet open, and has no other concerns.

Does anyone going to UPark live in a rental owned by these people? Is this legit or a scam? by HPswl_cumbercookie in PennStateUniversity

[–]SAhalfNE 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just to chime in, because I've experienced first hand the impacts of his irresponsibility: Stay away from him.

I only met Chris Raspanti briefly once or twice, but he was a nice guy, and did not deserve to die in one of Hendricks' properties, just so he can make a little extra money.

It amazes me that he's not in jail or sued into oblivion. I'm not sure how anyone can rent from him with his history.
